Seeing as new sections have been added, put me in for OpenGL, DirectX, Winapi and MySQL as well as HTML/CSS (didn't notice that was a distinct category). Thanks.

I remember him posting a emotion-dripping thread about how she is moving elsewhere with her family. It was deleted later on on request (the reaction probably wasn't quite what he expected ). So I guess that's a no.
Maybe he got a new one.

On a further note, this thread is somewhat spammy.

Posted on 04-29-06 01:39 PM, in ROM hackers mass interview Link
I'm blackhole89, 16 years old, the 89 in my nickname has nothing to do with my birthyear (though that would be '89 too). I started ROM hacking about 2002 or 2003 and got into the assembly aspects of it right away because it seemed the more attractive part to me. I think I made myself a name for starting more or less spectacular projects and delaying their release ad infinitum because I lack time to complete them or just am unable to reach the point at which I'd call it at a releasable state. (Most unreleased tools of mine, in fact, work more or less well.)

1.What draws you to the ROM hacking community?
My technical interest, elitism and the fact it is one of the few somewhat intellectual ones. Also, the people are nice.

2. Do you think playing/modifying hacked ROMs should be more user friendly?
Yes/No. Yes for fundamental, linear work like editing levels. No for tools that make actual indepth hacking a one-click process.

3.What are the advantages/disadvantages of ROM hacking vs. ripped sprites with code written from scratch?
You don't have to mess with the basic, often resultless first steps of making a new game run. There's more of an intellectual challenge to find your way into others' code which was often even written to be hard to understand.

4. Do you think there are limits to what people should be allowed to do with their games?
No.

5.What do you think about the future of the ROM hacking community?
It will eventually decrease in size and melt down to a small "hard core" of insiders and people to whom it really means something, rather than just following a trend or showing off. But it probably won't entirely perish within my lifetime.

- The title is about as informative as pancakes.
- The thread itself contains a stupid question. But I think this has already been pointed out.
- I don't see how this could possibly develop into a good thread.

Conclusion: This better be closed right now.

Enter me for ASM questions if possible. Though my activity at ROM hacking has dropped to a minimum lately, I still think I can answer a good deal of questions.

Hmm... next time you have a hack-related question, try
(a) posting it in the corresponding forum (SMW Hacking)
(b) PMing the author about it, seeing as he still is on the board.

As the issue seems to have been cleared out anyway, I'll tick Close before submitting this.

We actually have a perfect global pre-3rd Reich situation right there.

Economical stagnation.
Diffuse "threats" that are quickly blown up by politicians ("International Terrorism" nowadays, "The Jews and Communists" back then).
People being not content with the results of democracy.
A call for "return to old values".
People willing to trade social and technological progress for safety.

Most arguments that were brought up by the Nazis when they cut press freedom, like governments are attempting to cut internet information exchange freedom nowadays, interestingly are very similar to those of today.
Also, lesser countries with liberal internet policies won't make up much against the fact that the largest countries all have released far-going internet supervision laws to "fight terrorism". Right now, a ban on encryption for VoIP is in discussion in Germany, for instance, after they passed a law that forces VoIP providers to redirect all conversations over their relays and keep them stored for 6 months or something to make them available to police and anti-terror agencies.

The situation is more critical than one might think. Only it will be too late when the mass of the people recognizes there were no terrorists in their AIM buddylist.

(Likely the persons asking things like "how do i get the yellow coins in random hack #456356" won't read this thread anyway, but in these cases, there will at least be something to refer to when closing the thread.)

If you have a question relating to a present hack, there is generally the option of asking the author via PM or e-mail, given he is on this board (and that is mostly the case). If this option, for whatever reason, does NOT exist or the author refuses to give you hints, you should either
(a) cope with it / try to figure yourself as the author intends you to
or (b) post the question in here.

Posting a new thread about your issue is NOT an option.

I was initially thinking of making this a sticky in ROM hacking, making it refer to all hacks, but thought it'd be better to try in here first. A thread like this in ROM hacking would only guarantee the ones who intend to post their threads in SMW hacking would not pay attention to it. In case this works well, there still is the option of moving this thread to ROM hacking or creating a similar one there.

*closes in reference of http://board.acmlm.org/thread.php?id=5124*

On a little side note, I do not blame the author of this thread for anything as the thread was posted before the presence of the sticky.
Just thought this would be a more or less good way of signalizing what kind of question it refers to, and posting such a sticky while leaving a thread of the kind it tells not to post open would seem ridiculous.

I wrote my first program when I was 3 years old. It was in QBASIC. (And no, that's not a joke.)

I started hacking (as in, real hacking, not using editors) at the age of 11 at the file format of a certain freeware, but not open source DOS game.

I once interviewed Otto Schily, Germany's minister of interior (that's about the effectively second highest political rank after the chancellor) back when I ran a school newspaper with classmates. I was 12 years old back then.

My coke drinking record stands at something above 10 litres a day.

According to my results in the German Maths Olympiad, I am amongst the 150 best mathematicians of my age, or rather grade, in Germany.

I once found an exploit in Acmlmboard back in the first or second incarnation and used it to make myself admin. Sadly, Xkeeper got the public "credit" for it because I told him on IRC and he was more known for doing things like that.
When Acmlm got on IRC, I traded information about the exploit and how to fix it for titleoption=1 (I was non-staff back then).

By word count, my post is the longest in this thread so far. That means I am totally awesome.

Enough bragging for a day?

Typical example of how one should not proceed when posting about an issue one has.

(1) The thread title was non-informative, if not deviative.
(2) Rather than asking any particular question, you just made a vague statement about what you want to do. This could either be (mis-, or I hope so)interpreted as a master-and-slave scenario ("I want more food. Now."), or suggest you think everybody has a particular interest in your ambitions. Only there's dozens of others with the same plans... they just didn't post about it as they had nothing to show.
The overall effect could be compared to me posting a thread with the topic "Mushrooms" and the contents "I am going to eat now." in General Chat. This might go through in LT, but I think you recognize the general absurdity to it.
(3) You gave no description of any particular problem you had.

If that sounded harsh of me, no offense... I just don't know how to explain it otherwise, and there were a lot of threads like this one in the history of the board already without anybody really doing anything against it.

Regards,
-- blackhole89.
