Jade Empire WAS disappointing!
However, Vagrant Story and Valkyrie Profile were absolutely <3tacular. In fact, Vagrant Story rules all sorts of things. |

If a game looks really muddy and its graphics become a hindrance. Then yeah. I'm not going to play it. I said it.
That said, graphics are far from the first thing I look at. |

Have you ever considered a computer? They do what you're asking for and given that you don't seem to listen you'd get along well with a buggy copy of ME

Video game quality isn't declining.
A combination of CHANGING styles, INCREASING BUDGETS, AND DIFFERENT TECHNOLOGIES are making it so that video games AREN'T what they were like 10 years ago. The INDUSTRY is different at so many levels and people like us aren't the necessary target audience anymore. I love Metal Slug and Guilty Gear and Jojo's Bizarre Adventure as much as the next person. But shrill, baseless, and overly subjective opinions treated as fact help no one. Video game quality hasn't declined. Video game production has changed. There are still lots of old styled games. We play them, us few, but the general public doesn't want to. The games are different. Not bad. It is like saying that movies have gotten worse on the whole since the 1940-1960 (which is my personal heyday of movie making). The styles have changed, and so too have the production processes. Many blockbuster movies really suck because they're targetted at general public audience (in the case of this board, most of you who won't sit around and watch art films and neo noir). That is my opinion. Movies haven't gotten worse. They've changed Although S&TSR is marked as my next Wii acquisition. It just seems to horrorshow to pass up. However, I will wait a bit to pass full judgement. I just realy want to see a Nintendo or Sega produced RTS that really takes the full promise of the Wii to the till. |

I'm working on my writing again. I'm 10 pages into a short story. I've also started on my first full length manuscript. The short story should be done soon and I'll be tossing it to a lit. mag. along with some of my soft-sci-fi shit that I've finished up. I recently burned my first attempt at a full length novel, I got about 120 pages into it, but really hated the direction I took and would rather just forget the whole endeavour.
Also, school assignments 1. 25 page report on SALTI 2. 10 page essay on pro-war sentiments in intellectual circles prior to the Great War 3. A 15 page follow up on the report to SALTI 4. A 20 page paper on any post 1930 topic. |

Because sniping all of a sudden becomes more difficult if people are using cover like you usually do in real life, rather than a rudimentary ability to duck. So, if you REALLY want to play as a sniper, go ahead. But it isn't going to be easy streets like most games.
The thrill of the hunt is brought on by survival in this game. Your enemies, you don't know their skill level and if you know what you're doing it can scare the shite out of you. You just cover, run, gun, and try to figure out how to kill your enemy. But, if you go on the hunt a new realm of strategy opens up. The other guy is thinking to do what you'd do if you weren't hunting. Cover, run, and gun. You have to find a way to survive. And kill him. He'd like to kill you, but he'd rather wait. Also, chainsaws are easy to stop. You stay back. And shoot people. Usually when you have the chainsaw out, you're hunting. If you're not hunting, or counter-hunting, then you stay back with more powerful ranged weaponary and knock the fucker down. He doesn't have range. |

Uniracers. I had it when I was a kid. Then I couldn't find it for a while. And I always wanted to play "that rocking game", but when I described it no one could remember it. And then one day I found the ROM. And I was happy again.

I'm really surprised that this isn't a field that has really opened up too much. Film and literature, as viable industrial and artistic aspects of culture as video games, both are full of theorists and actually working genre systems that transcend basic play models (witness auterism). I was wondering why video games, and gamers for that matter, haven't been able to spawn a field that is so important to forwarding creativity within a genre?
Ultimately many video games are as open to interpretation, due to complex musical scores, plot lines and play devices, as many films. I personally think that by opening video games to being more open to indepth analysis, like films, that go beyond basic and primative critiques (seriously, many reviews of video games that I happen to browse read like a gorilla grunting). Within the film industry there are major insider magazines that are open to those outside of the film industry, I've yet to see one for video games. Likewise, let me just say that EGM (sadly, being the only really readable magazine that is affordable) has some pretty bullshit analysis. See this shitty analysis done on 1up about differences in gaming. Such things would become more commonplace, but would require a better amount of research, depth, writing skill, and other factors. Much like the way that film and literature has evolved. By creating a field that would be populated by people who make a living out of video game analysis at the artistic level it could potentially widen niche and indy market viability. Imagine games that are just more stylish than what we're used to, or games that focus on nothing but innovative gameplay. Of course, a mainstream will still exist, but many producers will actually be inticed by the artistic aspects of video game production to change their methods to cater a little bit more to this should-be-important sector of the audience. Plus, it would mean that guys like Itagaki would have a bit more prominence, but many of them would be noticeably less dickish than he. edit:: my personal theory is that the 2d-3d transition in certain genres simply can't be done easily and that series that have been in 2d for a long time are going to have a harder transition. Well, it's not a theory, really. But you can expand it into a theory. (edited by Ziff on 01-23-07 06:43 PM) |

I see it as eventually breaking out as its own program, but currently it would have to be confined to maybe a film studies program. I'd really like to see some colleges offer maybe just a single course in this as a suplement. Gamers are coming of age, and ultimately many of us are taking a different look at the hobby, the industry, and the culture now that we are older. Some people are taking to different sides of it, some are forgetting all about it.
One thing that I DID like was the recent Itagaki interview on 1up. Here was a decent article. Not because of a good interview, Mielke is a dolt, but because of a developer who is really seeing video games and the experience therein as something more. He alludes to a design philosophy, but doesn't really explain and expand on that point enough. Plus, I think students would learn about this being serious when they realize that listening means marks. edit:: just found the wikipedia article on ludology or game studies. Not particularly indepth, but a start. Likewise I found an interesting blog about well, ludology itself . These are starting points, but the humanities side of video games have been massively neglected and their social conscience aspect, which is so strong in film, is nearly non-existant. For all those interested, I started a blog (boo!) to begin using as a platform. I'm getting used to this blogspot crap. I'm hoping to get some other people perhaps posting as time goes on.
