Well given that Catholicism is Christianity and vice versa its not really a big switch in religions. Its not even really a conversion.

But, MoN, you're overlooking the interdenominational Pentecostal and Charismatic movements that pretty much have a good hold on Christianity in the US. So, it doesn't matter what denomination he was. A lot of Christians just move between congregations for a variety of reasons, ranging from theological, social, political, or otherwise.

And I don't see why you reach the conclusion that born again Protestantism is the saving grace of graceful salvation. The logical extension of the argument is actually that Catholicism, due to the facts of absolution of sin and various other conditions found within the laws behind the Church's ideological drive, would be the same way to heaven. I mean, at least the Catholic faith, over and above the protestant denominations that seem to spread like wildfire these days, accepts that there are multiple paths to God, although the one true path in the end of it all is the Catholic Church. It just becomes a bit easier to accept it all when you're facing up to the almighty after you've kicked the bucket if you've lived the life of accepting the fact that the Papacy and all the aspects of the Church were the true way. I suppose though that the historical anti-Catholic sentiment that permeates Puritanical rooted American culture seeps into the conceptualization of Catholicism as its own religion apart the whole world of Christianity. I mean, look at Riku's post "I'm with the Christian church, and I've wondered how anyone can switch religions and your family be alright with that. I mean, if I switched religions, my grandma would try to set me on fire." Aside from the hilarious fact that conversion to Catholicism in the early days of the faith meant being burned at the stake by the presumed matriarch of your good Roman family...

Mind you, the whole Christianity v Catholicism debate has me lolling unbelievably hard.

Although on an incidental note I'm on my way out of this whole Catholic deal. Certain faiths just aren't for certain people.

There are already adequate places in which you can do these things. Femine's Corner has been utilized to a great degree for this. Modern Art can handleit. Additionally, Officer's Club and the WA/D forum can attrition out some of the damage. The whole thing won't be utilized enough to warrant constant supervision by a dedicated mod of any sort. It would just be easier for people to slot out their work as they feel fit amongst what we have here.

I thus vote no.

One of the major issues with Russia is the breakdown of order in the criminal world. This whole issue makes it harder for us in the West (and anywhere, really) to monitory and assess the actions of the black worlds that have sprung up in the post-soviet sphere. Russia isn't a state only of Russians. Due to the multi-ethnic nature of the Russian Federation it makes killings of people opposed to the government's programs very difficult to sort out. You may criticize the government for one policy or its dealing here, but if you don't cover the story the way someone likes it you may run into an issue with an ethnic mafia - Ukrainians, Armenians, Georgians, Russians, whatever there is - and get killed. The whole Anna Politkovskaya issue had a prelude in the street of Kyiv when a young journalist was beaten to death by ex-government thugs under the hire of Kuchma. The difference is that she attacked a whole list of issues and may have come foul of any number of groups. Litvenenko though was a loon who claimed that Romano Prodi was a KGB man that sheltered the would-be assassains of Karol Wotoya, amongst other things. His murder though is tragically bizarre in how it all has gone.

"Putin is a figurehead politician carried by a party that holds far more old Soviet-time elites than would be healthy for it, certain parts of the mafia and a select lobby of government-friendly industries. Both could be removed at ease and in no time if they lost the support of their hardly to be called democratic backup system. "

I don't think it would be possible to do anything of that sort. As said earlier, the dingier facts of Russian governance aren't known to the world outside the "family" in the Kremlin. A party purge would be far too destabilising. To remove the old politburo boys would be to sacrifice those with experience. To kill off the industry lobby would be to further enfuriate the reeling oligarchs and the slowly growing noveau riche novii russkii, hardly an option available to Putin at this point. The mafia, though, could be done with painstakingly meticulous means. The issue of the Russian mob, in terms of the international order, are inseperable from every day life in the post-soviet sphere. The black markets that perestroika meant to kill were fuelled by the new globe and privatization. To cut out the mob in anyway would not be easy. It is simply not possible until the Russian state can be assertive towards internal economic woes that allow for the under world to operate so effectively.

Ummm, got some statistics on that? Last I checked canings were popular all across South East Asia. Many of those countries are host to a naughty bunch of young rapscallions.

Well, Putin is kind of building on the shoulders of Yeltsin and Gorbachev who were the ones that really prevented civil war. He has just managed to raise Russia's foreign profile.

Or...you know, psychological trauma creates broken individuals that are more apt to commit crimes again. I mean, in the Middle East and the FP of Pakistan crime rates aren't particularly low despite having your hands cut off for stealing bread (although that characterization is a little out dated). Criminal rehabilitation is designed to do the best to reintegrate the people back into society so that they can contribute. Making people psychotics isn't the best way to go around that.

Really, I just want to see some studies or stats on why you're spewing this.

So, ignoring the fact that the entire thread has basically proven you wrong...where is your proof of this. Statistics, hell, even officially given anecdotal evidence?

I think that, Hiryuu, you suffer from the distortion of nostaliga. We only remember those fucking awesome core games that stand out. We only remember the really, really, really, really bad games. Right now we're bombarded by games on an unforeseen scale. That doesn't change the fact that for every good game 7 god awful pieces of shitware are produced by the giant industry anus. It happened with Atari. It happened with Genesis and SNES. It happens today. It will happen when video games are controlled by twitches in your tongue. (HEY NINTENDO BRIDGE THE GAP. MY TONGUE DOESN'T PLAY THE GAME. CHANGE IT)

I'm standing by my stance. Given that I can identify shitty games for those systems like no tomorrow (Y HALO THERE GROWTH OF AN INDUSTRY. MY 1st YEAR ECONOMICS CLASS TAUGHT ME ALL ABOUT YOU). Offer me some proof other than a nerdy child's anecdotal evidence.

Sonic is now a small, insignificant corner of the market. Alienating its current fans (mostly people like you (tm) and children) isn't going to hurt business in any meaningful way

The morbid fascination of watching someone on Youtube get screamed at before being hung is quite different than actually watching a human being torn to shreds by a barbed whip, screaming in agony, and staring right into your eyes while you're watching it happen.

Ummm, apophis, the papal infallibility doesn't mean the pope is right on EVERYTHING. That's a common misconception.

Also, birth control and abortion are relative matters within the Church. Abortion is a harder line stance, which is acceptable, even if I don't agree. But, birth control is contentious and highly debated issue. It is accepted with a wink in a nudge amongst many within the Church.

Or just take the RCIA which is the basic initiation. And then you can get into theology. Make sure you understand the basics before jumping into the deep end of the confusion pool.

It's not the same.

Neo-liberal relates to the old movement of liberals in the mid part of the 19th century. Laissez-faire, relaxed social controls, no tariffs, smaller governance. There were a lot of liberal camps, but that is the modern neo-liberal movement. It is economic. In the US liberalism is defined as more or less a bunch of social issues - like gay rights - and then people peg on derogatory economic concepts, like socialism. So, if you're a person that is coined a liberal in the US, you might as well, for the most part, be coined a socialist or a leftist. Remembering of course that any "moderate" democrats would be centre-right in any other country.

Neo-conservatives relate primarily to an adventurous foreign policy that bolsters Americans interests in an idealistic sphere.

Reading usually helps.

That is exactly why Aussies and Canucks don't care for the monarchy. We don't want it to have power, but it is the philosophical implications of having "god empowered" monarchs hanging over our heads in a ceremonial position to whom we are direct "subjects"

Their legitimate power is entertaining the English who read tabloids.
