No, its unwinnable because of the choices made immediately after the invasion and the lack of foresight with the idea of holding down a country for a short period of time with a Lean Mean Cyborg Army. Rumsfeld fucked it up.

America's public did nothing to lose the war.

"House cats and tigers, my friend. How many countries around the world were influenced by Chinese ideology during the cold war? Now compare that with the number influenced by USSR and US ideologies."

I don't know why, but an interesting quote came to mind.

"Dictators ride to and fro upon tigers which they dare not dismount"
-Winston Churchill

The extreme right in France isn't a particularly good example of the EU nationalism issues.

2007 is going to be brutal for me.

But due to my scrapping of plans for a study trip to Moscow I'm currently getting a work visa. Which country? I don't know, but the city I'll probably be staying in is called Melbourne.

Well, he isn't a martyr. Not even the Shia will make him that. However, the prevailing idea that his execution was a Shiite manouver and the revelations of people yelling at him on the gallow's table will only continue to exacerbate conditions on that sectarian front. This move is one of unbelievable ineptitude.

Well, given the political climate wherein the rule of law is not yet established it would be best to assert a policy of non-exacerbation instead of instantly sinking to do a poorly driven execution to smooth over relations with Kurds and Shia at the expense of a mighty pissed off Sunni minority. It also risks other political implications across the rest of the Sunni world. In sectarianist Iraq Saddam was hated. But he was a Sunni.

Because you're bringing up the issue of nationalism. The radical right in France has a decent level of power under Le Pen. But we're looking ath the EUROPEAN UNION. A massive set of states that have their own loopy-loo problems. Slovakia's xenophobic nationalist crazies are left wingers. In Britain the BNP is whatever the fuck it is. Assessing radicalism as the sole blocker of ratification of documents within the EU is absolutely stupid.

The EU isn't going to fail due to an existentialist fear of a loss of culture. The sheer amount of numbers and facts are in favour of the EU becoming a major power broker across the world.

For what its worth the Democrats and the Republicans wold be like coalitions in other states. They're both a bunch of caucuses that sit around and argue amongst themselves. Although under Rove the moderate branch of the Republican party doesn't really hold seats or much sway. Even the "liberal" branches are engulfed within neocon ideology - this includes the Log Cabin Republicans.

Likewise, the Democrats are a broad based group. I mean, Hillary is hardly a "leftist" by any means in many countries. Even within the US bounds. Plus, there is a large contingent of conservative democrats.

US politics, are to say the least, quite interesting. I often have to sit up late at night and engulf myself in Roll Call and the Hill and just get caught up

Have fun. When are you doing the RCIA? Also, are you sticking with mainline Catholicism or are you going to the Charismatic strain? There is a lot about the faith that people coming in don't know about that could scare them. Heck, even if you grow up your whole life as a Catholic you'll always be confronted with something new every once in a while.

It makes perfect political sense, actually This is what happens when larger power groups take over. Those that don't agree fully get slotted into the one that is most similar to them. A US socialist party during the Reagen administration actually fed a lot of intellectuals to the Republicans It helped breed the neocon movement. I wish US politics were as black and white as they seem on the surface.

4 more hours East Coast.

Well, needless to say I'm going to the Australian consulate next week to talk about the process of getting a work visa. I've never really looked into this before, so it should be fun.

Yeah, there is that too.

Even though I'm on my way out, I'll still have a certain love for Catholicism. It can be a delightfully wacky religion. It has some very eccentric bits. Make sure your priest is a Jesuit and bug him about hagiography. Them stories always got me through the days a lot. St. Odo of Cluny or St. Ammon of Egypt. Great fun.

Yeah, turning something metaphorical into something literal sometimes isn't the smartest thing to do.

On the topic the NYTimes had some interesting insight into the issue here http://www.nytimes.com/2007/01/01/world/middleeast/01sunnis.html?_r=1&oref=slogin

The sanctions, legal challenges, training, employment of torturers, equipment, legislation, and other requirements to make your public torture a reality are just too much. Excusing the absolute immoral and inexcusable lack of justification behind the entire idea, yeah. Costs totally outweigh the benefits. The US system is pretty draconian and inefficient by Western standards anyhow.
