Actually, if you put in a sixth for monster A, the game would very likely ignore it as a "sixth" evolution, and use it as the first possible evolution for monster B instead.

The line about "evolving at an unreachable level" is a weird one, any evolution slot for any monster could be set to an unreachable level. Unreachable target monsters even! Imagine a Pikachu that evolves to Deoxys at level 151. Okay, now imagine a Pikachu that evolves to ????? at level 255. Pure weirdness.

He's been recolored, badly scaled and no standard palettes fit!
