I don't smoke and never will. I find it a disgusting habit that only costs money and annoys nearby non-smokers.

No ROM has graphics data right on the start. The blaring static you see is code and non-graphics data being misunderstood as graphics. That's because, aside from certain flavors of NES roms, there's no real distinction between the three data types.

If you don't grok that, you shouldn't be trying to graphics-hack.

The idiot's right. That looks too good to be called a doodle. I'd almost ask for more.

It's a technical limitation. The distinction can only be made if the image editor had a... map of sorts that says where the graphics are. But no editor programmer is insane enough to write half an emulator to trace out that map!

And -that- sucks.

NES roms can have two kinds of chips: Program and Character rom. Those with this distinction can often be loaded into, say, TLP and it'll show and edit only the CHRROM banks. It doesn't always work. Probably involves the game's use of specific mapper chips.

Tile Molester can handle 8BPP and higher. For just viewing, google for SV. It can't edit, but then, you did say "view".

Okay... you have just proven that you should not be trying to graphics-hack. Want me to explain why?

There's still the whole palette misunderstanding...

He's right though. I remember being told on MSN aeons ago that the battle code uses a whole lot of jumps instead of a simple table.

...Speaking of mappings, I've been stomping around Sonic 2 a bit myself, with a disassembly and SonEd2. Got any info or links regarding those... mappings? I have a folder full of them.

Okay. In the ROM, there's a big-ass list of names. Each entry has a fixed length:

SLUGMA [terminator byte] [filler bytes] MAGCARGO [terminator] [filler] ...

What I think PokéTronic did is:

DRAGMA [filler] MAGCARGO [terminator] [filler] ...

No terminator for Dragma.
So the game reads it -literally- as "DRAGMA MAGCARGO", ending at Magcargo's terminator.
