It was a shame Riquelme wasn't there for the penalty shootout, what with his ability to convert all the important penalties he shoots at Jens Lehmann.

It was fun to see, though, how Argentina's goalie was injured, but still able to keep trying to play. He was standing up, everything was close-to-ok. Then, 10 minutes later, when he realized he had to be subbed since the inury was worse than he thought, all of a sudden he has lost the ability to stand up, to walk, and he is in a world of pain. He needs a stretcher now! Pathetic attempt at time-wasting, it really annoyed me.

Quote Hernan Crespo: "We did not like that they were jumping up and down during the penalty kicks. There was a lot of tension."
Great going, Argentina! The perfect excuse to start a riot after the match. Really showing yourselves as good losers there. Shameful, really.

Oh please, it was a penalty shootout, expecting people to stand still is silly. There is no excuse for what the Argentinians did, and I hope FIFA cracks down on them harshly.

I'm thinking he didn't really step down, as much as he knew that McClaren would select a new captain once he became head coach. I'm predicting quite a few changes in the team. McClaren will pretty much have to adopt a more attacking style of play to show skeptics that he is something else than Eriksson. Certain players (*cough*Hargreaves*cough*) will see a lot less playing time, and I also predicted that McClaren would choose a new England captain, something he has been forced to do now.

Edit: So, with van Nistelrooij already hating Cristiano Ronaldo, and Rooney now stating that he's never playing with Ronaldo again, who's willing to bet that Man Utd will be one Portugese player short next year?

Hargreaves was great against Portugal, yes, but he's not at all popular among English fans (since he's a Canadian playing in Germany, he ain't really English enough for them). Eriksson has played Hargreaves a lot, and I'm guessing McClaren will boot him out to try to distance himself from Eriksson.

I read the news a while ago, and, well, I think you can guess what the Norwegian media focused on. If Greece doesn't get around to changing their rules, all we have to do to qualify for the Euros is placce second in a group consisting of Turkey, Bosnia, Hungary, Moldova, and Malta. Something which shouldn't be too hard.

The refing in italy vs. Germany was horrible. Some of the worst tackles were not carded (such as when Ballack was fouled, the ref. gave Germany advantage of the ball and Podolski got to a big chance. Judging by some of the cards he had given earlier in the match, he should definitely have given a yellow card for the tackle on Ballack there). Then, in the end, the ref. just stopped giving fouls at all. I remember the commentators at Norwegian TV going like this "...and that's a free kick to Italy... No? Why? (the Germans get posession of the ball and take it into Italy's half, an Italian tackles) ...and there's a free kick to Germany... NO? Not this either? (Italy counter-attacks, gets tackled) ...now that's got to be a... Nope, appearantly the ref feels there's not going to be any more fouls in this match"...

The worst thing, though, was that Germany should have had a penalty, even though they shouldn't have had a penalty. When a German player was "fouled" during a clash for a header inside the area and the ref. blew for a free kick from 17 meters. The situation that happened was hardly anything, and definitely not something that was worthy of calling a foul, based on what else the ref. let slide in the match... From that perspective, Germany should not have had a penalty... However, since the ref did blow for a foul, it should have been a penalty, since the situation happened more than a meter inside the area. Giving a free kick from 17 meter was a crep descicion, both from a German and an Italian perspective.

"Not only did they get a goal in the second overtime, but another goal in the overage time just to kinda kick them in the face, so to speak."

Yeah, coz when teams do a last mad-dash in the dying minutes in a desperate attempt to equalize, they never get a second goal against them because of them exposing their defence. Nope, no way, that has never happened. No sireeeee.

What I never got about this show is how they thought they would make any money on it. I mean, the idea behind Pop Idol is ingenious, really: These people get a lot of media exposure through being on national TV for months, so that when they finally win and launch their single, they already have lots of fans and they are an instantly recognizable pop star.

Dancers, however... Whoo, you're famous, but you're not really in a market where thousands of fans will buy videos showing you doing your crazy dance moves. Dancers just ain't the same kind of individual money-makers that singers are. So, honestly, I don't get where they're trying to go with this program.

That being said, I'm not a fan of either Pop Idol or So You Think You Can Dance, but I can understand where the producers were going with the former.

Why? It didn't go to a member of the winning team the last two times (Kahn 2002, Ronaldo 1998). In fact, both in 2002 and 1998 it went to a player who had a good tournament, but messed it up in the final match and were given partial blame for his team's loss.

And, please don't call it MVP, it sounds so incredibly tacky.

There was something incredibly wonderful about watching Ronaldo doing that thing where he played the ball behind his feet and kicked it with the heel you wouldn't expect him to kick it with.

Was it his display of technique, you ask.

No, it was the fact that the ball went straight to Klose who could start a counter-attack, thus displaying what I've always said. Ronaldo's got fancy moves and all, but they ain't worth shit in a football match.

Interesting observation. Germany has 14 goals in 7 matches, which is really good, actually.

However, 7 of those 14 goals came in only two matches, 4 against Costa Rica and 3 against Portugal. What's the difference between those two matches and the other five? Michael Ballack. He didn't play against Costa Rica or Portugal. Now, I ain't saying he's bad for the team, coz he's a really good player and he's created some awesome chances for Germany throughout the entire World Cup, but it is still a fact that Germany scores a heck of a lot more without him on the field.

My friends and I checked during half time. This is the first time since 1974 that the team that scored first did not win (however, you only have to go back to 1994 to find a team that won despite not having scored first. ). Crap result and I'm pissed off, France was by far the better team. I've hated Italian football for as long as I can remember, and it pisses me off to no end that they won.

Zidane put a huge dent in what has been a legendary career. 20 years from now, Zidane will not be remembered the way Beckenbauer, Cruijff, Pelé, and Maradona is remembered, because of what he did. You may say it was an isolated incident, but when it's something you do in the dying minutes of the World Cup Final, in the last match of your career, it is, well, enough to ruin your legacy. Had he not done it and had France won, Zidane would be up there with those guys.

Of course, that being said, Marco Materazzi is probably one of the biggest assholes ever to have walked onto a pitch (*cough*UEFA Champions League Quarter Final against Villarreal*cough*), and he was appearantly making racial slurs against Zidane. That doesn't mean Zidane shouldn't have had a red card, but it means that what he did was totally right! I say Zidane scored with his head twice against Brazil in '98, and he scored with his head once against Materazzi today.

Edit to clarify: I've hated Italy --> I've hated Italian football. I have nothing against Italy the country, it's the football team I can't stand.

According to the media here in Norway, Materazzi has said that he does not know what the word terrorist means. Way to not pay attention to current media discussions over the last 5 years.

What's your sleep pattern like? Are you the kind of guy who goes to bed at 22 and gets up again at 06? Do you stay up untill the late hours and wake late in the day? Perhaps you sleep during the day and get up during the night to suck the blood of the living and/or work the night shift as a gas station attendant?

Or is your sleep totally random and erratic like mine? I never know when I'm going to be tired, I never know when I'm going to need to sleep. It's frustrating, and it ruins a lot of your planning when you sleep from 08 to 15 the one day and 20 to 05 the next. See, I live on top of the world, where the sun disappears for two months a year, but where it also stays up for two months. Where currently in the midnight-sun period. I haven't seen darkness since May, and that, combined with the fact that I have nothing to do this summer, means that my sleep pattern is totally ruined. It's frustrating, it's tiresome, and I'm pretty sure it ain't healthy. I'm getting on a plane headed south in 10 hours, and I'll stay in the south for the next couple of weeks. Now, southern Norway is brighter than most places during the winter, but I think I'll at least get a couple of hours a night with darkness. I can't tell you how much I'm looking forward to that. Hopefully it's exactly what I'll need to get a regular sleep pattern again. Something to tell me "ok then, it's night now, it's time to sleep"...

Sorrry about the rant. I guess I'm tired.

Interestingly enough, VG (the biggest newspaper in Norway), had a thing on its front-page only a couple of days ago about a guy in his early twenties winning the national lottery. Now, VG is a crap newspaper with crap descicions when it comes to front-pages, but still, when they actually make a front-page story about a lottery-winner being young (his age was the focus of the story), then you know it's a rare occurence.

As a long-playing goal keeper (ever since I was a little child I've been playing goal keeper, I still do today, in an amateure-league, of course) I can say that there is nothing quite as wonderful as having a penalty kick taken against you, and I cannot see where Silvershield is coming from.

Penalty Kicks are a lot about mentality, and as the goal keeper, you can not be anything but thrilled to have a penalty kick taken against you. It's a situation in which you cannot lose, only win. If they score, no one's gonna blame ya', it was a penalty kick. If you save, you're the grand, big hero. Also, knowing that the situation is the complete opposite for the penalty taker, you have the upper hand mentally.

Anyway, I don't think penalty kicks are as random as some would have you believe. Did you know that in the history of the World Cup, Germany has only missed one single time in a penalty kick shootout (Stielike against France in 1982, a shootout they still won). That's 17 times scored out of 18 attempts. Argentina had never lost a penalty kick shootout before meeting Germany (a shootout where one of the teams would have to get their first loss). On the other end of the scale, you got Italy, who won their first World Cup shootout against France in some match a couple of days ago, and England, notoriously known for messing up shootouts. Is it random, or is there a certain skill included, when you see the same teams winning and the same teams losing over and over?

Of course I want to stop every shot that goes towards goal. I can be highly self-critical, and I hate to let a ball past me, but that doesn't stop me from going into every penalty situation knowing that I can not come out of it with shame. Goal keepers aren't expected to stop penalties, so when they do, they're heroes, when they don't, it wasn't their fault. In the mindset of pretty much every football fan on the planet, penalty = goal.

And wite, I don't think you really understand the nature of a penalty kick. Of course players are paid to perform, but I don't think I've heard of it happening once in the sport that a goal keeper has been blamed for letting in a penalty, or that he has actually even been expected to take one. You don't blame the goal keeper for not stopping a penalty, but you sure as heck blame the kicker for missing one.

And Silvershield, stopping a shot ain't completely random, some goal keeper has it as a specialty. Pepe Reina is especially good at stopping penalties. Ricardo Pereria ain't bad. Heck, Bjarte Flem of my favorite team Tromsø was known among fans for his penalty stopping, before he became known for throwing the ball into his own goal.
Now, tell me about a goal keeper who is notoriously known for not saving penalties, you say. Well, I can't. I don't think I've ever heard of a goal keeper notoriously known for not saving penalties. You don't notice a goal keeper who doesn't save penalties, because it's so damn normal. You do, however, recognize a goal keeper who saves them.

Did you know that before the World Cup Quarter Final between Argentina and Germany, Jens Lehmann saw footage of every single penalty taken by the Argentine players over the last two years? He knew the favorite spot of all the players, and he went to the right side on all four shots. He came prepared, and he knew what to do.
Speaking of Lehmann, take a look at the footage from the dying minutes of Arsenal vs. Villarreal, when Villarreal has gotten a penalty to tie it. Riquelme's face says "I don't want to do this", Lehmann's face says "This could make me a hero". Those two facial expressions really sum up what goes through the heads of the two players involved in a penalty kick situation. Oh yes, Lehmann saved the penalty by the way.

If you wanna take a screenshot, try command+control+shift+3 (sends to the clipboard). Or use Grab. (from memory, under Applications, then Utilities... )

And yeah, you can run a lot on the Mac, and Exposé makes it really easy to switch between things too

Or you could drop the shift and have the screenshot directly saved to your desktop.

Isreal is real? Didn't think a country of that name existed.

I don't really know much about this particular situation, but things have certainly been even tenser than normal in that area lately. What surprised me to read was that Israel's actions were actually condemned by our foreign minister, and appearantly of governments of other countries as well. That's sort of a first, as usually the governments are pro-Israel (a lot more so than the people, anyway).
