Well, Scrubs ain't exactly a medical show like most other medical shows... Still, I'm a big fan, most people I know are either fans because a) They've seen it and liked it, or b) they've heard my friends and I talk about it too much and decided to watch it to see what the fuss is about.
Usually, when my friends and I do or say something that is worthy of a second mentioning, one of us will say "this and that, high five!" and we'll do a high five in the style of The Todd. Dorky? Sure. Fun? Yeah. |

Reading this thread makes me want a cigarette.
*clicks bottom option and goes out for a smoke* Mind yourself, though, Sky. I started out wanting to try it, to see what it was about, and finding out it wasn't so bad after all. Then I started having a cigarette or two if anyone offered me one while we were drinking. Then it got to the point where I'd occationally buy a pack and smoke a few cigarettes now and then, but still mostly only while drinking. Then everything went bad when I moved north to go to university, started working at a place where loads of people smoked, and thus naturally made me smoke loads more, to the point I'm at today where I smoke regularly every day. |

...but no, I did not vote for Finland.
Anyways, is it just me, or was the general participation in the EuroVision quite horrid this year? Except Lithuania, which was teh , there wasn't much good at all. Sure, Finland was ok, but they would have gone no way with the same song and no costumes... In general, a disappointing EuroVision this year. Except for, of course, "vote for the winners! we are the winners!".. Just can't get that song out of my head! |

To say that we were a part of Sweden is ignorant and wrong. It is true, however, that we were a part of Denmark, as Denmark-Norway was not a union, but rather Denmark bossing us around. And Tarale, it is a very special day here, that is celebrated in a very special way. It is not used as an excuse to get a day off, but people rather make an effort to actually celebrate the day as best they can. It's really all about children, though, as it starts off with children's parades, continiues with the consumption of god-knows-how-many hot dogs and ice creams (for many Norwegians, May 17th is traditionally the first day of the year you eat an ice cream. I had an ice cream on May 17th, even though there was still snow on the ground outside), before it continiues with organized children's activities and competitions. There are also many speeches by many prominent figures, and in general a lot of activity and a lot of festivities. That being said, since I'm not a child anymore and I live in a town where I know no families (I study here, all my childhood friends etc. etc. are a long way from here), I had no reason to do an all-out celebration. As such, all I did for May 17th this year was to put on a nice shirt, my nice coat, go out and eat the aforementioned ice cream, congratulate some friends on the occasion, and meet up with some friends for a session of Vampire: The Masquerade all night long... |

A friend of mine from Texas once asked me "do y'all have the same moon over there?" (over there being Europe). I told him "no, our moon blew up. We had this accident while conducting this experiment and the whole thing went BOOM". He replied "wow, that must be weird, not having a moon to look at at night."...
I still can't get over that. I mean, the European unlucky moon experiment was all over the news. Surely he should have had heard of it? |

Well, I think the whole thing about Lithuania, is that some people just didn't get it. If you take them 100% seriously, sure, their lyrics are arrogant. But if you don't take them seriously, but rather as a tongue-in-cheek parody, it's extremely funny. I guess some people are just stupid, though. Lithuania were actually booed on stage (first and only time I've heard that in EuroVision history), so the audience must have thought they were serious in their singing.
The two ways of interpreting Lithuania's song also showed from the votes from nearly all countries. Lithuania had hardly any top scores, but yet received points from nearly all countries. So their song really appealed to some parts of the population over all of Europe, while it was not well-liked enough by all to peak anywhere. Norway sent a ballad, called "Alvedansen" (The Elf Dance). Didn't do too good. It's a standard rule, though, that whenever we send a slow song, we don't do too good, so I don't know why we persist in sending those. Must be because of that one-year success in 1995. The only thing that surprised me was that Ireland didn't give us any points, when our ballad was very proto-typical Irish. |

Europe and the World has gotten a new country. Nothing groundshaking, since Montengro was pretty much independent from Serbia in all important political fields, anyway, but it is an important symbol of Montenegro's absolute independence. With that, what was once the Republic of Yugoslavia is now pretty much completely dissolved. I'm guessing Kosovo (which is now under UN jurisdiction, though officially a part of Serbia) will follow soon, though Serbia of course wants to retain control. Anyways, a joyous time for those Montenegrins who wanted independence, my congratulations to them. | |||

Besides, they are at home. Germany will beat England in the final, and I will be extremely happy. Oh, and South Korea should crash and burn in the most embarrassing manner. That would be great. |

Finally, my internet connection is back up.
Well, the student pub shows every single match on a big screen, so I'm pretty much there from 15:00 to 23:00 every day. Well, as I said in the previous thread, it's gonna be Germany. Sorry if I confused anyone by saying everyone knows they're going to win. I know Brazil is the big favorite, the "everyone"-part was basically me trying to be arrogant, which I think is important to be when you talk about football. Also, as I said about the US being 8-12 years away from making a realistic challenge, well, the Czechs kinda proved that, didn't they? Australia, which is another team I like, impressed me a lot today. Here's to hoping they manage to get a draw against the Croats and go through to the second round on goal difference (which I see as their most realistic chance of going through to the second round. Japan should be toast against Croatia and Brazil, and Brazil should get 9 points in this group). England played crap against Paraguay, keep it up and my dream Germany vs. England final will disappear. Ok, admitedly, Germany's defence was lacklustre against Costa Rica, but the offence was fantastic. Thorsten Frings for the win. Anyways, everything is going great so far, and I'm having the time of my life. For a person who basically lives and breathes football, the World Cup is extraordinary. |

Say it with me kids - Philipp Lahm. He made Poland look like fools at times from his left back role. Only thing missing today was a goal from his involvement. Other than that, he was pretty much fantastic. All in all, Poland was totally destroyed by a German team that deserved to win a lot more than 1-0.
And I don't get the whining over the time slots. 15:00, 18:00, and 21:00 fits me perfectly. As for the big match yesterday, Brazil were lucky to win it. Ronaldo was woeful. I've never seen a more immobile player in my life. His longest and fastest run was when he ran towards the subs bench to be rightfully taken off. Anyway, I was close to killing some people at the pub yesterday. Basically, every time the Brazilians did anything that meant more than simply passing the ball forward (such as making rather unimpressive technique moves that basically any player in the world can do, and that is done a fair ammount of times during a match) some people in the audience went "Whoa! Yeah!" as if the player had pulled off the greatest stunt in the universe. If any other player for any other team had done it, no one would have reacted, but as soon as a Brazilian does it, it's all "Oh my God, this person is the greatest player to have graced God's green earth!". Get over yourselves, already, the Brazilians ain't greater than sliced bread. |

The whole point with Spain, Arwon, is that they use all energy they've got at looking really good in the opening matches, while the other big teams play it cool and wait for the important rounds. That way, when push comes to shove, Spain is out of goodieness, and they lose out. You'd think they'd learn one day, but obviously not.
That being said, I actually believed Spain could go all the way 4 years ago. Of course, they could have gone all the way back then if they hadn't had the ref. they had against Korea, so it wasn't as much a choke back then, as it was horrible refing. And I'm sure you ranted about Ronaldo yesterday, Colin, but I wasn't there then, so I'll do my ranting about him now. |

Damned people setting up meetings in the middle of the World Cup. I'm missing both the England and Sweden match tonight, and I only get the first half of Costa Rica's. *grumble, grumble*
I don't know if you noticed or not yesterday, but Karim Essediri came on for Tunisia. He is the fourth player to have been in the World Cup and to have played for Tromsų at some point during his career. The other three being Sigurd Rushfeldt, Roger Nilsen, and Tore Andre Flo (of which Rushfeldt even played for Tromsų while he was in the 1994 World Cup). So, even though Essediri no longer dons Tromsų's red and white colours, I'm just happy to see a player who spent a few seasons at the club do well for his national side. Ohh well... Costa Rica vs. Ecuador in 15 minutes. |

Argentina's attack today was out of this world, The match, however, was horribly boring, it was all decided too fast. Angola vs. Mexico was the complete oposite. Horrible attacking play, but exciting and even match. Strangely enough, right after the first half started, 6 guys from Angola walked into the pub to watch the match (). I have no idea why they were there, but it was fun, seeing as how I was rooting for Angola (tend to root for the underdog when two teams that I don't have any interest in play).
Edit: Angola won't advance with a tie, Danielle. They'll have to beat Iran to advance, in addition to Portugal beating Mexico in such a way that Angola can advance on goal difference. Oh, and by the way, how is it that a defence consisting of mainly 2nd tier players in Portugal and a GK who is a free agent has managed to let in only 1 goal in 2 matches? Originally posted by Colin Bah, you can call "Mexico's attack fucked up" as much as you want, fact is that without Angola's defence, Mexico's attack woudln't have fucked up. Sure, Portugal plays like the Southern Europeans always do, but you can't blame their single one goal on that alone. Angola's defence has been ace so far, despite the fact that they all play in crappy clubs. Ghana outplayed the Czechs, it was good. Luigi-San: If the US were to win, and Italy were to lose, it would be decided on goal difference (total goals scored versus total goals conceeded throughout all group matches). The US's current goal difference, -3 (1-4), versus Italy's +2 (3-1), means that the US should hope that this scenario won't occur. Unless by some freak occurence the US beats Ghana 3-0 and Italy loses to the Czechs 3-0, bringing the goal differences to US 0 and Italy -1. neotransotaku: It changed from 2 to 3 points for a win during the early nineties (Euro 92 had 2 points for a win, World Cup 94 had 3 points for a win). This was because a tie was seen as giving too many points. Two ties equaled one win, so they changed the points for a win to 3, making it so that you'd have to tie three times in order to obtain as many points as you would for winning, making ties less good. In a group with only 4 teams playing each other once, it usually doesn't matter too much, but in a league consisting of many teams playing each other two times or more, it does actually come into play quite often. |

My quick guide to the offside rule:
Basically, an offside is called if a player is in offside position when the ball is played (you may be in an offside position before or after the ball is being played without penalty, but you may not be in offside position the moment the ball is played. This is why, when they show replays after offsides are called, they stop the video the exact moment the ball is being passed, thus you can judge for yourself whether the player is offside or not). In addition, a player must be judged as having influenced play when he was in offside position. Basically, you can have a scenario where Player A has the ball and passes it to player B. Player B is onside, but Player C is offside. Player C, however, is on the left flank, while Player B is on the right flank. The ref thus judges that Player C is not influencing play (since he is way over on the other side of the field), and thus the ref does not call an offside. Also remember that offsides can be called retroactively. In a scenario, Player A shoots while Player B is in an offside position. The ref feels that Player B is not influencing play, and as such he does not call an offside. However, Player A's shot bounces of the post, and is picked up by Player B. The ref now calls for an offside, since Player B gained an advantage from being in offside when the original shot was kicked by Player A. Also, remember, you can never be offside if you are on your own half of the field (ergo: the area in which you can be in an offside position starts after you cross the center line), and you can also never be offside if you are behind the ball (Pimpong from Ghana should learn this, as he wouldn't have been offside when he scored against the Czech Rep if he had only taken two steps backwards and thus he would have been behind the ball in stead of in front of it). You are also not offside if the ball is played from either a goal kick, corner kick, or throw-in. Now that's all fine and dandy, you might think. But one question remains: When are you in an offside position? The answer is that you are in an offside position if you are closer to the opponent's goal line (the short line) than all but one of their players (this usually means that you are offside if you are closer than all but their goal keeper, but it can be anyone, for example if the goal keeper had run up to the other goal in a last-minute attempt at scoring a crucial goal on a corner kick). You are in an onside position if there are at least two players between you and the goal line (usually the goal keeper + a defender). It's Italy, guys. And it's no big surprise, really. The Serie A is one of the biggest leagues in the world, and you don't really see many big Italians going to other leagues, they tend to stay in their home league. Course, who knows what happens with the corruption scandal that's errupting now?
Speaking of trivia. Here's one for ya: What is the only nation in the World Cup not to have a single player from its domestic league in the squad. (This one's really not that surprising, either) (edited by Salmon on 06-20-06 08:53 PM) |

Ok, I'm beginning to feel real sorry for the US now. The red cards against Italy were one wrong, one doubtful. And that PK that Ghana got was so cheap it was almost ridiculous. I mean, if that was a PK, well then there have been many situations earlier in the tournament that should have been a PK.
The US's goal looked like offside to me at first, but after looking at it in replay, the American goal scorer was behind the ball when the ball was passed. Fair goal. Hope is not over yet for the US, though. Italy is up 1-0 and 11 men against the Czech Rep's 10, meaning that if the US can turn it around and get a 3-2 result, they should go through to the second round, assuming Italy can keep their lead. |
