Squash Monster, !
Diplomacy is fantastic, without a doubt my favorite game. I get together with friends now and then to play it, and I must say, there's nothing more satisfying than plunging a dagger deep into your good friend's neck. (yeah, the game involves a lot of backstabbing) |

| Soooo...
A warm summer's day, maybe a couple of steaks on a barbeque grille, and a cold beer. Christmas dinner, ribs, sausages, potatoes, delicious sauce, and a small glass of aquavit. A match at the pub, friends next to you, excitement, and a half litre in everyone's hands. A dinner at a restaurant, delicious food, a glass of red wine. A long day of studying at the university, relaxation at the pub, a glass or two at the student pub at the end of the day with some friends. Yeah, of course, Danielle, the only time one would ever drink would be when one would want to be "getting wasted, acting like morons, and seeing who'll do the stupidest things". |

| Now, I was sitting here, pondering the group stage in the UEFA Cup, when this interesting scenario sprung to mind. In it, four teams, called A, B, C, D, and E for simplicity's sake, are playing each other in a round-robin tournament, equal to that of the UEFA Cup. Just like the UEFA Cup, the best 3 are qualified for the next round. Now, with these results you have here:
A 0-0 B C 0-2 D E rests B 3-2 C D 0-1 E A rests B 0-0 D E 3-4 A C rests D 0-0 A C 0-0 E B rests A - C E - B D rests A 5pts-3matches 1W 2D 0L GD: 4-3 +1 B 5pts-3matches 1W 2D 0L GD: 3-2 +1 D 5pts-4matches 1W 2D 1L GD: 2-1 +1 E 4pts-3matches 1W 1D 1lL GD: 4-4 0 C 1pts-3matches 0W 1D 2lL GD: 2-5 -3 You'll have, as far as I can tell (and if my layout is correct), a situation where Team A, despite leading the group, not is sure of qualification, as a loss to team C with two goals would send them at five points with a -1 GD, and a draw between E and B would then have B win the group at 6 points, and D and E qualify at 5 points with better goal differences than team A. Team B would not be sure of qualification either, seeing as how a loss to team E would send them below team E on points, and below team D on goal difference. This along with a team A win against team C would knock team B out of the competition. Team D, however, would be assured qualification. They only need to have to teams behind them to qualify, and they've already beaten Team C regardless if they win or not. Since team B and team E play each other, a team B win would mean team E fell behind on fewer points, a draw would mean team D beat team E on goal difference, while a team E win would mean team D beat team B on goal difference. So what's my point here of this little scenario? Well, just that I find it fascinating, the whole thing. With a system such as this one, it is, the way I see it, technically possible for a team in third place to be ensured qualification for the next round, even though the teams in first and second are not. It may be highly unlikely that it will ever happen, but it sure would be funny to see it happen some time. |

| Yeah, but that scenario you're putting up there seems so hair-brained that the only way I could see that happening was if you had a ref who would do things like, oh I don't know, let me find my list...
A: Not give you a penalty when your striker, who is alone against the goalkeeper, is tackled from behind by a player who is nowhere near tackling the ball. B: Blow an offside against you when your striker is alone against the goalkeeper, when the replays clearly show the striker was onside. C: Allow the 3-3 goal that was scored against you, even though the player who set up the goal with the cross pass took down the ball with his freaking hands. D: Call a foul against the goalkeeper on a corner, when what really happened was that the goalkeeper managed to drop the ball he tried to pick up, without any players near him, and then one of the defenders managed to kick it into his own net while trying to clear the ball. E: By virtue of calling that foul, instead of giving the goal that should have been, the ref would then also partake in making the 4-3 goal, since it came in the attack that followed the disallowed 3-4 goal. I mean, only by having a ref showing such extreme and true incompetence in refing a football match could the scenario you just put forth ever happen. |

| If you're in one of the lead parts, try to get romantic with whoever is having the lead part of the oposite sex, especially if the two of you have never met before. Under no circumstances should the two of you have sex, however. This is a sure way to get the both of you rescued. | |||

| If your cat is acting weird, and there's a story around town that a huge mutated tiger is killing people, kill your cat.
That being said, if any of you have ever seen the horrible Danish film called "Kat" that the above rule was based on, I feel sorry for you. |

| My favourite comic strip right now would be M. M is a Norwegian strip, so I don't expect any of y'all to know it. I'm guessing many of you would like it, especially Nick, seeing as how all it basically ever does is reference Star Wars (in a clever way).
As for comic strips of international standing, I'm a big fan of Berke Breathed's Bloom County/Outland/Opus-serieses. As for stories, I'm currently reading "Y: The Last Man". Haven't gotten around to buying Book 6 yet, though. |

United is out of the CL! Mohahahahaha!
Any thoughts now? It's up to Bayern, Barca, Lyon, or Chelsea to take it, I'd say. |

| Well, yes, Lyon (and especially Carew) has gotten a lot of coverage in the Norwegian media this season, but their form still speaks for itself. In the Ligue 1, 13 wins, 4 ties, 0 losses. Add that to their 5 wins and 1 tie from the Champions League (did you see Carew's goal against Real Madrid away, by the way? Beautiful), and you have some strong statistics.
As for McLeish, well, he's kind of like Rafa last year. Good in Europe, not so good domestically. |

| A: Germany - Poland - Ecuador - Costa Rica
I could see Ecuador causing an upset, but it will most likely be Poland going through. Germany, being the always-fit-for-world-cups team they are, and having home field, will breeze through this. B: England - Sweden - Paraguay - Trinidad & Tobago Well, it's a given. Paraguay was better before, England is a good side, Sweden has probably the world's greatest striker-pairing in Larsson/Ibrahimovic (I know many will disagree, but those people are simply wrong). Trinidad & Tobago won't have nothing to do here. C: Argentina - S&M - Netherlands - Ivory Coast Well, here you've got sort of a semi-group of death. Argentina and The Netherlands should be favorites, but I see one of thems stumbling. It could easily be Argentina, but my hunch says it'll be The Netherlands. (Of course, it could just as well be wishful thinking. After all, RvN is an S.O.B. and deserves to go out early) D: Portugal - Mexico - Iran - Angola Well, dugnabit, this ain't fair. Mexico ain't that great no more but they got an extremely easy group here. You've got Angola, which I don't see going nowhere, Portugal, which is way overrated (Euros silver or no Euros silver aside), and Iran, which is, well, Iran. I'd love to see Portugal go out, only to see little ms. Ronaldo cry again, but that won't happen in this group. E: Czech Rep. - Italy - USA - Ghana I don't see the US going through it in this group. They're nowhere near what their FIFA ranking makes them out to be, and they're grouped with two powerhouses in football. Sure, they could cause an upset, but I doubts it. F: Brazil - Japan - Croatia - Australia Well, Brazil had a fairly easy draw. Croatia isn't anywhere close to what they were 8 years ago. Australia with all their foreign stars could be interesting, but will they be able to build something functional? Japan was the Asian team that impressed me the most during the World Cup 3 years ago. G: France - South Korea - Switzerland - Togo Oh, come on! This is everything but fair! I wanted to see Korea crash and burn now that they won't have all the refs in the world cheating their way into the bronze final, and what do you give me? This group? Switzerland could take their spot away, but I just don't see it happening, even with fair and unbiased refs. H: Ukraine - Tunisia - Spain - Saudi Arabia Spain's mandatory choke comes early this year, as African champions Tunisia (with, god willing, Karim Essediri playing... A man can dream! ) knock them out of the tournament. Ukraine is an interesting team, and I could see them topping this group just as they topped their quals group consisting of Turkey, Greece, and Denmark!
Should this hold, we'll have this round of 16: Germany vs. Sweden Argentina vs. Mexico England vs. Poland Portugal vs. S&M Czech Rep. vs. Japan France vs. Tunisia Brazil vs. Italy Ukraine vs. South Korea Quarter finals: Germany vs. Argentina Czech Rep. vs. France England vs. S&M Brazil vs. Ukraine Semi finals: Gerrmany vs. Czech Rep. England vs. Brazil Bronze Final: Czech Rep. vs. Brazil Final: Germany vs. England Let it be known that this whole list was done half by head, and half by heart, and should so be taken with a grain of salt. |

| Well, it's the 40th anniversary of England's World Cup victory over Germany on their soil and everything. It would only be fair to have the Germans get their revenge. I'd hope the match went to penalties, and Wayne Rooney joins the likes of Gareth Southgate and David Beckham on the list of people who couldn't handle the pressure during a penalty shootout.
And that's a no-go on the releasing of Canadian players. January is an important part of the Norwegian season. Ehrrrm... You see, all the players have to, like, go, errrrr, fight polar bears then! It says so in their contract. All polar bear fighting, all January... Good old Norwegian football tradition... |

| According to Wikipedia, 72% of Americans believe in some form of creationism, while the number of creationist believers in the rest of the western world is at <5%.
Of course, the complete validity of the 72%-claim can be disputed, since the scientists took one polled question and base their assumptions on the belief of those who answered the poll on that (yeah, so I'm having a social scientific method exam on Friday, so I'm pretty much trying to focus all my thoughts on such things as validity of polls...). Still, the vast difference between the two numbers show that creationist beliefs are a lot more prevalent in America. This was also my experience when I was 'cross the pond a couple of years ago. I met a whole lot of people believeing in creationism, something I had never experienced before in Europe. As for me? I don't see the problem with mixing science and faith. Science is about knowledge, religion is about belief. The two are not mutually exclusive. Besides, the two are concenrned with two different areas of life, the natural and the spiritual. As one man whose name I do not remember once said: "Everytime we discover something new, I feel good knowing that now we know something that only God knew before us". |
