Bowser, Vanilla Dome, Castle, and Ending are good. But can they stand up against a tag team of all the great atmospheric world maps plus Sky and Water? The answer is no.

And SMB3 has a really sweet ending theme too. Just thinking about it makes it get stuck in my head again.

In RAM at 7E13C1 lies the current 16 X 16 overworld tile Mario is on. It's also the third number in the 16 X 16 overworld status bar in LM; for example the tile for Yoshi's house is 56.

I noticed because at x21336 there is a branch statement adapted from a Pro Action Replay code BMF found that, if set to F0, means Mario can warp to Star World simply by pressing the select button. There's some code after that that deals with the tile Mario is currently standing on.

I really can't ignore the glitches present in abusing the item box like that. I'd like to completely rewrite the powerup system instead and see where I can go from there.

The two big issues I have with SMW's powerups are that you can run back to any level you like and stockpile as many powerups as you like, and once you do your abilities rise by an unbalanced amount. Heck, even without powerups you can spin jump, and that alone is ridiculous, allowing you to bounce off of things like fire and spikes that obviously should be deadly.

I don't know how I'd go about solving that, though.

-10 for turning what should be a miniature Macromedia Flash file or some such into a 13 MB monstrocity. I'm not downloading a 13 mebibyte trailer, not even if it were for Super Mario Odyssey.

That's a nasty looking waterfall. It should only be 3 or 4 tiles high, not start all the way back at the mouth of the river.

If the original screenshots were broken down and put into a flash file, yes, the result should be much smaller. Anything else added like text or anything that didn't have to be fluid could be edited to be much smaller. But there's little point in going on since I didn't download the trailer in the first place.

Okay, so I had a block idea. It would be called the ransom block and when you hit it with 30 coins in your possession, it would take those 30 and give you a Yoshi in return. Otherwise it would just give you a single coin.

I wrote most of it; the ips file attatched will modify the 30-coin block so it takes away 30 coins in exchange for a 1up instead of merely checking to see how many coins in the level you have collected. It hasn't been tested much at all, so beware.

What I still need is an address that would allow me to change the 30-coin block so it gives you Yoshi instead of a 1up. I believe most of the 30-coin block code is at or after x73A7.

This forum really should be removed, yeah. It was originally designed to divert good threads from being buried in SMW Hacking by the n00bs, but now that it's not even Advanced SMW Hacking anymore its purpose is lost and now we've got ROM hacking and SMW Hacking threads spread between the their forums and this forum and it's a bit of a mess.

I think SMRPG had some stylistic problems, and I can understand why you don't like it with you being Stylish and all, but come on. You play as Bowser and there's a great scene with a chain chomp and there are various other awesomes dispersed throughout the game. You heard what the fish said. Go play it. Go play it now.

Anyway, yeah, Doopliss rocked. Doopliss rocked so hard. If they bothered to program it in, having an enemy-copying ally would be pretty sweet and you can't have a duplighost without duplication.

That's one of the worst ideas I've ever heard, Xeruss, and that's coming from a guy who takes to Kyouji Craw an awful lot.

It would force you not to use use coins or brown blocks, brown blocks being what nearly every hittable block turns into. Furthermore, it wouldn't even solve the problem this guy is talking about, controlling the direction! What were you thinking when you typed that?

Posted on 04-26-06 01:08 AM, in The little 'x' tiles Link
In case this is at all pertinent, while the big X in GFX00 doesn't seem to be used at all except by LM to represent unusable sprites, it is overwritten by Mario's graphics during a level and thus that space cannot be used then unless you want to get a tileful of plumber face!

As for the smaller Xs found throughout things like Bowser's tileset, yes, I believe those are completely unused. All tiles must fit into half-pages, so I believe there were naturally times where a space was available when not needed. The X seems like it would would help the developers to know that there was no chance a particular 8x8 tile was being used or reserved.

After all, the blank tile behind the first Koopa's head will cause numerous problems if changed, so simply leaving a tile blank would not be a sufficient way to indicate that a tile was unused. Perhaps there were even more blank but used tiles during development!

HHH3... são você um tolo? Português é a língua de Brasil.

Brazillian SMW Hacker, you really need to start finding things out on your own. There are many tutorials out there for most of the things you have mentioned, and if you still can't understand the material there's not much more we can do. Go into the rom and start using Lunar Magic, start changing values, and use Google or another search engine to gather all the information you can.

There's a reason many people tend not to answer requests: the requesters often haven't done a good enough job looking around themselves before asking for help.

There's no good reason why they can't both be called sprites since they're both closely entwined and it's rather easy to simply use terms like "sprite behavior" and "sprite graphics" to determine what you mean to say.

However, this wouldn't stop me from being completely on board with SSO and NSO simply because those acronyms are just so damn cool. They're cool even though such differentiation through complicated acronyms is absurd. That's integral to their coolness, really.

What is stopping me is that there's a difference between sprites placed via LM, sprite behavioral subroutines that run every frame, and the graphics actually drawn onto the screen. That's more than SSO and NSO can properly describe, and I won't use such an incomplete acronym set! I won't!

I like pastel backgrounds. I think the Mario Hacking world and maybe the world in general could benefit from more pastel backgrounds. Maybe that's why everybody in Kirby games with pastel backgrounds seems to be obscenely happy.

That said, the game does not manage to even do that right. There's yellow in the blue mountain and the whole thing could use some more tint.

And, of course, without this poorly applied pastel background, there's nothing else but the same old tiles and apparent unintersting level design. I haven't played the hack, but I'll bet you dollars to donuts that its level design is uninteresting.

Oh, but then there's Peach, whose face is painfully bright.

For the record, the only reason I'm here complaining would be because Alastor the Stupid saw fit to bother me. If a hack is as as uninteresting as this one I usually don't comment or read replies at all.

Because your quotes are so messed up, I'm not quite sure who's saying what but I'll say this anyway:

Demo World is not a n00b hack. It's complete, it has heavy graphical editing (and not too shabby, either) and even asm hacks. Its level design is seriously lacking... for a hack of that calibur. It had some bad mistakes, but it had so much put into it that "n00b hack" or even "practically n00b hack" doesn't do it justice. For many hacks Demo World's level design would be an improvement.

No, I haven't seen many hacks these days better than Demo World. I haven't seen any hacks as good, for that matter, except for the exceptional Super Mario Odyssey and Mario's Return. And those are both demos.

Posted on 04-30-06 03:18 AM, in ROM hackers mass interview Link
My username is Glyph Phoenix. The only game I hack is Super Mario World for the Super Nintendo. I have made a couple of lackluster hacks in the past. I'm not fond of Super Mario World, but it has an editor called Lunar Magic which is very likely the most powerful and user-friendly ROM hacking tool in existance.

I continue to hack SMW because I am familiar with it and through hex editing I can do more with the game than a good deal of other hackers and I can certainly do more with SMW than I can with other games. I don't think I'd enjoy picking a different game and having a good deal of my knowledge base unusable.

1.What draws you to the ROM hacking community?

Lots of the regular members know games so well. I don't know a community of people so knowledgeable about the inner workings of games, and if I did I doubt the community would be as active as this one.

2. Do you think playing/modifying hacked ROMs should be more user friendly?

Yes, definately. While good utilities exist now, that is no reason not to improve them. While the backlash from inept users annoys me as much as the next forumer, I believe that user friendliness trickles up and the simpler it is for the inexperienced members, the more that expert members can do.

In addition, once new users are introduced to hacking through a simple device and become experienced enough, they tend to give back to the community in the form of utilities and usable patches. It is important to note that the great majority of new users never reach that point.

3.What are the advantages/disadvantages of ROM hacking vs. ripped sprites with code written from scratch?

The advantage is that an existing, often quite good game already exists when you start hacking. The big disadvantage is that if you want to change even the smallest things, you have to do some considerable work finding and documenting a feature first. Building a fangame from the ground up would be quite a task, and never quite the same as the original ROM and Emulator. However, modifying an existing fangame with your own source code is much, much easier than with a ROM.

4. Do you think there are limits to what people should be allowed to do with their games?

That debate is a bit of a mess. There's the matter of 'limits' often limiting the average user greatly, even too much, but not the experienced hacker at all, there's the matter of games people would otherwise buy being downloaded and played for free, and there's the matter of old games that don't generate sales that give people fun through hacking that they could never give during their original run.

Games could all cost money and not be copyable but that would lead to theft and overpricing and industries that release games entirely for profit and disregard gameplay. Games could all be free and copyable but then honest creators couldn't make money and not be financially motivated or even financially stable enough to continue to make them.

I think the financial slight on creators through free games means little compared to the industrial consumption of creativity and overall design we have now, but trying to rationalize this mess and suggest proper limits is certainly more than a 16 year old should be trying to do in a 5th of a forum post.

5.What do you think about the future of the ROM hacking community?

It's hard to say. On one hand, taking into account the natural progression of utilities and of hacks, one would think the community would keep advancing. On the other hand, tracing this board back I see very little progression at all. In fact, the best Super Mario World hacks by far are now finished and on hiatus, respectively, and they both haven't had releases in quite a long time.
