Hi, I've started work on a Super Mario Land remake, and it's coming along reasonably well. The only issue I have right now, is that it'll take me ages to convert the levels without having access to the original layouts.. It'll be one of those "Take several hours, one bit at a time, pen and graph paper" type things..

If anyone has any info on the way the levels are stored (Frank15 seems to be quite knowledgeable. Your Super Super Mario Land's great!) then could you please give me a few pointers, to get me heading in the right direction?

Thanks..

I came here yesterday, with a single question.

I'm more of a coder of games, than a hacker of games, so I figured I'd never bother posting in the hacking section of this forum. To be honest, in all my times making games, I've never really felt the need to hack another person's game. To take a level of my own design, and stick it into another game feels kindof like a waste of time. If I ever do come up with good designs, I pretty much stick them into my own games.. It'd be a waste of good design not to.
The only time I ever did feel I could give it a go, was with Sonic 2, when I felt I could stick my own "Platdude" character into the engine, and give the whole game a weird Platdude Blocky feel.. That didn't go too well, so I gave up really early on.

So, I came over, and asked my question. I felt that my question about reading level formats wasn't too much of a "Hack", and was more of a "Read", so it'd be safe enough in the general "Help" section, instead of having to bother registering for approval to the Hacking section. Plus, lets be honest, given my lack of Hacking ability/usage, I'd probably very rarely visit enough to warrant having to register into the Hacking section, so it'd be a waste of time having the moderators tweak my acount for what in all honesty would probably be a pretty much unused account.

And so this morning, I was a bit miffed when I found myself having to ask for authorisation in order to reply to my own topic which had of course been moved to the nice new Read-Only section.. Ho hum..

I guess I have to ask for approval!

Yippie.. (I'll let you decide whether that's sarcasm or not, I honestly can't decide myself)

Thanks for the link to the maps. Using intelligent image reading, I think I can get my proggy to read most of the level detail from those maps. They're most useful.

Slight issue being the lack of Enemy placement. So, again, if anyone could help on that angle, that'd be much appreciated. Thanks again.

WIP :
Not fullscreen, and will probably change as dev progresses.
Thanks again to Jouw for the Heads-up to the level images.
Plenty of work to do, yet!

Great, thanks for that, makes a lot of sense and helps quite a bit. I'll have a play about with that, tonight.
One little thing, are the baddies and such also stored in that same area, or are they in a seperate place?
