| Size is a very good reason for not carrying around a ROM alongside the editor but are you confusing illegal restrictions with convenience of design. It all sounds a lot like fear instead of thought.
What we do IS illegal however you look at it. I wouldn't say in a immoral sense but rather the fact that Nintendo's lawyers deemed it so makes it that way. I've always been a little confused about the focus of this thread. Did you create it to comment on the lack of niceties between hackers or perhaps just to state that this simply isn't an unreasonable idea and it is possible to edit a game minus the ROM. All the points made by you and everyone here are viable when it comes to the reasons for romless editors but even you yourself state that this isn't something that would likely work with very many things...And thus so far only proven to be successful with F-Zero X. As in another thread the origins, reasons and need to call the scene "hacking" seems to directly relate to breaking this law made up by stupid guys in suits; whereas the reason PC game modding appears to be called what it is, is due to it being supported by creators. So what does this make your editor BGNG? Is it a ROM hacking editor or a piece of video game modding software that happens to also work with ROMs made only illegal if the user doesnt already own the existing title in physical form. I hope they do own F Zero X though cause it's a dam good game. ![]() |

However something that is contained in the Expansion Kit on the 64dd has just been brought to mind. With the KIT being inbuilt you are given the ability to instantly test out your courses for unseen discrepancies like 30 racers all falling off at once around the second bend. I'm assuming that without the rom your editor will not be able to do this. Have you taken this into account and thought up alternatives if needed? (edited by NEONswift on 01-21-06 12:22 PM) |

Originally posted by BGNGDon't agree with your statement. Im a longtime player of Fzero X and user of the expansion kit and even now with the complexity of editing 3d racing environments its still nearly impossible to judge it and this is even without taking into account the unpredictability of AI. With human judgement out the window this then leaves you with "Trial and Error" and the thing about trial and error is that you'll need the rom to actually test out the custom tracks or else you'll end up passing on a file amongst the community that could be flawed. This therefore means that the editor is rom-less but in order to create anything with more skill involved than the original Fzero X tracks will require the rom. Wouldnt this make it an editor that still requires the thing you claim it does not? My previous post and all my current questions were less related directly to your editor (although i was interested) but more on the impact of the rom not being there. Mr Guy who original made the thread on rom-less editors may have been asking a reasonable question and many replied unreasonably to him but if youd gone and told him youd released an F Zero X editor that didnt require any roms in the long run he still would have needed to get his hands on that ROM..legally or not. |

| Has anyone else noted the obscurity of this entire thread?!! Firstly it shouldnt exist with sites like romhacking.net open which have access to the MMX 3 editor and could have been easily checked... or Andy could have just asked in the stickied thread already present at the top of this forum about game editors.
Sonicandtails the rules about roms exist because if companies whose games are being linked to (directly or indirectly) happen to take notice then acmlm could still be shutdown for facilitating the transfer of roms amongst an online community. Even if it is one of the more exagurated outcomes of say capcom's lawyers doing their thing it still doesnt entitle you to tell insectduel to feck off even if you do add PLZ to the sentence. Oh and insectduel i really hope you do know the dif between hardware and software.. Back on topic ive always found it really difficult to get used to the no ingame graphic editors, reason i couldnt get into Eggvine either.. Guess thats just me taking Hyrule and Lunar Magic for granted. (edited by NEONswift on 01-26-06 06:52 PM) |

| Possibly the most humourous thread i have ever read. There was alan trying to claim it as his brothers and then you VL-Tone came along and totally wiped the floor with him. Bit wiered out by the whole metal cap flying. Any bugs affected by both caps being active at once? What happens when you metal cap fly under water for example? | Some tips and advice. Firstly i wouldnt post pictures of that collosal size. Im running on 1600x1200 resolution and my window barely ft it all in. If you must use such large images then post links. Gotta think of the poeple who have res like 800x600 this would absolutely piss em off.
Right onto the zelda stuff. Read through this... Its Orochimaru's Hyrule Magic FAQ http://www.angelfire.com/magic2/hyrule2/PGTZ3E13.PDF. All the info on doors that youll need should be in there. Its not a glitch which is occuring but the game placing down an open doorway to stop Link walking through a solid wooden door. If you ever decide to get into ASM or mess with hex then MathOnNapkin's documents on ASM addresses will come in handy http://mypage.iu.edu/~dwaggone/ For GFX Editing i would suggest using tools such as YY-CHR to actually edit the extracted graphics. graphics which can be extracted using Fusoya's ZCompress which can be found here: http://fusoya.panicus.org/zelda/index.html. I personally work with Paint Shop Pro to edit the gfx and then reinsert it using YY-CHR and Zcompress. But if you do that then you have to remember the limitations of the palettes. The moving of link's bed position is gonna be a hex value somewhere in the rom. I was planning on looking for it at some point anyway. Once i do find it ill post it in this thread or at the general screenshots thread so keep an eye out. Unless someone does it first. I am not someone who likes to be bugged. I work slow but get there eventually but i hate people constantly PMing me. So keep that in mind. Also sorry i couldnt give you a link to YY-CHR im in the midst of playing Resident Evil 4 again and i couldnt be bothered to look. Shouldnt be too hard to find just take a look at ROMhacking.net i recon. |

| My own ideas for smash..
Characters need to be more represented by their current/best line of games. For example Luigi needs to be less Mario like and more geared towards Luigi's mansion which is his primary title and Maybe have two links but have small link the Cel shaded version from Wind Waker and the adult as the link from Twilight Princess. Just adds a bit of veriety. Possible costume varients. Mario could have Normal, Dr Mario and Paper Mario etc costume choices. This could give Hal Labs the chance to free up some character slots and create more individual characters. Stronger female characters. I always hated using Peach and Zelda they never seem to have enough kick in them. Samus was the only sturdy fem character. Maybe some of the women from Advance Wars. Those hardened bitches would kick Mario's arse. NEW EDITIONS AND ALTERATIONS TO THE CHARACTER LIST LUIGI - WARIO - Pre-Wario Land 4...prefferably Wario Land 1...Stronger than mario but slower with similar moves CAPTAIN OLIMAR - can pull out pikmin similar to Link's Bombs and throw them. Red, Yellow, Blue, Purple, White Pikmin all with powers that are relevant to their use in the games. TOAD - This little guy hasnt had the limelight since Super Mario Bros 2 (USA) and seriously needs to have a comback that doesnt involve being pulled from Peaches Skirt. Could be equipped with SMB2 vegetables. KOOPA TROOPA - Agree as previously stated by others that he needs to have a presence in this game. He ruled in Super Mario Kart and is always the best of the weaker bad guys in everygame yet Nintendo very rarely use him. GANONDORF - Not the Zelda 64 version but rather the fatter scarier Wind Waker one with the duel blades. FALCO - Must keep cause hes my fav and absolutely is the fastest character!!! NOOK - Cooler than the main animal crossing character and could easily kick your arse with the shovel. SONIC & KNUCKLES - I know they arent nintendo characters but if anyone can make these characters cool its Hal Laboratories. Sega im sure owe nintendo one after they got the chance to work on something as excellent as F-Zero. Tails needs to stay well away cause he's basicly the Robin of Video Game sidekicks...Crap! TOADSWORTH - Don't know why but this old codger fascinates me. He's like toad very very old. Bit like how Donkey Kong Jr became the current DK. ARENAS - Worms type destructable landscape perhaps. This would co-incide with the use of Knuckles for example who could hit the ground causing an earthquake. - Other characters like Bowser could ground slam ripping a whole in the earth like he does in Super Mario Bros 3. - Really need to be more geared towards each character more. Each level would show off a piece of nintendo history; something that combined with the trophies and collection of characters would be great for those of us who have spent 2 decades enjoying their creations.Nostalgia amongst older video gamers is a hit that needs to be taken advantage of more. Not in a profit way but more of a show of appreciaton towards us. The revolution after all is going to backwards compatible with emulating older systems and running gamecube games so this would all fit perfectly. - Levels which utilizes the hitting off walls/wall jumping elements of SSBM. What i mean is shafts for the characters to wall jump off. Maybe a two leveled arena and then a level that is surrounded by walls except for a shaft in the middle that is the only location to KO. This would encourage more use of the smackdown attacks and keep the mayhem of the bottom part of Hyrule Temple without having to keep that crap awful arena. ITEMS - They need to keep the baseball bat bag mode which was excellent fun though shortlived. And maybe add the bag as an actual prop for arenas. - Make the lightsword beam more prominent. It lost its charm in SSBM but was excellent on the 64. - Not sure if this would work but one idea was unique character items. A bit like the ones in Mario Kart that are specific to who you are. Would mean killer moves were possible but not all the time and minus a crappy charge meter. - Dum down the POKEMON balls...theyre getting to be a bit too much. I always used them to hit people in the face with anyway. Very rarely for the contents inside. CONTROLS The implementation of the Revolution controller could be for item throwing. The left analog would be specific for moving your character while the remote could be flicked to use/throw whatever item that character was holding. My opinion is that we aren't informed enough yet about what the new controller is capable of so to make a proper opinion isn't wise. However Smash Bros as a game seems more at home showboating the online capabilities of the revolution rather than the use of it's controller. No combos. The joy of the game has always come from the fact that being shit at it is never too much of a problem. You dont have to pause the game just to look at a damn long list of button presses or keep them stored in your head. Its the reason that the game is so level. One person can easily win with Samus but another might be crap. This has always been due to the characters' physical attributes like their weight or speed rather than the special moves they can pull off. I hate bowser for the reason hes way too slow but im sure some out there love him. Im sure there is more stuff but can't think of any right now. Love to see what people agree/disagree with and i know not all is possible but with the power of the Rev i can't possibly see how anything not being added could be down to CPU specs. Theres no excuse if theres too little arenas or not enough veriety in characters. (edited by NEONswift on 02-06-06 09:44 PM) |

Originally posted by Ran-chan +That disputable. Falco actually spends more time in the air than fox which is the way i use the character and most of Falco's aerial moves are superior to foxes in terms of speed. Falco runs slower than fox but makes up for that with his excellent smash attacks. When me (Falco) and my mate (Fox) played on the Great Fox arena i was always the first to pick up the items we were racing for despite our skill being near identical. There was always something graceful about pitting those two together. Ooh and another idea for an arena: The final battle on top of Ganon's tower in WW with all the water flooding in. |

for example: TOADSTOOL |

Originally posted by SionErr as far as i was aware the analogue stick extension to the remote controller is gonna be bundled with it for free. Considering its most likely gonna be a must for many games i can't see Nintendo charging extra for it. I imagine the same is true of the classic controller shell nintendo still havent revealed. My theory for the controller is that games where characters have to move will always be a anologue stick thing but when it comes to aiming itll be the wand. If they have games where you walk wagging the remote wand it'd be like trying to do the same with a PC Mouse. |

| Yeah been thinking the whole place needs a stickied Zelda 3 thread again. It lacks people hacking it and if any newbies come along wanting to know whats what they have to search the whole forum. Other subjects are often commented on alot but Zelda 3 and Hyrule Magic can go weeks before any mention of it appears. | |||

| Same thing happens to me all the time. Generally new series of games is a way to get back into it all. I got bored very early into the gamecube's life but thankfully i started Metroid games and began playing the Resident Evil series. Two series which have paid off no end with games like Metroid Prime and Resi 4 being released. But i also agree with Celice i wandered off from consoles for ages but im back playing them again.
Oddly enough i recon our attention spans as we get older when concerning video games actually decreases. Im looking forward to getting completely immersed into a game again. Something which has only really happened when playing Ocarina of time, Majoras Mask and Dues Ex. |

| copy the link graphics fresh from hyrule magic and paste as new image into photoshop/psp. The paste the altered link graphics into the unaltered new image you just made and then copy it back into hyrule magic.
Never tried it in photoshop but it works perfectly in Paint Shop Pro. As long as the dimensions and palette stay within the limits there shouldn't be a problem. A recommendation from me is to use YY-CHR which has relatively no issues with copy back and forth from photoshop or psp. --- EDIT: HAVENT A CLUE WHAT HAPPENED BUT THE TABLES ARE MUCKED --- (edited by NEONswift on 02-15-06 02:50 PM) (edited by NEONswift on 02-15-06 02:52 PM) |
