New Game + lvl 1 cap is a breeze compared to doing it from scratch. I killed Dullahan on that one by using INT up from Charlotte and then using my maxed out Shuriken skill. He went down in seconds. But yeah, I'm having trouble with the "from scratch" lvl 1 cap game...
edit: bah just used the same strategy on Dullahan except I had to consume a few tonics. I had actually had problems with Dullahan even on Normal Mode so hopefully the other bosses won't give me as much trouble. 128 HP is unkind. (edited by MathOnNapkins on 01-09-07 01:46 PM) |

This is a decent game... but I haven't touched it much since I bought it. See, I bought Portrait of Ruin the same day. I played FF III first and made decent progress. PoR has entertained me much more thoroughly. But this game is not bad per se. (edited by MathOnNapkins on 01-13-07 12:51 AM) |

Say what you want about mystic quest, but I had never played an RPG prior to playing FF Mystic Quest, and I found it quite charming. Yeah, FFIV (FFII at the time ) kicked my ass when I did get around to playing it but Mystic Quest had some things that no Final Fantasy has. It has puzzles you have to solve; and while most of them are easy, I can't think of an FF where you can actually move objects around on the screen or interact with them using items. You have a claw to climb walls with and the best claw allowed you to cross gaps. Axes allowed you to cut down trees and mushrooms to clear your path. And the sword triggered hidden switches.
And while to even a casual RPG player the game mechanics will seem ridiculously simplistic, it gave me a pretty good taste of how RPGs worked without making it overly difficult. It has a level system, magic, HP, and the basic status ailments like poison and stone are there. And there are even aspects of it that I find superior to "better" RPGs, one being that you can actually see your enemies. Random encounters annoy me to no end in RPGs... you can only do that so long before you get fed up and just want to explore. |

I haven't played it but I watched some friends play multi player online... and it was pretty boring to watch, I thought. People died within seconds, mostly to chainsaws. Where's the thrill of the hunt?

My point is that is not just how my friends were playing specifically, that's how people online in general seem to play. Why even bother playing like a sniper or a hunter when nobody else even tries to play sneaky? I've heard and seen a lot about the cover system but nobody seems to use it in multiplayer.
My only other complaint is that while it is graphically impressive, the colors are too drab overall and not varied enough. |

Your response has me scratching my head. Was it poor grammar or am I unable to interpret it?
Let me first say that you have this strange idea that it is the job of a university to turn the city that it is in into a utopia. Scholars most likely do not specialize in Urban Renewal. The closest thing you'll find to that in a university is probably something like Labor Studies. The University of Chicago is one of the top schools in the nation but it's practically in a slum. I attended a state school that was in a relatively nice area, but still had all kinds of problems anyway. Washington University has hundreds of beggars on the nearby strips, for example. It's not like the schools cause these problems themselves. In fact, they supply many many jobs to local residents. From janitorial to food service, to pretty much anything else a student would need, you can find a job in a service industry. And many schools are in larger cities that already have an established industrial sector if you want to work in that. If the students are gone for the summer in a smaller college town, everything slows down. So this is not a phenomenon strictly associated with elite schools. What I think of when I think of Berkeley is ultra smart students who are still kind of hippies at heart. I thought about trying to visit or attend Berkeley more than once, but I've never been there so I can't comment that much. One of my professors got his Doctorate there and he seemed like an honest, hardworking mathemetician. Not a genius by any means but humble and disciplined. So all I feel that what you are doing is introducing a stereotype, a poorly supported stereotype at best. Much like neotransotaku, I don't really understand what you mean by "leeching off the few who do carry intellect." What is this in reference to? In general, I think you need to support this argument more for it to fly, otherwise it just sounds like a rant. I could go on all day about how I don't like Notre Dame kids that much (mostly the spoiled, out-of-staters), but I do like Notre Dame the university as a whole. It provides us with tons of sports entertainment, jobs (my mother works there) and education (my dad graduated from there.) Any city has its problems and you can't expect a university to fix them all. That's why cities have these things called governments. |

Students may tend to be messy but there are plenty of people who are messy who are also not students. Keep in mind that professors like to live in nice neighborhoods or apartments. Just like any normal city you will have a mixture of the bad and the good. It's also up to the city to write and enforce city ordinances that keep students from trashing their neighborhoods. For example, one of my friends got cited for having couch outside that was not suitable for being outside. After being rained on a few times the thing looked and smelled terrible. So kudos to the gubmint of Bloomington, IN for sticking it to the students. One thing in particular that I think is bad is students leaving 20+ trashbags in or near their house. My cousin at his old house had probably 40 bags of garbage in his backyard at one point.

Then la di da I guess you're too smart for the SAT. My chief problem with the test was its time limit. I know I could have answered all the math questions fully if I had had more time, and would have gotten a better score, but I'm not the fastest worker (just very thorough). So the SAT is not just a measure of your basic intellect, but also how fast you work. *whine, complain*

I'm sure there is, but there's no need to make a thread about the fact that you don't know English. Learn English or be content PMing people here who do know German. Examples:
blackhole89 Surlent Pac ... that's all I can think of off the top of my head. If you want to introduce yourself you do it in the introductions thread |

You could always call the Jewish Anti-Defamation League and they'll drop in some commandos capable of launching full scale lawsuits or something. |

In the past month or so, I've noticed an odd change in my cpu fan's behavior. When starting up, it whirrs up to a fast speed (you can hear the pitch go up) and dips down. It goes up and down periodically, and by the time (Windows XP Pro) starts up, the fan is at a level speed again. I'm just wondering if I have need to be concerned, because although I have not seen behavior like this before, I haven't seen any other negative symptoms that would be cause for alarm. Could this be related to the heat sink's thermal compound? I replaced it about a month or two prior to this starting to happen.
For reference I have an Asus motherboard, an Athlon 3200XP+, 512 MB RAM DDR PC2900 ( I think), with 333 mhz front side bus. The case is made by Antec, which I bought at a Best Buy. Some sites I've been to looking for answers suggest perhaps that the fan is not receiving proper voltage at startup. Any help would be awesome, thanks. |

Wow.... just last week everyone was talking about Barbaro making this miraculous recovery. And then the docs take him out. It's like they built us up, just to let us down. Lame. Mark my words, the spirit of Barbaro will have his revenge! (edited by MathOnNapkins on 01-30-07 04:20 AM) |

Or would Denmark be a bad place for it to happen?
Lessee... the plane tickets I'm looking at to go from the US to Denmark range from $500 to $2500. So... bad for many of us. Not so bad for the Europeans I guess, they can probably use a train. edit: I wonder if it's possible to take a cheaper flight to say, Africa, and use combination of ferries and trains to get to Europe. Oy, I never realized this stuff was that expensive. (edited by MathOnNapkins on 01-31-07 02:58 AM) |

Take an unheadered ROM of Zelda 3 (aka LTTP)
Change $39 and $3A to 0xEAs. This NOPs out a Branch Always instruction. That's it. Now load up your game in an emulator. Press the L button to freeze the game. Music will continue running as will animations like water and flowers, but sprites and Link will be frozen on the screen. To advance by a frame, press the R button. To unfreeze the game, simply press L again. Only reason I never mentioned this was because I for some reason always thought the buttons it was checking were Select and Start (d'oh). Hope someone gains some amusement from this. |

Yeah, well I know I'll definitely find it useful for tracking variables from frame to frame instead of having to use debugging features to accomplish it.

There was the old stupid. This is the new stupid. So if I put a Lite Brite in a crowded bus station are people going to go ballistic? |
