Hello, my name is Ryan.

I don't have any for-certain interests (except semantics), and I like to learn about things I don't know much of.

I really wish I understood higher math better so I could understand physics better.

I was here before, years ago. It's useless information to tell anyone that, though. I don't even think I remember anyone, and I wasn't well known either. But I was here before.

The next five years of my life belong to the US Navy. That's probably the most useful piece of information about me.

My favorite word is "irony," and my second favorite word is interpenetration. I've a big peeve with me and typing errors. I won't point them out to others unless it's in context of the situation, but I always eventually notice mine, and become mortified. It's probably unhealthy to place so much emphasis on it. What's worse is I tend to make them often...

The playlist disections should be obvious for people who're familiar with the artists.

It goes indie, hip hop, core/punk, rock, and jazz/blues. I mostly listen to Indie in the afternoon and evening, and jazz/blues in the mornings and late evenings. I need more hip hop and rock though. Currently I'm torrenting Huey Lewis and the News.

Ogre: Do you listen to all the video game soundtrack on a regular basis?

Not to be a prick, and not to support a rapper who has been hacking off of his old self for years now, supporting himself with fans that have no better resource, but Eminem raps. It is rap, very rap. As rap as you get.

I used to listen to rapcore like hed p.e., and Mindless Self Indulgence, and I still really like Kid Rock's Devil Without a Cause, in just the same way I like old Green Day songs.

Being that you already have a Germanic language, I can think of three good reasons to take German:

1) You learn more about the grammatical system of English, greatly improving your primary language.

2) German is a popular language, and despite what some might think, is very smooth to speak, and relaxing to hear.

3) Another reason to take an "easier to learn" and "more intuitive language" is because it will stick with you longer. If you do become semi-fluent with it, there's a better chance for you to practice German than the other languages, and there's a better chance you'll overall remember it better. German is more anchored into English, and will be easier to recall.

Me being me, I'd pick german from that list quickly, probably mostly for the 1st reason. I love semantics.

Posted on 07-31-06 01:55 AM, in what sports are you involved with/play? Link
I used to play sports.

I was a wrestler for six years, then changed high schools and needed a different sport. I went into Vale Tudo, learning submission wrestling and boxing. I quit the season after three months. The stuff was too hardcore.

I went to Shotokan afterwards, mostly trained, no sport.

Later I went into full contact tournaments, and began learning Thai Boxing, and Vita Saana. I'm very grateful for that training, which was free. I won a lot of tournaments and was invited to a world martial arts tournament in my senior year of high school, but the entry fee was $200, and it was in Maryland, so I didn't attend. After high school I taught mixed martial arts in college for a year. I don't teach or train anymore though, but I'd love to get back into it, hopefully when I reach a permanent duty station (US Navy)...

No it's not. Rap in it's current form is more "gangster rap" than anything, like the crap by 50-cent and such. Ryhming to words a rap song does not make. Eminem is more like old school hip-hop, but not to say it all is. Sing With Me is in no way rap.

Rap is two parts of hip-hop: beat making and MCing. The term rap refers to this coupling. It's evolved a lot since the 70's, but the main idea, and all who fall under it, has not. Gangster rap isn't its "current form," it's a type of rap, a very popular type, but I think we might see it die down as some of the more intellectual underground rap starts to rise (So long as Jay-z keeps producing them, and Kanye West and all keep inviting them on big records). If Eminem wants to go in a different direction with his music, he can welcome himself to the club, but he's not leaving rap. He's just leaving what he's been doing with it.

WUT? MSI isn't fucking rapcore. It's a bit Acid, a bit Industrial, but rap? LAWL.

Upon looking at wikipedia, it seems you're right. I guess I don't know enough about rapcore to diagnose it. That's ok with me.

"What is this, that it is?"
"Captain! The Boson mates are rallying the seaman! We've terribly upset them this time!"
"What? Tell them to get back to work!"
"Captain, they're revolting! The Enginmen have abandoned their posts! Fires are rapid!"
"Fires, Ensign?!"
"Captain, the fermion fighters say they can't be bothered!"
"Christ, they're supposed to be free energy... ugh! We're sinking Ensign! Cling to me!"

Sorry about the esotericism. I'm in love with physics. I want to have its 11 dimensional children. *drool*

Oh man. I opened this thread, expecting a horrible review. I didn't know about this underground cult/ure at all. I just spent the last half hour looking this stuff up.

God I want to see this so bad. It is so up my alley.

Recently I was turned down. I suppose I saw it coming. Anyway, I'm curious if you people have ever been turned down, and how the other person turned you down.

I mean, in asking people to go out with you.

(Being turned down sucks)

It's an old NES game that came out. I played it for a few hours when I was young. I thought it was very strange. I want to find it and play it again, though, but I don't know what it's called. I hope you guys can help me based on what I remember.

-The game has to do with dragons, and dungeons, and magic.
-The main part of the game is overhead 2-d, but parts of the game, the battles, are done in first-person mode.
-If you left the game at the title screen, it would go into a demo, where the main character would be making his way down from the top of the screen through a zig-zagging landscape.
-The game to be seemed very sudden and absurd with its challenges. It was possible to walk into a perfectly good looking tile and die from it being a pit. The pits seemed almost random. Also, there were invisible monsters, it what I guess was the first level.

No, sorry that I don't.

I did look at some googled dragon warrior pictures on google. That's not it. The first level in this game starts in a dungeon. There's only one character too. And the graphics in this game I remember differently.

I hope one day I'll figure out what this mystery game is.

I've got two more I'd like your help from, guys. I'll just name this one for now:

NES game. It starts out as a 2D side-scroller. You're in some sort of jeep, some kind of vehicle that can jump, and I think shoot some blasters as well. In this first level, I'm not sure how long it lasts, but you eventually make your way into a lower area, and you're confronted by some sort of guardian robot or monster. You have to kill it by firing at it very rapidly. Then you get out of your vehicle and go in this door.

After in this door, the game changes to an overhead 2D game, the way the old zeldas were, but futuristic, and you have a blaster. Your character has a white helmet on as well.

That's all I can think of.

That's the one. Thanks Colin. You're like a hero and stuff.

In the NES game, you're a robo dinosaur or something. It's a side-scroller. I remember it being really hard, and you had upgrades, but I think you could lose them easily.

When I first decided to make this thread, I was thinking of just asking about positive consequences of your job, but negative consequences are interesting too, I think.

When you started your current job, aside from job perks, how did your job change you, the way you think, or what you know about the world? Did it give you a new perspective? Some new skills? Anything really cool?

Would you consider some of these things bad changes?

What about previous jobs you took.

Posted on 09-03-06 06:31 PM, in Fact websites? Link
What are some good 'fact websites,' places where a lot of information is stored, and also has a good reputation for the general accuracy of that reputation? I don't know that many, and I'm not sure about how much accuracy I'd give them. But here are some:

www.everything2.com -- Writer-like website. Compared sometimes to wikipedia, but contains a lot of prose. The website conducts itself in a strange manner, and considers itself a community. I suggest if one is interested in the website, they classify accuracy of information on the reputation of the writer who is giving it, and the overall specialties that writer displays. There are some very smart mathemetiains, scientists, and sometimes philosophers there, but there are pseudos. It might be more of a pleasure reading for people.
www.wikipedia.com -- I have no idea how accurate this place can be. Usually if I'm interested in the information, I'll browse alternate sources. It makes a good point of referance for the internet, though.
Erowid -- Drug website. Not always very accurate, but critiques itself on this, and encourages the reader to participate and research more.

...That's all I really know about. =/
