I think the attitude you've encountered is very much part of the same institutionalised attiude that women commonly face from men nowadays. I take that attitude with a pinch of salt from my friends (partially because they treat me as they've always known me)- but sometimes it still alarms me that they can say such things with me around. It's silly, silly things that they say but I can't help feeling that they trivialise these issues so easily.

I think instutionalised stereotyping, generalising and "humor" allows attitudes such as the one you faced, Taryn, to continue. At the same time, there are some annoying examples of women out there that constantly re-enforce the stereotype making it much harder for good people like yourself to make a point- an extremely important point that you've expressed well.

I think if groups of friends talked about these issues together, it would help the right message get through to people. That whenever you laugh at, insult or heckle (for lack of a better word- imagine a builder shouting "orlright luv? Show us yer nickers") a woman, you should consider that you are damaging your mother, your sister, your girlfriend, your wife. What would they have to say about your attitude?

I'd love to say that to some of the bastards I see around town these days- they should be ashamed.

I can't possibly explain exactly how trivialising issues such as rape can benefit a social group- but I think it occurs in other situations as well. Mental illness, depression, suicide, self-harm, sexuality, gender identity, disability, rape, feminism - all are treated with contempt, hate and ignorance on a regular basis in society.

From what I've seen mental illness and suicide are mocked openly, and often dismissed completely by people. It's quite appalling.

I fear it's a result of a pack mentality- disguard the weak in order that the strong might survive.

Not really, that's a stereotype. It's common, but not mandatory.

I've been thinking over starting a webcomic for a very long time, I've just never had the time or the skill to do it. I've had a few ideas, but because it took me so long to ink and colour drawings, I got bored before I finished a single drawing.
Now my skills have improved, I've been thinking about settings and characters, so I've set about some character and costume design.

This is character reflects me- I'd like a comic that did echo myself, my life and my friends in some way- except the character is an MMORPG avatar. I'm planning on setting the comic in an MMO, and picking up on the odd behaviour people exhibit in online games and how they choose to express themselves when not constrained by their natural looks.

My character would in real life be pretty much me, but her avatar is a more feminine interpretation of her- she would most probably be a priest. I'm not planning on using this quality drawinging in a comic, this is purely for character and costume design only.

I'm especially happy with this drawing, I feel I've come a long way in the year in terms of art. The shading in the hair is only the second time I've used the technique in a drawing. I've also spent more time inking and colouring the face than before. The original sketch also incorporates a few things I've learned when trying to accurately draw physiology. I'm personally not happy with the elbow and I'm still practicing my hands, but otherwise it's my best to date

I think that because I only drew one eye it screwed up my sense of perspective a little. I tried moving around the facial features, but with hiddeous results. Think Sloth from The Goonies XD

With things like these, I don't really mind as long as they can be corrected in Photoshop or improved upon in further sketches. Seeing as the eye is positioned as in my sketch, I've decided to leave it as it is and try to make sure it looks better in the future.

Yeah, that's the one thing I could've easily fixed with this drawing- everything else I'm aiming to improve upon in future drawings- like the hands- they take a long time to get right in every drawing :\

I think your hands are too broad, square and lack some shape in the vertical plane- I try to draw my hands as irregular diamonds tapering to the wrist and the fingertips, then filling in the details.

Your expressions are good though, you've got a grasp of a good range of emotions, specifically the classic Japanese looks

I'm planning to invest in a tablet and Painter if I get a job next year I'm still pretty much limited to Photoshop's path tool to ensure that my lines are all fairly straight for the lineart and the hair. Fabric I tend to do by hand using 100% opacity for the shadow and around 20% opacity when brushing in highlights.
The skin I do using 20% opacity all over.

What is really holding me back is the amount of detail I can put into shading the fabic- something that requires more precision than hair and skin because of folds and creases. Hopefully this is something that will become easier to do and less time-consuming with a tablet. This drawing alone took about 6-7 hours spread out across a whole day I think

Wow, your style reminds me a lot of the The Bitmap Brothers and their classic Speedball 2. I know pixel art is still alive and well, but doing it this well is good to see

Game of the Year: Twilight Princess - Wii

It's not got the atmosphere of Ocarina but it's the closest thing to it at the moment. Some of the dungeons have had some sublime innovations, as has come to be expected from Zelda games. Extra points for the classic pieces of Zelda music and references that can be found in the game.

Honourable Mentions:
Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan - DS
Phoenix Wright - DS

Disappointment of the Year: Shadow of the Colossus - PS2

I'd been waiting for this game ever since it was announced, and it was beautiful and stunning. However, the game for me was marred by a clumsy and irritating control system that made it even harder to scale a beast that was constantly trying to shake you off. If there was a fairer chance for the player to evade attempts to be shaken off by the beast then the game would've been much more playable, instead it is frustrating and you find yourself trying as hard as you can to love it. I put it down after a week and couldn't bring myself to forgive it.

Worst game of the year: Mark Ecko's Getting Up

This is a bad example of publishers assuming that because a brand is respected in one market, it will be respected in the gaming market. Ecko was also involved in the development of the game himself. When the game was critically panned by reviewers for a bad control system and lack of pollish, Ecko slammed the critics and accused platform limitations- [the PS2 has] "limitations that people just can’t understand"- and gamers for having a "predisposition to have a bug up their ass for anything urban".
Stick to your poncey clothing, because you clearly can't understand what makes a game great. You either, Atari-grammes.

Yep, people forget that snow generally has a low friction factor in the UK as well. I've seen a guy slam his BMW at 30mph into the back of a car that just had an accident. He got out of his car and started shouting at the car in front for being in front of his car when there was ice on the road. So, I guess what he means is that nobody else should be on the road so he can drive his BMW at 30mph in the snow.

What a complete fucking fruitloop. People honestly think buying expensive cars immortalises them in any weather condition.

No it doesnt

But HAL is a second-party developer, a seperate entity from Nintendo. It'd be similar to calling Metropolis Street Racer a Sega racer- it's not, but Bizarre Creations were also developing the game for Sega with access to Sega staff such as Richard Jaques.
Whatever affiliation HAL has with Nintendo, he's not in the same elite group as Metroid, Zelda, Donkey Kong and Mario.

My vote goes with Zelda, with a very close second to Metroid. Mario has definately fallen on harder times in the past few years since Mario 64, whereas Zelda and Metroid have gone from strength to strength.
