Makes for some interesting thinking...

The SNES lost a lot of the market that it won to a very strong Sega, though. Sega was a clear winner in Europe, a very significant market that matured a lot during the 16 Bit era. Sega also made big inroads in America, too.

Well, technically if there is enough mass in a certain area, a black hole is a certainty. Physics dictates that if you compress any amount of matter into a small enough volume you will create a black hole, you just have to use enough force. The natural force that creates black holes is gravity. I'm unsure how they've proven that a supermasive black hole exists in the centre of our galaxy, but it seems logical that there is a sufficient mass at the centre to capture the rest of the stars in the galaxy in it's gravitational field. With the amount of stars at the centre of our galaxy, it's reasonable to suggest that if there is a single object at the centre, it's mass is more than high enough to reach critical mass.

If our galaxy has existed for many millions of years, perhaps it's safe to assume that whatever body at the centre of our galaxy has also sustained an equilibrium for that time? I would guess that the supermassive black hole isn't feeling too hungry at this time.

Doesn't it have something to do with objects that for some reason have broken with a natural orbit in our galaxy, and have been drawn towards the centre? If they accelerate to the point of the speed of light and are flung out again in a highly eliptical orbit, then this suggests a single, super-dense object at the centre of our galaxy, instead of a large group of stars?

I guess that utterly disproves Star Trek V. Stupid Shatner.

What I'd take away from this thread is that if Google doesn't have the answer, Wikipedia doesn't have the answer, and we don't have the answer, then it's a fair bet that no-one does

Absolutely- that was a harsh thing to say, Adamant. And as far as I remember, the UK is part of Europe and has the largest market out of all the member nations...

Wikipedia puts the sales figures at approximately 50m SNES / 35m Megadrive. Nintendo clearly benefited more from the 16bit generation, but failed to effectively see off Sega and enjoy the success it had with the NES.

All I said was that it was relatively successful in Europe compared to the SNES

There aren't any solid sales figures available, but it is commonly said that the Megadrive was more successful in the European market than the SNES. To suggest your own logic to you, just because the Megadrive wasn't successful in your country, it doesn't make it a flop in Europe When I say Europe, I've clearly explained that I mean the European market. This is most highly concentrated in the UK, so a success in the UK is much more significant than a flop in Scandinavia.

And yes, the PC used to be an huge market for PC games, back when you could buy a game safe in the belief that you could take it home and it would actually work on your machine. We've also got a strong herritage with microcomputers as well- the Sinclair Spectrum and C64 did very well over here and paved the way for a successful Amiga and Atari ST.

On personal experience though, I only remember seeing Amiga games in shops, I've never actually seen an ST- even though their supporters constantly pelted the Digitiser letters pages with anti-Amiga slander

Global Warming is fact. That's clear. The world has warmed significantly in the past century.

For global warming to be natural, something must be releasing gasses into the atmosphere that intensifies the greenhouse effect. In the past, natural phenomena that altered the climate has included volcanoes, meteorites and thick polar icesheets from ice ages. What natural phenomena do you propose is causing global warming, because it's not any of the above...

There's to much ozone being emitted by our "insert whatever waste emmiting thing you want here" global cooling will kill us all!

Whoah, nelly- I said that global warming is a fact- whether synthetic or natural it is most certainly warmer on Planet Earth than two centuries ago. Pleading ignorance is not good enough- in another two centuries there will be dire consequences for the fragile ecosystems in the world. There will be grave losses of human life. You can't just say "there might be something we don't know about".
The fact is that we know that emissions into our atmosphere can affect the greenhouse effect. We know that the hole in the OZone layer has increased in size throughout the 20th century. We know that sea levels are rising and that we are seeing unprecedented examples of extreme weather. How do you explain these away? You can't.

As for nuclear power, it has much less emissions than gas and coal powerstations, and won't contribute nearly as much carbon as the world's fleet of cars. How do can you suggest that it is to blame if you simply don't know?

Having discovered the glamour girls of Ryu's Form Site, I've started looking around for more artistic depictions of the female body.

...So if I can be honest, I wanted some more inspiration for my own art and I honestly find art such as this to be quite enjoyable (I really do ). Of course, finding such art on the pr0n utopia that is the internet is nigh on impossible.

Recently, I started looking at some of the non fan-art sections of Deviant Art and I found some remarkable photos. Many of them are really intimate, artistic, enjoyable depictions of the human body, and not just the women either. It's quite different from the ego-centric, lustful norm you see in pornography, and I find it wonderful and elightening. For someone who's been ashamed of their body for nigh on a decade, it's almost liberating- to the point that I'm considering eating five pieces of fruit and veg a day, taking care of my body properly and participating myself. Really.

NSFW: Deviant Art's Nudity Artistic photography category

I've linked to the all-time most popular view of the category, so much of the photos you'll see will be tasteful- but be careful, some are right stinkers

Browsing by popularity removes some of the worst offenders - which is what I linked to and how I browse the content. Even though there are some blatent pornographic examples, there is a much higher fraction of tasteful content than can be found elsewhere on the internet.

I think taste is the key difference here- no exploitative poses, no pouting expressions and an overall more natural, artistic look.

Would you consider participating in photography like this? What do you makes the difference between art such as this and regular pornography?

Me and Chad are getting a Wii with Twilight Princess and Rayman between us on Friday- which is her birthday, so I guess it's a big joint present.

I've asked for a nice haircut for Christmas- one that's done properly to a classy style.

I'm probably going to get her lots of chocolate for Christmas because I'm very short on money. If I get some tax refunded, which I am expecting, I will probably get her an iPod Nano in red.

I'm still attempting the "Normal" setting for Ready! Steady! Go! on Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan. I don't think Elite Beat Agents is out in the UK yet, I might consider getting it if it's half as good as Ouendan

The game is quite simply what the DS was made for- a supremely engrossing game that is still just as playable for those two minute breaks that are hard to fill (with a game system, anyway ). The long intro to Ready! Steady! Go! is highly iritating when playing on harder settings, though. You frequently find yourself returning to the beginning and faced with a lengthly intro that cannot be skipped, which wastes a lot of time that could be spent playing. This is annoying when you're trying to fill just ten minutes of time- I find myself playing tracks I can easily complete instead. Ah well.

Posted on 12-07-06 06:25 AM, in Mysogyny Link
I have a very complex history with mysogyny- I hate it, I hate all forms of irrational hate. However- I know full damned well that there is a very strong, inate fear behind mysogyny- why?

I'm taking Taryn up on her offer for discussing this in this thread, and I believe I have a unique viewpoint to offer- I think I can speak from both sides of the arguement.

Back when I was in highschool, I'd been going out with Chad for about three years. Me and my friends had been studying for our final exams- considered absolutely critical for the rest of our lives. At the time, I was still going to school as a guy- I had been dealing with gender identity problems since I was 13 but I hadn't even talked to a doctor about it at that point. In my peer group there was me, two other guys and probably five other girls including Chad.
At the time (and probably still now), the biggest story in the news at the time of exams is that boys are failing much more than girls- that girls are much more better at learning, passing, working and work harder than boys.

I was terrified of failing. I was also terrified of failing when the rest of my peer group - mostly girls - would go on successfully. I was also terrified of failing to see Chad pass and go on to university - probably most of all. We had most of our classes together, and she also studied further maths, as she was in the top set, the best maths students in our year.
This would preoccupy me for my entire school life- to the point where I would just collapse and fail to complete mock exams properly because she'd ansered a question I could not. My own feelings completely crippled me.
Of course, we had many arguements as a result of this. When we had arguements, our friends would often become involved- and of course, I did not easily manage to find the favour of the girls. I was against my own friends in this situation and my own love- but made considerably worse because I knew that I was in this situation because I was something I was not. In my mind I knew I wasn't male, I had no reason to be afraid, I shouldn't have to study for my exams while I was probably mentally ill. At the same time, I think many young men and women don't understand what causes it, and often make mistakes when these feelings do come up.

I think mysogyny is bred from an inate fear in all of us- fear of being socially outcast or socially hadicapped. I admit mine was a nasty mix of my own problems, growing pains and my will to work with Chad and a large group of girls, but I can say I have felt probably the most poisonous level of mysogyny. I know it's real, I know it's more than irrational, even though the hatred is absurd.

I still have nightmares of arguements with my friends back then, most prominently with Chad. Having fights, failing school, and Chad having that social power over me. I wake up and I just feel like crying, I have no other recurring dreams that do this to me.
Fortunately these days, she's usually sleeping next to me and I can wake up and realise how silly these dreams are, and how far our lives have come since- and have a good hug and a sob. I'm also going to university now, and she's starting next year.

I think we're all capable of mysogyny- one of the most evil of feelings, the most evil of hatred. I think many young men are growing up not knowing what to do when they feel these feelings, and desperately need help in dealing with them. In hindsight, I needed help but I honestly felt that my own problems were insignificant and I couldn't complain. I know now that I should've, and mine and Chad's life could've turned out better for it.

If anybody feels the same way, please talk to somebody about it. If you don't grow above it, they will completely control you for the rest of your life.

This thread is absolutely suitable to discuss your own experiences, or not if you choose to. My own experiences are kind of influenced by gay / gender oriented problems, if anyone has any comments or questions I'd be happy to provide my knowledge

I would be quite interested to hear how feminist theory can interpret my own situation, though.
