Any time in the evening (EST) on a Sunday automatically rules me out. A Friday or a Saturday would be much better because I can stay into the wee Yank hours...

Ico. Just Ico. It's not a traditional platformer, but if you liked the puzzles from the original Tomb Raider, and you want a pure 3d platforming game, get Ico.

This is the problem. Gender and Sexual Orientation are FAR from boolean. They are highly complex , organic systems. They are governed by a combination of genetics and upbringing. If you're a software engineer, you'll know that if you get your model wrong, you'll end up with an inaccurate representation of the real world. You cannot simplify a complex human bahaviour as a boolean, it's short-sighted and shows a lack of understanding of gender and sexual orientation. Garbage in, garbage out, remember?
I myself feel attracted to male and female people indescriminately, and attracted to different things in either sex. I can be described as Male and Female by different criteria, and so have no solid point of reference when it comes to sexual orientation and gender. I am effectively in the middle, but prefering female. I am living proof that gender and sexual orientations outside absolute male and absolute female exists in nature. Care to fit me into a boolean pigeon-hole?

With 2 true/false values there are 4 possible outcomes. Of course it is possible for people to change their stance over time, but at any given moment all people would fit into one of the 4 catagories. I dont see how its possible not to fit into one of the 4 catagories. Someone give me an example of someone who does'nt. Its like asking someone what their sex is, either male, female, hermaphodite or eunoch, and then getting the reply "mammite-verion-tublu". The machine does not compute!

My point of keeping you guessing is that you simply don't know what my particular situation is without someone telling you, or talking to me directly. You have your labels for people yet you can't possibly label everything without finding out about it first.

So why do I object to being labeled as a boolean? Because you can't possibly sum me up before meeting me. You can't do that to anyone. Politics is the art of making decisions on other people's behalf. If you misrepresent people, you're making a political mistake. GLBT people insist on inclusion into society and law because they feel that it does not represent them, it's not all wishing for a rose-tinted world. Yet people continually accuse them of seeking more benefits than they're "allowed to have".

It's the same problem here, and elsewhere on the internet. People are arguing about things that they have little understanding of, and wondering why so many people are arguing against their opinion. You're entitled to your opinion, but you must expect opposition if your opinion contradicts existing studies in gender and people's own feelings.

Ziff's right. None of you correctly guessed my situation so it looks like you have to invent a three-state boolean, or add more information to your model. I have a feeling that you're going to need an awful lot more to correctly represent everyone, and don't complain when people fall outside your model. They don't do it on purpose just to spite you.

Kasumi, your desire to call yourself a female makes the job of classifying you much easier. You are bisexual. Period. I know you - or more likely, Ziff - will be terribly offended by that, even though there is no reason to be.

You're right, I am offended by people classifying me as what they see fit. Particularly if they disregard what I have to say about myself. I think you'll find that's common to everyone here.

You're labeled as a homophobe in this thread. But you insist you're not, and put try to rationalise with people in this thread. Do you see? This is the position I am in. If someone makes an arguement about something about me that I feel is incorrect, I feel that they should not be able to say that if I have something to say about it.

To disrupt your conclusion, I am not simply bisexual. I am attracted to women sexually and romantically. I am only attracted to men romantically (but only manifested as crushes so far). I am genetically male. I am also sexually male. However, I am female by gender and in common behaviour. I have breasts and wear women's clothing appropriate to my secondary sexual characteristics and gender. I am both neither, and both sexes. You can't possibly define me using two base-two variables, I am a living human being and I can think and speak for myself without the need for anyone else to explain what I am.

I used the guessing game analogy to convey how riduculous pigeon-holing is. People like labeling people, but 99% of the time they turn out to be wrong when they get to know each-other. You can use homosexual or bisexual to describe me, but neither one would be correct in entirety. Let me give you an example.

Legally in the UK, I can ammend my birth certificate to reflect my new gender after living as a woman for two full years. I would be legally a woman. Yet, if I married my girlfriend before I ammended my birth certificate, I would be legally required to null the marriage when I did get it ammeded. UK law will consider us as a same-sex relationship for which there is no marital law for.
Yet, if I didn't get my birth certificate ammended, we would legally be allowed to marry whenever I wanted. In this case, homosexuality is defined by an M or an F on a piece of paper. Silly, isn't it?

I'm not offended by this debate, in all honesty I enjoy talking about the subject. Most people walk away knowing a bit more about me, who I am and a little more about gender and sex. Some people come away with questions about themselves, and find out a little more about who they are. I got annoyed at the boolean arguement partially because I'm a software engineer, and I know how complex gender, sexual orientation and sex is. You can use a boolean expression as a survey, but it depends how much abstraction you are using to represent the model. If you want to fully simulate a model, you need far more attributes than two boolean data types.
Hell, we've only aquired enough supercomputing power to simulate a single celled lifeform, how much do you think it would take to faithfully simulate a human being?

My attitude towards this is mostly a bit of fun- saying a few things to stir things up and see what happens. It's a touchy subject but you'd honestly have to be pretty ignorant to offend me. And this is one of the more enlightened boards on the net (try the WoW forums back in February when the GLBT issue took flight).

So, you'd be accurate to call me female, homosexual and transgendered, but if you want to talk about gender and sex, it goes a whole lot deeper than that. Discussing gender is probably the only case that I ever bring this up, because in all other subjects the only label you may as well give me is female, because that's the only one that will probably matter.

Hi guys, how's it going?

(Yeah, I purposely posted in this forum to try to duck some of the craziness in General. I'm possibly going to post a bigger, more in-depth update tonight)

I'm nearing the end of my industrial placement now (like a paid internship) and just about to start my final year of university in Sheffield. I've been working for a year at a software company making intranet-based healthcare systems and doing all sorts of web development.
I've also been hard at work on a messageboard system I'm making for my final year project.

It's nice to see you left me with powerlevel 2, I have to appologise for being so busy this year... Congratulations to Taryn as well for being adminated

Oh, and a special thank you to the guy who vandalised my acmlmwiki article- nice to know people have actually taken the time to look at it and remember me

Nice person + Anonymity on the net = Total bastard.

Lack of conseqences of your opinions virtually renders people's inhibitions and superego useless, so they say exactly what they feel without being held back.

Wal-Mart? Requiring references?

Ahahahahahahahha!

Jesus, if it's anything like Asda it'd be a god-forsaken piece-of-shit anyway. Asda payed okay, but Christ they couldn't give two shits about the people that actually do all the work. They people that make the money. Wal-Mart is all about the management, shareholders and the customer. They're the ones who benefit from paying the employee fuck all for working their ass off.

I've never, ever met any more selfish, evil and backstabbing people than the management of Asda stores. It's the single worst place I've ever, ever worked at.

Trust me, you're missing nothing.

Fixed.

Maybe if you owned the original carts, but seriously, Nintendo isn't going to lower prices because of emulation. If anything, they've made positive steps towards stopping it. Not that I disapprove of emulation.

They're a fraction of the price they were before, so who's complaining?

If you don't like the price, don't say you won't buy. Of course you'll buy, who else is going to make Wiis?

Meh, since the SNES at least, d-pads have been eight point, not four-point, even if they're not circular. I can't think of any application of the non-circular d-pad that doesn't better the circular d-pad in any way, so it's circular d-pad for the win.

You've got the internet, and you asked a shop assistant?

Personally, I hope they do the two-tier dungeon system from Ocarina of Time and Link to the Past too. There's something undeniably Zelda-like about this arrangement.

I think what everyone, secretly, wants is a lightworld/darkworld... To see that working in glorious 3d would be mind-blowing :-)

Yeah, I follow Apple and Macintosh news to the day now. I ever read the live feeds of all the Stevenotes on Engadget :-P

Chad got herself a iMac G5 17" last year, and I've fallen in love with it.

January rolled around, and so did Macworld. I had my iMac Core Duo 20" delivered barely two weeks after Macworld!

So yeah, I love it to bits. The 24" is utterly gorgeous, the screen, the graphics hardware, the new Core 2 Duo cpu... So lovely...

The new iTV looks very nice as well.

Here's a desk shot:

Hurm, let's do an update in bullet points:

- Got addicted to WoW. Have two characters between 40 and 60, AND a full time job on the go as well. Go me.

- Got a flat in Sheffield with Chad. Good. Rent bad.

- Name is now legally Katie. Woo-hoo.

- Bought a DS Lite.

- Now a Macintosh user to replace the 1.4 Athlon I bought shortly after I arrived here. iMac Core Duo 20".

- Been working for a software company for a year, working on intranet-based healthcare applications. Working with ASP, VB, SQL Server and some Dell rack servers.

- Started working on my own messageboard system last year. PHP 5, MySQL and object-oriented. I'm continuing work on this as my final year project at university.

That's about it, not anything big to talk about, nice to be back though ;-) I've got a new camera-phone too, might have some photos to post up soon.
