For the record, n00b has never been synonymous to n0b/penis, it has _always_ meant noob/noobie/newcomer.
Second, you can stop beeing a noob, by actively searching out information instead of relying on others to inform you.

Now, for the real reason behind this post:

Though I am impressed by the work done by vl-tone, I wish there was some way we could all collaborate on this. I think we should form an open-source group to develop a good editor. Though the work done so far by vl-tone is amazing, I feel the community as a whole would benefit from the opportunities that open-source will bring.
I can program a little in java/c/c++/blah, however after thinking a little I think java would be a good language, primarily because it has reasonably high cross-platform compatability and because of the extensive framework we could build on ( gui, 3d +++ ).
To start things of I've already done a mio0 decoder/encoder(sadly no flexible encoding, perhaps a little later.
If there is interest I'll clean it up a little and throw up the source.

Though this may come off as somewhat deprecating towards vl-tone (i.e "stealing" his project) I truly do belive we would be better off if everyone could contribute, that way the burden would not just be on one man.

However, for now I'm looking forward to the first release, it will be exciting

I disagree with the whole "closed" open-source idea.
To adress your main points:
1. Credits, credits list would ofcourse grow, I don't really see the problem.
It would have to be made 100% clear that all work submitted would follow whatever license we choose(gpl?) and that if anyone wants to use any of the code/work it too would have to follow whatever the license states ( gnu basically says that all work can be used, but only if you make any "new" work from it gnu also )

2. Stealing would probably happen, under gnu it would be called a fork, a branch from the original project. Outright stealing is again ofcourse possible but as long as the main project remains alive it would probably always be the best.

3. Questions, in my opinion questions are great! There will always be noobs, and while you are correct in saying that it would bring more noobs, it would probably bring a lot of very good people too. We would ofcourse have main "developers" that have access to submitting code and such, that way we would filter out any unwanted crud. I don't think we should limit our resource-pool just because we're afraid of some noobs asking silly questions;P
Everyone is a noob at one time, and instead of turning away the newcomers, we could just point them in the direction of a programming tutorial.

Just to clear up one thing; I never meant this new project to be an open source version of Vl-tone's project at all, it would have to be completely independent.
If vl-tone wants to contribute that would be amazing, but we have to be self-sufficient.
Secondly, the license is not that important to me, gpl or not (just as long as there is one). The license/draft BGNG posted looks a lot like the lgpl.
I'm not sure why we'd want to allow commercial usage?

Now, some of you say why? "we already have an editor in the works"
The answer is imho obvious, though I have no doubt in vl-tone's skill it is pretty obvious that if we all pull together the end-result will be better, and progress will probaby be faster too.
In reading these forums, it seems there is a huuge amount of knowledge about game-hacking, but it's all pretty fragmented. It seems to me open-source has a _lot_ to offer.

I can only speak for myself, but I would really like to work on something like this, it combines fun and technical work that I enjoy. I tinkered a bit with the idea of trying to do an editor myself, but I came to realize that I'd just be duplicating vl-tone's work, probably always trailing behind.
Another reason to make an open-source editor is simply because if everyone has access to source, everyone can use the source and thus be able to make greather hacks!

Nice summary BGNG, I don't have much to add.
Though I'm not a very experienced rom-hacker, I know some x86 asm and java, I also know a fair bit c/c++ and some script-languages.( I'm currently getting a master(5yrs) in programming/computers )
I would very much like to participate in a community-project, and though I agree it will be hard to get a group of good developers, we only really need a few hardcore programmers. The whole point is having everyone contribute a little.
My suggestion for a game is still mario 64, primarily because I really enjoy it.
Hacking a more advanced game such as oot would be cool, but it would also require a lot more work to actually create anything playable.

No doubt there is a lot to consider when doing 3d development, but it seems to me that if we just made the code a little modular we could do some of the relatively easy stuff first. Also, I really don't see the point in actually making a true 3d modeller, we could just import models created in another program.
Trying to write a 3d modeller from scratch is a lot of work, and it's really not needed, there are lots of good and free programs that do that job pretty well already. An easy to use modeller that would be ideal for a low-poly games (such as all games for the n64) is http://www.wings3d.com/.
