spiroth10,

I wonder, Have you read Jonathan V. Last's "The Case for the Empire"?

Anyway, er, as for my beliefs. God (or some Unifying Force) exists. I also believe that if you join a religion, you sorta need to adhere to all its principles (and all things that its scripture says) or you're sorta really not part of that religion.

I am for life, though I am opposed to government-outlawed abortion, and against the death penalty except in cases where the evidence is solid and the person did something truly evil (like murder their spouse for insurance money or raped a kid then murdered them to cover it up) and against all but defensive war. I am opposed to any sort of sterilization (or other form of offspring limitation) or mass-slaughter by the government. Of course, I support people's right to defend themselves (and to use deadly force against deadly force used against them) and people's right to bear arms.

I am against all forms of censorship.

I think there is intelligent life out there.

As for cloning, I don't know. I don't know enough about it, but I'm not exactly willing to have a government supported by total diehards who will follow every last order without thought (like the clonetroopers--Order 66).

I'm opposed to compulsory education, as I think each child's case is separate, and I think that some kids are better off starting work at, say, age 12 or so then to be forced to go to a school they don't want to have anything to do with. I support the child liberation movement.

I like the concept of stem cell research, but I'd prefer it if they used something other than embryos. I like the concept of being able to grow new organs. Still, no-one can live forever and it's futile to try. Something will come up and kill you in the long run. As for after death, well, the user that's behind the mind and receives input from it and controls it will probably end up just going behind something else or something else entirely.

I think nature and nurture work together in the long run to produce results; it's never just one or the other.

Oh, and I do believe in being suspicious of the government.

spiroth10,

If you're to that point, terrorizing the populace is simply engaging in terrorism yourself; perhaps you should rethink your whole strategy at that point. If anything, a forced expulsion from the West Bank and the Gaza Strip of the Palestinians seems more humane than this.

Randy,

Yes, they test-fired 7 missiles, and the long-range missile they were touting, the Taepondong-2, failed in mid-air. It's pretty interesting. It's on the front page of Wikipedia.

Billiards Koopa,

That seems to be a pretty inflammatory comment out of nowhere. Please cool it down for this discussion.

Talk about a real twist of fate. Edith Delgado, an 18 year-old girl living in California, was drag-racing her friends and was trying to pass a red Ford Explorer, when she couldn't and she hit the Explorer, causing it to go sliding across several lanes before it tumbled on its roof, killing all inside.

Spoiler:
A chaffeur and 2 members of the Tongan Royal Family were inside the Explorer. None of them survived. Ms. Delgado, on the other hand was uninjured, but was jailed on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter and speed racing.

Here's the story.

I work at MCI (now Verizon Business) full time as a communications assistant/relay operator. I've been there for almost a year. It's for deaf people; a person using something like a teletext typewriter (TTY) can dial into the service and call someone who just speaks with their voice and listens with their ears on a telephone and I relay the messages in the conversation back and forth between the 2 users: I speak for the text user and type for the voice user. It can get boring after a while, and the service is often abused by pranksters and scammers (both groups suck), but it pays well, and it's decent for getting through college, so as XK says, it's "meh."

It depends. But if you go overboard with simplifying the spelling, it does become harder to read, because you often have to sit there and sound out the word trying to find what word you know that fits that pronunciation. English spelling is sort of like a semi-kanji system, the spelling of a word gives it its "look" in a way. Like the word though, it just has a certain look to it and we know to not pronounce the gh at the end. Like how kanji have their own look, you can sort of see a semi-kanji logic in English spelling. Here's something from Strunk and White on simplifying spellings:

He reads the form though automatically, without thought of its needless complexity; he reads the abbreviation tho and mentally supplies the missing letters, at the cost of a fraction of his attention. The writer has defeated his own purpose.

Shadic,

It's consistent in that it seems that every time he presses the space bar, it seems to produce, instead of the normal " ", this: " 5".

But there is one inconsistency, but I would imagine back space would be a good enough explanation without disproving everything else, but no matter: In Crayola's last post (36/36) there was one space that was not followed by a 5. If you look closely enough, you can see it:

5hack ,i 5was

Right before the ",i". But then again he could have just pressed backspace by accident, but it would have been a pain in the butt to press backspace every time I bet.

Since football (not soccer!) is a world sport that many in the world care about, it can be fit under "World Affairs/Debate" as it is a debate about something worldwide it fits at least 2/3 of that description. The thread stays.

Well, first you locate the data, then you make sure to find out the format of the images and then to use the data to find out how palettes are loaded, how it determines which image is loaded, etc., then you write a program that uses the data to find the locations for each image and corresponding palette, then you go to the location of each and construct the image based off that, using the image's format.

This thread seems like it would just be one long endless rant, because I'm not quite sure what you're talking about. If you're talking about scientology we already have a thread for that. I'm not sure why you listed the Sub-Genius people, as they're a parody.

Either way, this thread is bound to go down in flames and will be closed. If you can think of a more coherent point that doesn't already have a thread related to it, then by all means post it. But this is going in the trash *ahem* the Pit of Despair.

I think it should be mentioned that Congress can over-rule the Supreme Court in this area by getting a 66% (2/3rds) majority in both houses, allowing them to pass a Constitutional amendment, which is something the Courts cannot challenge.

And it's the President that appoints the Supreme Court members, so it's not just like we got some bums off the street and called them the Supreme Court.

Also, the President can pardon people who break these kinds of laws.

Of course, if neither group exercises their checks and balances, then yes, the Supreme Court is pretty much in control.
While this is true, remember how difficult it is to pass an amendment. Not only do both houses on congress have to approve, the PEOPLE have to approve it as well. The same people who can vote for anything they want and suffer no consequences because the vote is secret.

I thought it was after 2/3 of each house of Congress passed it, it goes to either the state legislatures or conventions appointed by each of the state legislatures and 3/4 of either of them must approve it. Also, there is another way for a constitutional amendment to be proposed to the states: A constitutional convention. If 2/3 of the state legislatures pass resolutions calling for a constitutional convention, then according to Article 5 of US Constitution, one must be called. The constitutional convention itself would have the power to propose amendments to the states and even theoretically have the power to propose a new constitution.
