Posted on 06-29-06 07:37 AM, in This board has changed a lot hasn't it? Link
I'm sorry, but none of the ideas presented in this thread have any chance of working. They either a) have been implemented in the past and utterly failed, or b) would take a huge amount of work to implement, and end up utterly failing anyway.

- N00bs will always exist.

- The more popular a game is, the more n00bs will exist. (why do you think Pokémon hacking is such a steaming cesspool of idiocy?)

- N00bs will always be annoying.

- You can ban all the n00bs you like, there will always be more waiting to step in and fill the empty space.

- N00bs will rarely read the information they're supposed to (and when they do, they will rarely understand it).

- N00bs will always exist. (reiterated for truth)

These are the cold, hard facts, and there really is nothing any of us can do to change them. They are the unfortunate side effects of having a popular public messageboard on the Internet. Until SMW hacking drops in popularity, or the board shifts to a private, invite-only system, all we can do is just...deal with it.

Probably because the other hacks have far fewer custom blocks than yours.

How many do you have, anyway? I suspect "a metric f*ckton" because the original game could show eight or more Koopas without slowdown...

Meh, I just stopped using Blocktool altogether in favor of my own table-based system. I have to use a hex editor to insert the blocks, but it's a small price to pay for virtually no CPU usage (aside from the blocks themselves, of course).

That looks like bad video RAM to me. I had an old SVGA card that did something similar when its RAM went bad.

Any chance you can borrow a video card from someone for testing purposes?

I don't think anyone's figured out how to scroll upwards yet (without the screen glitching, anyway).

Posted on 07-05-06 05:00 AM, in What to do when the BOSS calls at 7 AM? Link
My strategy (since 7AM is the friggin' middle of my night):

1. Get up, turn off ringer, go back to sleep.
2. Call back an hour or so after I get up, apologize for being away from/turning off my phone, fake interest in what they have to say.
3. (usually) Enjoy my hard-earned day off.

This strategy works wonders because it gives the caller time to find another solution to their problem (usually someone called in sick/didn't show up/blah), and also gives the impression that I care, since I did indeed call back (albeit belatedly). Just to mix things up and keep anyone from catching on to my little scheme, I will occasionally answer the first time it rings, though they usually don't need me to come in when I do that anyway.

Uh, $7FE00x is right in the middle of the current level layout (low bytes at $7EC800-$7EFFFF, high bytes at $7FC800-$7FFFFF), so yeah, it's gonna screw something sooner or later.

I recommend using $7EC100-$7EC7FF. It's completely unused, as far as I can tell.

I don't have an iPod, but I do have a portable CD player that can play MP3s, which is pretty nice. Storage capacity is obviously around 700MB per CD.

Somewhat disappointing. Fireworks are now banned at my grandparents' house, and pretty much everywhere else within driving distance.

How else am I supposed to fulfill my pyromaniacal tendencies?

The biggest problem I can think of is that the game uses this screen for loading purposes (i.e. it constructs the level in RAM, loads appropriate graphics, etc.). Therefore, it's probably not a good idea to use any background layers for the text during this time. You could definitely get away with using sprites (like the "MARIO START!" text), but you'd have to figure out a way to load an entire alphabet + punctuation into VRAM, and then convert the level name into sprites.
