The white ship in the intro and the spinning 'Toad symbols on the title screen are both scaled in RAM and then copied to VRAM. In fact, a lot of effects in the game (like the vertically-scrolling cavern walls) were achieved by manipulating graphics in RAM. On top of all that, nearly all the graphics are compressed, yet there's virtually no loading time between levels, or when new enemies appear in a level. Overall, it's a truly amazing (if horribly unbalanced and painfully difficult) game.

Uh...what? Tunnel? Can't see Mario? Where did you take that springboard...? |
You need to take the springboard to the right, along the clouds, until you get to an angled rock platform. Set the springboard down on the last cloud and bounce up onto the platform. Too easy.

Oh, are you in the cave? In that case, you need to take the springboard down BELOW the pipe. Grab the springboard, head back down the slopes, and swim through the passageway directly to the left of the black Piranha Plants. This will lead you to a platform with two blue Koopas, and an opening leading up to the pipe. Hopefully you can figure it out from here! |

Didn't someone recently discover that some files in Windows XP were made using an illegal copy of a program? Contained the cracking group's name and everything, IIRC... |

Isolated Warrior uses monochrome mode to make the screen flash when you shoot a boss.
|
As for the color de-emphasis bits, Super Spy Hunter enables all three when you pause the game, and The Immortal leaves them on all the time in order to darken the palette.

That font looks absolutely horrible, and the present looks really out of place with that grey outline. |

You can simplify your code a bit by eliminating the CMP and RTS operations at the beginning. Since the On/Off flag can only be 0 or 1, you can just use BNE/BEQ, like so: (On/Off Down/Up) AD 14 AF D0 1B AF 08 BD 7E ... (On/Off Up/Down) AD 14 AF F0 1B AF 08 BD 7E ... Also, in this case, you don't need to use BRA xx...a simple RTS is faster, and a whole byte shorter. 08 C2 20 xx xx 28 can also be replaced with C2 20 xx xx E2 20, if only to save a few CPU cycles (always a plus if your hack has a lot of custom blocks).

...and it works in SNES emulators! |
(Super System = SNES in an arcade cabinet, for those who don't know)
Since you can't save your game, a "Zone Select" was added, which allows you to start at the beginning of any world:
Aside from that, the game appears to be the same, though there are a lot of differences in the code. I've made an IPS patch that will convert a clean, headered SMW ROM into the NSS version. Help me find all the differences!

Uh, why can't we just post problems, questions, comments, etc. in this thread? |
[edit] 51MB uncompressed?! Are you mad?
I have a feeling a lot of people here won't even have enough RAM to open this thing. You seriously need to figure out a way to optimize it...or better yet, turn it into a universal format like HTML with GIF images. As it is now, ARRRGH NO. (edited by BMF54123 on 05-07-06 04:41 AM) (restricted) |

That has nothing to do with extended animation. You have to hack the sprites' ASM code, which requires lots of knowledge, patience, and skill. |
