The demanding tone you constantly take in your posts absolutely infuriates me. How about an occasional "please" or "thanks in advance?"

Also, there was no need to make a separate thread. We don't need "reminders." If nobody responded to your original post, it means nobody is capable of making said hacks, or (more likely) nobody wants to make them. We're not your friggin' slaves. We all have our own projects to work on first.

Okay, tonight has been...scary.

(warning: long-winded rambling ahead)

So I'm just sitting here, browsing the board on PC #1 (Win98) and burning some RAR backups to my external DVD burner on PC #2 (Win2000). I switch to #2 to hook up the burner and start Nero (I have a KVM switch). All is well so far, until I switch back to #1 and notice that it's frozen. Hard. Ctrl-Alt-Del does nothing, so I hit Reset, and...nothing. I power the computer completely off and back on, and it starts up again like nothing happened. Oooookay. So, I start up lololol again, and switch to #2 to check its progress. So far so good...Nero is verifying the files on the DVD. All of a sudden, the burner stops dead in its tracks...and the whole computer is frozen hard. Just like #1, Reset does nothing. At this point I'm seriously starting to panic. Two computers, connected by only a router and KVM switch, have completely locked up within minutes of each other...that can't be normal. Again, power off, restart as usual, and I notice that my DVD burner is no longer recognized as a drive, but a "USB Mass Storage Device USB Device". No amount of unplugging the power/USB cable or rebooting Windows fixes the problem. In full HOLY CRAP MY HARDWARE paranoia mode at this point, I boot into Windows 98 instead, and after a little cajoling, the drive comes up, but with a weird boxy USB icon instead of the usual CD-ROM icon. On a whim, I decided to run the drive's firmware updater, just in case it got trashed when #2 froze. The flash succeeds, I reboot into Win2000, and...I'm currently listening to an audio CD on the drive. Everything's back to normal again.

My question is: what the hell?

What bizarre event could have possibly happened that would cause two separate computers to freeze in the same manner within a few minutes of each other, AND render a DVD burner (on a separate circuit, no less) inoperable? I've ruled out both a power surge/drop (I use a battery backup unit) and a virus (full scan revealed nothing). Has anything this improbable ever happened to anyone else?

I'm almost afraid to leave my computers on tonight...

Bleh...maybe I was overreacting just a little last night, but it was still seriously weird. I haven't had a hard lockup that didn't respond to the Reset button in a long time, and yet it happened twice, at almost the same time, on two different OSes on two totally different computers.

The archives are fine, I checked them with my internal DVD drive. I figured they would be.

As for the USB problems...did you have to re-flash your iPod to get it working again?

This thread is for ExGFX requests. All I ask is that you follow these rules:

1. Check SMW Central before asking for graphics, as they might already exist.

2. Don't ask for the same thing over and over again. If nobody responds to your original request, then nobody is able to--or wants to--make your graphics. Pestering us isn't going to help your case.

3. If you don't even know how to use ExGFX, don't bother posting in here. This isn't a help thread.

That looks more like a chimney or a weird growth to me. It sticks out the side a little.

Well, I went ahead and made a new ExGFX request thread (before I even read this discussion ), so...yeah. I think all requests should be posted in there, to help keep the forum uncluttered. That was one of the biggest problems with the old forum, an overabundance of nearly identical threads that could've easily been combined into one.

From the ROM map thread on Lunar Utopia:

02639 - F0 - Change to 80 will fix a problem where the GFX for the paratroopers' wings are overwritten
- NOTE: This is intended to reload some of Mario's tiles after the "BONUS GAME" letters are loaded, since they occupy the same space. Disable at your own risk, especially if you've modified the bonus game to include other sprites or Mario poses...

So, yeah. "Fixing" this is not recommended.

Ugh, PC gamepads have really gone down the crapper in the last decade (even Gravis, maker of the legendary Gravis Gamepad, has been reduced to churning out shoddy blobs of Chinese plastic with mushy D-pads and bloated graphical "drivers"). The best USB gamepad I've ever bought is the Saitek P880 Dual Analog...it's sturdy, extremely responsive, and has a nice, solid directional pad (by far the most important part of a gamepad). I also have a PS2-to-USB converter, though I've found it has a slight but noticeable lag. I generally use that for PSX emulation, or as controller 2 in all other emulators.

As I recall, the P880 was only $20, which is a really friggin' good deal.

Pin*Bot changes the pattern tables partway down the screen. Try fiddling around with the "Display on scanline" box.

Adobe Reader has to be one of the most unstable pieces of trash ever written. It's not so bad in recent versions, but older ones (under the "Acrobat Reader" label) tended to lock up my browser almost every time I opened a PDF, or spew random errors if I scrolled too fast.

Related annoyance: files that are in PDF format, but really don't need to be (usually readme files and other documentation). I usually end up switching to my Athlon just to read PDFs because they're so infuriatingly slow on my K6-III.

I also despise Flash advertisements. Not only do they slow things to a crawl, they're also really, REALLY annoying, especially the ones that talk/make stupid sounds without even touching them. I remember one particular ad on mail.com that made a soft "click-click" sound, and it had me panicking for a few minutes because I thought it was a hard drive going bad! (The ad had a picture of a hand holding a prescription drug benefit card or something, and the hand would shake the card a couple of times every few seconds, making that "click-click" sound. Why the hell would a card make a CLICKING sound? )

!@#$%^&* arrrgh...

Congratulations, guys, you've tormented a 10-year-old autistic kid. Pat yourselves on the back.

Regardless of how bad his hack was, did you REALLY need to gang up on him and tear him to shreds like this?

If I EVER see a topic get this bad again, there are going to be some bannings. You can count on that.
