I had way too much fun porting music from Sonic 1 and Michael Jackson's Moonwalker to Gunstar Heroes. I also tried a bunch of Tweaker's and Sonic 65's open music ports. The end result was great. Then I decided to try breaking in my not-yet-released RGB to MD color rounder/converter by making a pallete hack too.

The end result? Super Gunstar Heroes!

Don't trust the screens!
What's cool is how it sounds. Try it yourself. That's the IPS patch. I included two patches so you can play weather you have a .BIN or a .SMD rom.

You might not believe it, Bit-Blade, but making the title close to the new game may have been intentional.

Chaotix has awesome music. Sonic 3 is an awesome game.

A match made in heaven. And all you nay-sayers (all? are there any?), music hacking is no small feat.

Thanks very much for the compliments guys. It inspires me to make "Snoic Advance 3 2: Mangrasp Orgy"
KIDDING!

Sorry for taking the fun out of it, Bit-Blade.

And I'm very sorry about the few songs that don't work perfectly, especially Smooth Criminal.

jman2050, are you using the emulator Kega Fusion? The checksum should be correct even after patched. Try turning on auto-fix checksum in your emulator. However I can assure you this hack works on Kega Fusion 3.2 or 2.4. If it still doesn't work, PM me and I'll hook you up with the hacked ROM, since you obviously already have the real ROM.
...might also be a bad IPS patcher. I hate IPS patching and would much rather distribute whole ROMs. Oh well.

I really wish someone had given ME this explanation when I first picked up ROM hacking. I started with pallete hacking SMB, of course.

"1F? That is not a number! Wait, perhaps in this hex-o-decimal, you can use any character on the keyboard!"
Well, maybe that didn't happen, but I'm sure this guide would have helped.

Maybe you should try

Using [img] tags

So we can see what

Your hack looks like

Without going through all

The trouble of copying

And pasting the link

Into our browser.

Also, what's up

With the weird spacing?

Your problems are odd. Perhaps you're not using the original ROM, or older versions of Kega. Oh well. I'll send PMs.

Using RAM to figure out stuff is fine. But of course you are going to do weird things to a game if you lock parts of the RAM. You might not believe it, but games need and use RAM for stuff. =P

Open up a song from Lumines in a hex editor.
Examples:
Shinin' = so_musicSHI2.dat
Shake Ya Body = so_musicSY.dat
I Hear the Music in My Soul = so_musicIH.dat

There ASCII value at $54 is the song's speed in beas per minute. This can have a decimal.
A couple lines down is the song's measure.

How to play:
Use UMD dumper to dump an ISO of your copy of Lumines... which you of course have.
Extract the ISO with winRAR.
Edit away.
Rebuild the ISO with UMDgen.
Slap it on your memory stick and boot with UMD emulator 0.8.

A bitch? Yes. Easier than music tweaking in NDS games? Very.
Of course, atrac3 (.at3) files in other PSP games can be a hell of a lot easier. I'm talking Puzzle Bobble or Wipeout with a fully custom soundtrack of whatever MP3s etc you have sitting around. But the ease can take the fun out of it.

Cracks, Trainers, and Translations are still very much a part of the piracy scenes. Don't forget that one of the first kinds of ROM hacking was cracking a game so that it was possible to play the ROM somehow.

I would scold the flaming/trolling, but after visiting that wiki I'd say yes, Data Crystal is pathetic.

A game doesn't have to be a ROM hack whore for me to touch it. (thinking in backwards order) Knuckles' Chaotix, Lumines, Sonic Rush, Gunstar Heroes, Dragon Ball Advance Adventure, Puzzle Bobble, and who can forget Sonic Advance 3? You guys can keep hacking Mario Bros. 3 which has been done quite a few times (however doesn't get old) or, you can be someone who respects more modern games and HAXORS away.

j/k, I ROM hack for fun, not for you guys. Do what you want and have a blast doing it.

Although this community isn't very big on the whole "modern" gaming thing. That's cool too.

If only there was some grand internet encyclopedia in wiki format that tried to cover all knowledge. But what the hell would they call it? A wiki-pedia?

Guess what? Data Crystal sucks.
Guess what? WikiRAM sucks.

Am I going to back up my claims with evidence? No.

This whole thing's a superiority battle about who owns ROM hacking. ROM hackers do. Stop pretending to be ROM hacking Jesus and giving people the world. Get over yourselfs and your communities kthx. If you really cared than the info from both sites would be merged, but you're making it a battle and the losers are everyone who signs up to your information repositories.

Act civilized or get the fuck out of this community.

No one ever said you have to be civil to be in this community. For example, you are allowed to use profanity, highly un-civil, and I'm fine with it.

I don't get the point of this hack. You're posting the thread to show of... it's spiffy new graphics? Recolors? ASM hacking? New level layout.
I see the new font and title screen, as well as the couple minor level tweaks, but there's no way someone would make a topic about that...

There are no character pairings in Sonic and Knuckles. =P
However Sonic 2 Delta 2 allows you to play as Knuckles with Tails following.
