If you can use the existing ground smash routine, then you could just slam a compare in the routine that handles Mario's moveset and have it do your custom code (animation, possible pause in midair before the smash), when down is pressed. After you handle the initialization, the JSR to that routine should handle it all.

That is, assuming the ground pound routine isn't TOO hardcoded. If it sets the original ground pound animation in the routine, then you'd have to switch a few instructions around or make a copy of the routine to work around it.

All and all, it shouldn't be called "Megahardcoding"... Maybe a challenge for a beginner such as yourself, though.

Good luck getting it working.

EDIT: Ahahaha, I said suck instead of such at first. <3 Irony.

If not, I've seen so many posts like this over the years it's not even funny. The chances of you finding anyone to do any of the things you're talking about are slim to none; if you had been working on this for a while yourself, and had made some decent progress and needed help doing some things beyond the scope of your abilities, you'd have a much better chance of finding people to do that.

Ideas alone aren't enough to produce a game, particularly a ROM hack. Something like what you're talking about would take so much work that it's not even funny (And yes, I've worked on some of the most extensive ROM hacks ever released for the NES); even if you do find people to do some work, expect them to vanish at the drop of the hat, etc.

Good luck, I guess.

He's already done work on it. Asking the community to combine thier talents and make this work isn't an unreasonable request; For one man to do this alone would be an unrealistic and astounding feat.

Uhm...

really, I'm doing something as big if not bigger than this, doing it alone isn't so far fetched.

Hmm, maybe I should've mentioned that I'm a lazy bastard who could never be arsed to take on this kind of load? =P

Help is definitely good, though. I hack for fun -- Not to stress myself out over huge workloads and deadlines and shit. Too much hassle, and it takes the fun out of hacking IMO.

Shit, I forgot about the whole no-ROM thing. Why the hell is that in effect anyway? Not like SEGA cares about ROMs you post -- fuck I've sent them ROMs MYSELF before and they didn't give two shits.

Well, I guess I'll take care of that when I get home, then. Until then, snag the full ROM, I guess. =P

Plus I forgot to post the moves. Here we go...

Moves, and controls to use them:

Homing Attack - B/C near an enemy/monitor after a jump
Light Dash - A near a set of rings (Sonic only)
Double Jump - B/C in air when no enemies/monitors are around (Shadow only - WIP)
Light Speed Attack - Hold A and do a homing attack near multiple enemies/monitors. 5 ring cost for each additional target after the first.
Spindash - ...you'd better know this one.

http://sonicresearch.org/ should have it.

What do you mean by other 16-bit Sega games? I think that's exactly what I did.

I'm working on a bugfix release that fixes some of the issues that were present in this rushed release. Be patient and when the time comes, I'll release it. It should be done soon.

What emulator are you using?

Also, please supply me with some screens of the life icon messing up, and what you did to make them mess up. I have not once made it fuck up THAT bad. If you're referring to how the Sonic life icon is there when you select the character from the options menu, then I already know -- I'm working on trying to figure out how to get it to load right, because it freezes the way I'm doing it now (which is why I left it out).

SLZ doesn't freeze for me at all, so I dunno what's up with that one.

Anyway, I'm working on the life icon thing now, but, as expected, it's giving me issues when I try and compile the ROM. Wonderful. =\

I'll figure it out though. Release shouldn't be too far off now.

Okay - Official new release ready!

Changes since the public beta:

- Double Jump fixed for Shadow; Jump Dash added for Sonic
- Issue of life icons not loading while starting a game from the options screen fixed -- you'll like the new system better. =P
- Zone layouts for Sunset Hill (GHZ) and Starry Night (SLZ) are complete. New layouts thanks to Robjoe1107.
- Music playlist modified (and that damn Splash Down port fixed =P)
- Various bugs fixed (Like the starting position in LZ3)

Any other issues, let me know. The Game Over screen should work now too -- dunno what caused that one...

Enjoy! Comments are appreciated. This is the last release I'm making in a while, so enjoy it. =P

What patcher are you using? Because, funnily enough, that's the ROM I used to make the patch. =P

:ooooooooo!

Big thanks to Cinossu (Hapi-San) for running this through to me. Maybe now you'll see even more edited animations in the future, in addition to this.

(and in case you were wondering, that IS the real move, not just a mappings edit or whatever)
