I not sure if there would be much complaining from same sex partners if every legal contract of marriage was renamed to civil union (I know for damn sure most heterosexual couples would flip a shit), but as long as there's a different contract legally for same sex couples and opposite sex couples then there will be a problem. |

| There are many differences in the circumstances. For one, I don't think pot should be illegal and if you smoke it you're not hurting others (well, no more than if you drink or smoke cigarettes). If you're doing what Foley was doing to those pages you are really screwing up people's lives. Stuff like that can really screw up a kid. Especially if Foley had been told to stop and didn't. I understand the loyalty of friends, but for me it stops when you're messing up other people's lives in such an agregious way as Foley was. | |||

| The article on the SATs shows that the College Board has failed at how they're grading. The grading of the SAT is a curved process where the highest percentiles get 800 and then it drops down. All I can say is a drop doesn't mean too much on the SATs, I took it twice, got the same score on english both times Improved from 710 to 800 on math by missing 2 questions the first time and 3 the second time. Yup, I missed one more but got 90 more points. So yeah, if everyone had a change of one question jumping their grade around that much a small drop isn't too concerning. The artile on people failing the jersey testing is a little more alarming. I do think that a lot of people are finding ways to get through school without learning, but I wouldn't blame the people at the top, those people usually know a lot about school subjects, but people that are a little bit below the top could fall into that category. I have my issues with how grading is done, but I don't know what other way there is to provide colleges with a guideline for who to accept to their schools. It would be nice if everyone had an advisor that could just evaluate the student, but I know at my school each advisor was responsible for 800 students and I only saw her twice, once to give her my college applications so she could fill out the administrative sections and a second to tell her where I was going to school. If schools had more funding then there would be a way to have enough advisors to actuall follow the achievements of the student and accurately judge their ability in school and possibly use that to have more weight on college applications so fewer would just find the method to get the highest GPA at the cost of learning. | |||

To me, those people are even bigger morons than Jack (which is quite impressive considering where he measures up on that meter). And I strongly doubt that rockstar hired him but if they did that shows increadible foresight because it would mean that they planted him years before they even became large enough to produce a game that could stir up controversy. It would mean that they told him to just go on the attack of all things holy in the eyes of the first amendment and after about half a decade (or however long he's been at it) they'd release a game that they'd want him to target. Genious advertising if it was their plan. |

| The difference between martyrdom and suicide is that a martyr does not want to die. A martyr wants to continue living so that they can continue their mission of preaching whatever they believe in but is not willing to compromise on that belief even if it means that someone will kill them. People who commit suicide choose to kill themselves. There are some people who desire more to be martyrs than to preach their message and their actions purposefully put them in situations where there is a greater chance of them being killed. I would say that is very close to suicide as opposed to someone who goes about preaching their message without seeking persecuters to kill them. | |||

| Oh God, the BCS is out, and the computers are rife with pure garbage yet again. Let's just take a look at where the computer puts people (there are five computer rankings, 25 the highest, 1 the lowest)
OSU - 23, 25, 23, 23, 23 USC - 25, 24, 25, 25, 25 Mich - 24, 23, 24, 24, 24 From this it appears the BCS got Michigan pretty much dead on, and gave USC OSU's rankings. I mean, come on, is there anyone out there that would even say USC is number one in any way shape or form. I always think it's funny how the standings get worked out with the BCS because they seem to be based on totaly irrelevant stats as opposed to actual quality of the teams. I'm not saying I want Mich to be ranked higher, no, not at all, but I also hate USC so I don't like seeing them being given anything beyond what they deserve. Basically, we need to go back to the good old days where there were two polls and that was it, but I do think that coaches that don't watch other games should give their vote to writers and sportscasters who do watch the games. |

Sometimes stores will increase or decrease (more often decrease) prices within 10% of MSRP to move more units or capitalize on demand, but if a store moves much beyond that range then they are liable to lose a gross amount of consumers in that market. Back on topic, if you really don't want the DS games, and you're okay with letting him sell those games for $120 (if that's really what you can sell used DS games for, I really have no idea) then I'd say do it. I gave one of my brothers friends 8 N64 games that I hadn't played in two years and didn't intend on playing to get RE Directors Cut, RE2 Dual Shock and RE Nemesis. This was like 6 years ago but I felt it was definately worth it because I'm a huge fan of RE and didn't care for the other games. If you really want the system and don't want the games then go for it. |

| Sports writers might not be able to predict who would go where at the begining of the season but still, they do watch most of the games and have a lot more perspective on all the games going on in the nation than coaches, or even ADs. It's just something I think should be done, but I don't really think the coaches poll is that off.
My point about USC is that they aren't playing well, they are in a weaker conference (I hate having to admit that the PAC-10 isn't as good, but who would ever disagree that Mich is in a harder conference) And they barely beat Washington. The BCS doesn't matter now, that was a good point, it only maters at the end of the season, but I will say that USC will not be 2nd by the end of the season, USC will lose to ND, Cal, or Oregon before the season ends, and probably to more than one, maybe even all three, it's not that out of the question. Also, ND still has a chance of getting up there if we win out and a few more teams lose, it's not out of the question yet, but we will have to have more impressive wins if we want it. |

| I do think that there would still be morals without theism. There are certain things that people just know by rational reasons that are morally right or wrong. Stealing from someone is wrong, killing someone is wrong, most of these are based on the do unto others as you would have done unto you, which doesn't necesitate religious background to understand. Though I'm a religious person I don't think that atheism is a bad thing. Atheism can be reached quite readily through logic and I've yet to see a compellingly strong arguement for the existance of God so it's not illogical to be atheist. If someone is atheist because they don't think about life and what caused us to be then that's not so good, especially if they are attacking religious views, because there is a lack of effort on their part to evaluate the situation. Atheists who challenge religion after thinking about the posibilities of a God doesn't upset me because I at least know they have thought about it. | |||

| Theism doesn't necesitate religion. It often leads to it, but it doesn't need it. Theism is the belief that there is a god (or gods, not positive about the plural) that has created the universe and everything in it. Many of the objections I've heard from atheists towards religion are most often based on the short comings on the religion of churches (and I'll be the first to admit that there are many involved in Christian churches who do not uphold the values of the beliefs of that faith). They point to the extravagant decorations in churches, misused money, child abuse, and many of the other problems of religion, and my only defense of my beliefs to these statements is that what the church does is not what I believe. There are a lot of things that the Catholic Church supports, like service to others, tithe, etc. that I am a staunch supporter of but then there are other aspects, the alienation and stigmatization of homosexuals being one of them, that I strongly oppose. Anyways, in an attempt to make a more relevant statement, I think theists and atheists both have good support for their beliefs but neither of them can fully disprove the other, and I for me I fall into the theist side of belief no matter how often I'm told that it might be a fasle hope, because I find hope much better than the alternative. | |||

| I would think that if you came to the conclusion that there was no reward at the end of life you would just end up living your life as you wanted to without regards to certain morals. I think that most people wouldn't just go around hurting people, but they probably wouldn't have the same strict morality that some religions prescribe. If you think about it, can you think of where you were before you were born? I'm gonna go out on a limb and say NOPE. If that doesn't make you despair (and I don't really think it should) then there's nothing about there being nothing after death that should cause you to despair about life. | |||

| Nope. I have each drive labeled for it's purposes (F: for windows (assigned when installed), G: for games, M: for music, P: for pictures, S: for storage (empty, I consolidated all my folders onto one HD and just formated the other one to S: but it's empty right now, waiting for a purpose in life) T: for temp, W: for work/websites) and not a single one of those has a folder (or even a file) named stuff (my downloads and attachments go into F:\attachments and F:\downloads). I do have temp folders in just about every drive for things I'm not quite ready to sort into folders. As for my desktop, pristine would be the best word to describe it until the end of summer. I used to keep it without anything on it. There was not a single icon on my desktop and that's the way I like it. I had every application that I couldn't get to through the run prompt in a quick launch (about 9) and when I wanted to go to a folder I just typed it into run (or just keyboard windows button, 'M' for my computer and then start looking). But at the end of summer I changed it up and now it looks like this here. [1080x1024 jpg, kinda large]
My Mac doesn't really have much of a self made folder system, I just let the system put things where it wants because I don't use it for too much other than photos and school work. That might have a stuff folder, not sure. |

| To add on to what Silver Shield said, Theism doesn't contradit evolution at all. As far as I know from my education as an engineer in science and other things, we don't really have a good concrete idea for how the universe began. We have our theories, like the big bang, and others but none of those have been proven, they just have varying degrees of possibility that no scientist should be willing to accept as absolute fact (or even probably fact, at most I'd say plausible). What we do have a pretty good grasp on is evolution, I think it's correct and think that those who claim it to be false are just denying the facts (I actually know a girl who is a genius chemical biologists and she doesn't think the facts supporting evolution are strong enough, just baffling considering her science background). Moving on to how this relates to God, let me pose you this question. What's more impressive, a god that says, hey guys look, I made the earth and people just poof, out of nothing, or a god who creates a situation which through billions of years evolves slowly and eventually leads to the set of circumstances that we are in now. This is how I view Catholic creation stories in harmony with science. And the bible is not to be taken literaly, any inteligent person would know this and if one studies the bible and faiths based on it they would be doing a great disservice to their faith by taking it as fact.
And by my previous statement about neither side being able to disprove the other, talk to any philosopher who studies proofs for/against the existance of a god. Anyone worth their wieght in philosophy will say that there is no arguement that can prove with 100% certainty that the other is wrong, they come close, but not all the way. This is why some say that even atheists have faith, faith that God doesn't exist, because there is no absolute proof to assure them of the non-existance of God. I will admit that there probably is a greater necessity for faith for Theists as oppossed to Atheists. As the good Albert Einstein put it in two seperate ways, "Science without religion is lame, religion without science is blind." "My religion consists of a humble admiration of the illimitable superior spirit who reveals himself in the slight details we are able to perceive with our frail and feeble mind." And I stick by it. edit: Just tacked on some quotes. (edited by Young Guru on 10-18-06 05:17 PM) |

| Anybody hear Donna Shalala(President of Miami University) on Mike and Mike on ESPN radio / podcasts. I think that the penalties given to those in the fight were definitely not given harsh enough punishment. One game (and against Duke, a bad high school team could beat Duke, sorry Duke people, but you know it's true) isn't really a penalty for the team or the players. I think most of them should be suspended for the rest of the season (some might say that's too harsh, but one game is definitely not enough). Anyways, Shalala said the penalties were good enough, but said that there was no difference between stomping on someone and hitting with fists. And to top it all off, she didn't even look at the tape because she was too upset about the situation and didn't want to rewatch the fight. Best bit on ESPN.com was someone appologizing to the players of Miami of the late 80's early 90's for comparing the current team to them, though they might be similarly thuggish, at least the old teams used to win. | |||

| People that accept Pascal's Wager and believe in a higher being just in case it doesn't mean that they will worship that god. As far as I know the purpose of the wager is to cause the person to live a moral life, that's what the cost of the wager is. It says nothing about worshiping a diety, just that the diety wants you to live a moral life.
JDavis, I do think that many people are capable of acting morally without the necessity of religion or believing in God but I also see a lot of people in the world who don't know how to act morally. I like to believe in the general moral goodness of all humans, but from what I see from those who can leverage power over others there seems to be very little human decensy at all. Ahh, I'm so jaded and I hate that. |

Originally posted by Crayola Very good point, this is why people who take the bible at face value are severly handicapped in their faith, in my opinion. Being Catholic I've heard a lot of bible verses and there all good and well, but what I've gleaned from 21 years of Catholic teaching is this one idea that Jesus preached constantly, Love your fellow man with all your heart. Sure, there are parts of the bible that can be interpretted to say that homosexuality is wrong, there are parts that can be interpreted that women should be subserviant to man (interesting aside, two main arguements using the bible for why women should be subserviant to man (1) that men were created first and (2) that a wife must obey her husband show that the people fail to read the bible because (1) is just plain false and (2) fails to continue the rest of the verse saying that all things done by the husband should be out of love and respect for his wife) but those things are only mentioned once or twice, but love is preached constantly. This is what I don't get, people who claim to be religious conservatives are constantly attacking abortion but they don't attack the death penalty, war, and violence used in other forms of government. Why don't people that constantly bring out the bible to support their views actually read it and put some actual thought into their reading. Sorry, I got on a rant, back on topic, yes the bible is not a good source to use fully in forming your morals but it does have some interesting and valueable sections that could improve anyone's moral perspective.
