Question, can a pci card work in a pci-e mother board. I need to get a NIC because my onboard lan got snapped during shipping and I can't find a pci-e NIC at best buy and want to know if a pci NIC will work in the slot. Thanks.

Thanks for the help, there's no PCI slots open on it (ABIT AG8), I'll think about the USB, maybe I can try to fix the onboard LAN, could be a fun little experiment in how good I am with hardware and test my worth as a EE.

When I bought my computer i tried to cut some costs everywhere, a few dollars here, some more there, had to keep it under a certain price so that insurance would pay for the whole thing. I ended up with this mobo (I now realize I probably should have gotten something else). Anyways, I've got a PCI-e graphics card, a PCI sound card, and a PCI wireless card, so I might end up just scrapping (putting it in a box and saving it for later) the wireless card for a network card because right now our school's wireless is not so hot and they've been getting on my ass for hooking up my own router to the network connection in my room. Anyways, looking back at the mobo I'm realizing that my initial request was totally pointless, my desktop is currently in a storage unit 2200 miles away and I remembered it was PCI-e so I figured that I'd probably have a free pci-e slot, but now that I've thought about it there aren't any free pci-e slots, so I'll just say it right now, I'm a dumbass for not thinking before I posted. Anyways, thanks for the help, now I've gotta get out to bestbuy before my coupons expire.

God, that just makes this bowl season one of the worst ever. First my team loses in a disgraceful outing, then Meyer wins, I can't stand that guy, he's such a whiner it's just terrible. Anyways, not hatin on florida, just the coach of the team, but that was one ugly game, an ugly that can't be explained by two month breaks or injured speed demons, just ugly.

No offense, but Boise had no reason whatsoever to be ranked number one. Yeah, they played great and they definitely proved that they can roll with the big boys, but they won their game in a close overtime match. Florida beat Ohio State 41-14 but the game was even worse than that when you look at the stats. USC beat Michigan handily. So in my opinion those two deserve the top two spots. I really don't see how Ohio State didn't take more of drop. Anyways, not taking away from Boise State, just pointing out that their victory, while one hell of a game, was not nearly as convincing for a number 1 rank as others.

Posted on 01-10-07 02:41 AM, in collision detection Link
Two years ago we did a collision detection program and the easiest way we found to implement it was to make a distance function that calculated the distance between two objects. If your objects are spherical it's really simple, call the distance function between every object and compare it to the sum of the two radii of the objects. If the distance is less than the combined radii then there's a collision. If they aren't spherical you'll probably need to do a distance and orientation function to determine what amount of distance is acceptable. Trying to keep track of every cartesian point that every object is occupying is much more tiresome than using a simple distance / orientation system. If you don't want to do an orientation system then you could break every object down into approximations of spheres (not sure how well that would work, but in theory it would get you close to the shape of any object).

Tom Brady, he steps up big in every game he plays. He also managed to get to the playoffs with a rag tag team of recievers where usually a qb has one go to guy, brady's been working with a whole collection of guys and only recently has one of them really stepped up into the dominant reciever. That, and he's 11-1 in playoff games.

Yeah, Ginn wouldn't have won the game for them, but he is the biggest offensive threat on Ohio State, and probably the only one on the team that could out run Florida. But that really doesn't fix the problem because Ohio States O-line was getting beaten by a four man D-line by Florida. If you're front line can't keep 4 people from getting to the qb every single play you're never going to win. I don't really put much of this on Troy Smith, people say he's going to drop in the NFL because this game proved he couldn't compete with the speed that will be present in the NFL. Well, aside from Vic, and maybe Young, there's no one in the NFL that could handle speed like that when the O-line is basically letting them come in unimpeded. The O-line is why Ohio State lost, plain and simple. Okay, maybe it's not just the O-line, it's also Florida's D-line, they were huge in this game, and allowed them to essentially set up 7 men in coverage, which is the reason that Ohio State couldn't get anyone open. Plain and simple, Florida is fast, but that game came down to one team being outcoached by the other and one team having more desire to win.

More like 7 of the last 8, or something along those lines. Lienart was the first heisman winner to win the Championship in a while.

I've glanced at it over at apple.com and it looks quite nice, but my only issue with having my phone and ipod in the same device is that my phone will have no battery power after I've been listening to music for an entire plane flight. It still looks very nice and maybe quite useful strictly as a phone but I'll be keeping my ipod mini for the long haul.

I think apple's going to have a hard time getting these moved. It's a very nice improvement on a blackberry, but honestly, the majority, large majority, of cell phone users don't have any need for those features and most people don't want to spend $499 on a cell phone. If I had to own a blackberry style phone then this would be what I would get, it's implementation of internet, email, music, contacts, etc. are all very impressive but honestly, I need a phone to make calls and to store people's phone numbers and to text message on occasion, I've barely used the internet on my phone (occassionally to find store locations).

Tanks, you must be living in the wrong place because I love my cingular account, works great in the Bay Area and Northern Indiana/Chicago. But I feel your pain, when I had cingular I think I could make phone calls from one location at my school and nowhere within 10 miles of my home.

Anybody seen the 5 degrees of BSU being the champions, it's impressive.

BSU over OSU (42-14) ==> OSU over USC (33-31) ==> USC over Ark (50-14) ==> Ark over Aub (27-10) ==> Aub over Fla (27-17)
Boise should definitely be ranked at least 3rd (I still hold that USC and FLA are better, but then, how do you rank this, if you do who would win then I'd have BSU at 3 but if you do by record then BSU is 1) I definitely don't see how the coaches determined their rankings, but it's obvious they don't want BSU being too highly ranked because it obviously scares the big schools. Though this is a tough consolation prize, Boise gets to take rights to one of the greatest games in football history, that game was great to watch.

And here comes the obligatory lawsuit over the name. I was pretty surprised at the naming of the phone because I had heard that iPhone had already be trademarked and there's pretty much no way that Apple Inc. (a new tv setbox, a new phone, and a new name) didn't know about the previous copyright so there's probably some loophole that they've already prepared for this court case.

I find the examples for each ranking increadibly interesting. Sports Illustrated requires a higher degree of education than Newsweek, and people say that athletes are just meat heads. And the universal taxes requires a PhD to understand, too bad quite a large percent of people needing to understand that have nowhere near that level of education.

Posted on 01-12-07 10:34 AM, in The paradox of the Berkeley-esque college Link
I wouldn't say it's some place for rich kids to go to, because if you really want to prove how much your wealth is worth you'd be going to a private school where one or more of the buildings are named after your family. Berkeley, while not the cheapest school in the world, is by comparison much cheaper to go to than Stanford, Harvard, Princeton, etc., especially if you live in California. I do agree that it is full of charlatans and showoffs, I feel like it must be said that the majority of people, in the lines of the great Steven Tyller, "just fake it til they make it." Look at government (and I'm not talking about Bush, I'm talking about just about everyone in government claiming to have knowledge and expertise in fields they know next to nothing about), look at enron, look at american auto companies, many succesful people really aren't amazingly intelligent, they're just good at faking it. For example, one of the guys in my dorm graduated high school 5th in his class of about 300. Now that he's in college he tries to pull the same bs he pulled in high school and he's pulling a nice 2.0 yet he still thinks that he's going to be making 100,000 out of college with mediocre grades in accounting. Alas, some people just can't hack it. Bah, this is getting all discombobulated so I'm done.

considering that allofmp3 is back up in russia I'll say yes. The reason that it wasn't able to be shut down was because they were working within Russian laws. Now, they might not last long because the US is trying to coerce Russia into changing their copyright laws which would therefore make allofmp3 illegal in Russia. But as long as the websites find places that don't have copyright laws then they will be able to work there, they just won't be able to ever enter the US without a horde of lawyers trying to prosecute them. But hey, if you're making millions do you really need to go to the US.

Well, they can remain independant as long as they don't want any trade with other nations and as long as no other nation does a strong armed take over of it. The thing is, if Sealand pisses people off then most countries wouldn't object to someone just going in and telling them to knock it off whereas if it was a well established nation there would be some uproar to it.

After spending a semester in London I've grown to love the celar temperature ales that they serve. My favorite by far is Caffrey's, then John Smith's. I like them because they're really creamy and a relatively dark ale. Most of my class mates hated the celar temperature beers because they preffered cold beers but I really liked it. If I'm back in the states I get New Castle Brown Ale and MGD.

You two definitely need to see the first seasons. If you think Jack is the man now just go back and watch seasons 1-3 (I still haven't seen four yet). Anlong the same lines of people being the man, I'd have to say that George Mason, Tony Almeida, and Arron Pierce all fall into line as being the man, and Chloe is definitely the Woman, if that works the same way.
