No, people gainig money does not negate the plausibility, but it appears that Hubbard founded Scientology just so he could make money off of it.

Your statement that Jesus was considered crazy could very possibly be true, but he wasn't considered crazy because what he did was detrimental to others, it was because he preached such a radical form of self-giving that people might have thought him to be nuts. Hubbard is more crazy in the sense that he shelled a island off the west coast of North America under the assumption that it was uninhabited and belonged to the USA where in actually it was inhabited and property of Mexico.

"Scientology's disconnection policy, in which members are encouraged to cut off all contact with friends or family members critical of the Church."~This seems very detrimental to a religion. Basically it's saying, we can't defend ourselves against our detractors so we'll just shut ourselves off from them. Most religions encourage their members to go out and discuss their faith with others (usually in the hope that their accounts of their own faith will bring converts to that faith).

"The Church indoctrinates its members, providing very little initial knowledge of the inner secrets of the organization. In order to reach this knowledge parishioners are required to advance forward in rank through study and payments to the Church, the incentive of which is the stepped acquisition of promised powerful secrets and gaining of supernatural abilities."

"Numerous differing, and sometimes conflicting, accounts of L. Ron Hubbard's life, in particular accounts of Hubbard discussing his intent to start a religion for profit, and of his service in the military."

I haven't had the chance to read through the site you posted, but it appears that you're saying that Christianity in medieval europe had such dominance that all other art forms were dismissed. This is not a fault to christinaty, it is just a description of the time. I'll take a more critical offense of people attributing the characteristics of the time to create a situation that just isn't true. Many (I'm not sure on what percentage) Christians will tell you that the Jews killed Jesus. While strictly speaking, this is true, everyone in Jerusalem at that time was either a Jew or a Pagan. So yeah, the Jews killed Jesus, who was himself a Jew, as were all his disciples, his mother, his father, and a whole bunch of other people. Just because the times predicates that the Jews killed Jesus doesn't bring any fault to Jewish people now. It's just ludicris, which is what I seem to be drawing from your conclusions about medieval artwork.

Also, the doctrine of the Catholic Church (the original Christianty, from which other protestant sects have broken off, but let's not get into that discussion of which sect is more correct, not relevant to the arguement) has absolutely no doctrine against discussing religious faith with others. In fact, I would say it encourages Catholics to embrace others who are not of their faith and to discuss it with them. Honestly, how strong is your faith if you cannot defend it against other's complaints and questions about it.

Moving on to the need for money in the Christian faith. You said earlier it is the teachings of the faith and not the people who run it that determine the validity of the faith. So take money in the Christian faith, Jesus never preached about hoarding money, he always preached about helping others. If you have two coats share it with one who has none, if you have food share it with those who have none. Basically, if you look at his teachings, it was pure communism. But Jesus never said anything about how if you don't pay for religious services you won't make it to the Kingdom of God, just flat out never. He preached love and that's what was required for eternal life. Moving onto Scientology, the founder of the religion does not advocate donations, he demands it. It's in his writings (and he even said, many times, that if a man wants to become a millionaire, start a religion). This would be akin to Jesus making statements like that (which he did not).

Another thing, L. Ron Hubbard created Scientology to be a religion. His intent of the whole thing was to create a religion. If you look at the teachings of Jesus, he never came to earth to create a religion, that was not his intent, his intent was to show people how to live. Jesus says that with his coming is the end of the Law (i.e. the old jewish scripture and 10 commandments and beatitudes). Basically, what this means is that with his coming he is presenting to the people a way to eternal life that was not possible before and that what he preaches has more authority than the commandments (see, he doesn't say that the commandments are bad, just that what he brings is from a higher authority, the highest authority).

So yes, Christianity does rake in a ton of money, but as you said earlier, if you look at the teachings of the scripture there is nothing in there saying that giving money is necessary, just love, pure and simple. Now scientology does require money, it's in their books, it's not just somebody manipulating the writings they use to construe it that way. So don't hold Catholicism to a standard that you won't hold Scientology to (namely that people altering Christian teachings becomes part of Christian Doctrine whereas actual doctrine of Scientology is just people mistreating the writings).

And finally, emcee has a good point, this is faith, there is no proof for faith, only attempts at justifing it. I do think that with an analytical comb one can find more truth in Christianity (even Judaism, Islam, Budhism, Taosim, etc) than can be found in Scientology (which, given by its name and what I've read about them, holds proof through scientific fact as essential). Did you know that Scientologists claim the universe to be nearly twice as old as has been concluded by physicists (to within 1% error). How does scientology justify this grand error between the two when they hold scientific fact and analysis so highly. That's quite an exquist self contradiction going on there.

I thought having 6 small meals as opposed to 3 large ones kept your metabolism working all day therefore helping in weight LOSS? I'm not positive so if you're right, good advice, as well as starting off slowly on the weights, don't want to hurt anything.

Yes, it is crazy to blame jewish people for the death of jesus which is why I used that as an example. But to be historically correct, there were a good amount of jewish people responsible for his death, but that is simply due to the fact that the area that he was in was highly populated by jewish people.

Here's the espn article with video.

Okay, so if you don't know, the Nuggets and Knicks got into a little scuffle the other day (saturday). Now, I'm all for a player sticking up for his teammates when someone gets a cheap shot but come on, that foul was barely anything that needed to be thought about. Yeah, it was flagrant, or more so, intential, but only a flagrant 1, not a flagrant 2. I think that if the Knicks really wanted to turn some heads then he would've waited for his man to get off the ground before tossing him down. I guess it's just me, but I've seen people take cheaper shots and not have anything happen to them. And what is up with Melo, the whole thing's calmed down and he just sucker punches that guy, what an idiot. Lemme know what y'all think, was that foul really anything to get worked up over?

And to clarify, we're not voting on whether or not the foul was a flagrant, because it was, he didn't go for the ball, but whether or not that foul was so bad that a fight should've even passed through their minds.

AP courses, they were nice, but I only took them so my college apps would look better. I much prefered my regular english teacher who actually taught us something interesting than my AP teachers who just taught us how to do well on the test. There's something to be said for a more intensive learning environment that can be present in AP courses but if the teacher is only going to teach to the test then it's lacking a little bit in my opinion.

I've had this happen to me once. The thing you need to do is not try to make a big scene in front of the entire class. Teacher's having their authority challenged in front of their students will get very defensive and offended. What I did was go in after class was over and talk to him about it. I was in the same situation as you, straight As and I was very offended that he accused me of cheating. I told him that, and he seemed to understand. But yeah, being accused of cheating is a big deal and not something that you should just roll over to. In a much more serious situation, my friend got accused of plagerizing on one of his final papers by his TA in a philosophy course. He didn't plagerize but the TA had told the professor about it and the three of them got together and talked about it. Regrettfully for my friend, the teacher had a little too much faith in his TA but decided that he wouldn't fail him but instead gave him a C- (in the course, he still failed him on the paper), a huge hit from the A- he was pulling going into the final. My friend still hasn't forgiven that TA.

Dr_Death I hear where you're coming from saying that it never SHOULD happen. The thing is, coming from the mindset of a basketball player (and I played in some of the gulliest gyms) I still can't see why that fight started. Maybe a little jawing at eachother, but nothing more. And Stern and the NBA are going to come down hard on these guys, cause hell, that's what the dictator does.

Just wait till you get to college, there's really no comparison between AP work load and college work load (i.e. college >> ap). I know, your teachers might tell you it's like a college course (I know my AP US history teacher used to say that all the time) but it just isn't true, the two don't compare. Especially AP sciences, when you've got one or two AP sciences it's kinda fun, maybe an hour or two of work a night, but when youv'e got 5 techincal courses with 3 labs and 30 hours of work a week then come and tell me your AP is the same as college.

wow, sorry if that sounds harsh, I'm a little out of it, a couple of late nights doing finals work and papers will do that to you. And I'm not bashing taking AP courses, I know I did, and a whole lot of em, and they were mostly fun, but looking back on it, some of the teachers definitely taught to the test and not the material, which is why my honors physics class learned more than the ap physics, because our teacher was just physics obsessed and wanted to teach us everything, which would've hurt the ap people because they would've learned a lot of stuff that would just distract them on the test.

As arwon has said, this is breaking into two different debates (and it's mostly focused on the is holocaust denial hatespeach). I'm going to comment on the first idea, should hatespeach be illegal? To put it simply, no. I'm very keen on the 1st ammendment and the rights that it allows the people of the US to freely and openly express their opinoins (whatever they may be) without fear of being persecuted (by the government) for those words. The only reason that hatespeach would be outlawed is based on fear (or people wanting to take away first ammendment rights slowly by using something everyone can agree on and slowly moving to more controversial things). I know that holocaust denial is a very strong anti-semetic movement and could very likely cause violence to spring up because of it, but the fact is, that violence is a maybe, not a definite (this is why yelling fire in a theatre is against the law, because people will trample others to get away from the fire). As to the fact that holocaust denial hurts people who had family members involve in the holocaust all I can say is, well, that sucks, but at least you have the fact that the majority of people realize that those holocaust denials are total bullshit. All I'm saying is, just because you don't agree with the statement doesn't mean it should be outlawed. The ammendments weren't created for those who are in the majority but those that are in the minority, because the majority only needs protection from its only stupidity while the minoriity needs protection from everyone.

Ok, you want to talk about letting athletes just be men and not little babies, look at the NFL and the way quarterbacks are treated. If I were a qb I'd be pissed at the way the game's been changed to make my possition seem like the weak spot. Anyways, moving on to the things you've brought up.

Ron Artest - Have you ever actually been next to an NBA athlete, those guys are enormous. Yeah, they guy throwing the beer at him was a complete dick, but if you're getting paid millions you need to be able to control yourself. Also, one solid punch from an NBA player could very well kill a man. And the punishment was due to his past offenses and the Commish not wanting to lose fans. Think of this, if you're a father and you want to take your kids to see a game and you're worried about one of the players coming into the stands and potentially hurting you're child you might not go, and that costs everyone in the NBA so Stern had to make some examples of players.

Carmello Anthony - Carmello deserves that fine because he's a little bitch. That hit was a completely uncalled for and unprovoked attack on another player. And what does he do afterwards, he runs away. He's not getting fined for begining a complete gutless ass, but he should be. And that whole fight was a joke, that foul was nothing more than an intentional foul, nothing to spark a fight, and it just shows how much those players can't deal with real basketball. If the Knicks player wanted to make a statement he would've let the other player get off the ground and really teach him a lesson for showing them up on their home court.

Miami FIU - That was a disaster, the two teams got a little heated up in a the game, but they aren't rival teams. Hell they shouldn't even be playing eachother. FIU is in no way shape or form on the level with miami. And donna shalealla is a joke of a president at Miami. She thinks here punishements were severe, suspending players against Duke, another joke of a team, where FIU suspended it's players for a season. Donna was the laughing stock of the entire sports world for the way she presented herself in regards to that event. And the players on the teams were in general just in a fight, but there were a handful of cowardly boys (yes, boys, not men) who were going around trying to stomp on people's knees and heads. That's not fighting, that's just cowardly and disgracefull and those players should get their scholarships revoked. I can forgive plain fighting, but trying to injure/kill someone is not acceptable and shouldn't be in sports, period.

I grew up in California and I know people that have gone directly from HS to a UC and others that have done HS to CC to UC. In general, the people that have gone directly to UC from HS have enjoyed their college experience a lot more. There's a lot of growing that goes on when you move away from home and start at college. Those that went to CC had to be really self-motivated to keep their course work up but they eventually transfered to UCs. I don't know about transfering in a single year from a CC, everyone I know did two years at CC and then two at UC. Anyways, if you can find a way to go the full four years at UC I think it'll be the better course of action. The thing is though, that opinion might only matter for the next 5-10 years and after that whether you did a 2 and 2 or just 4 years at UC might not really matter to you at all. Just out of curiousity, which UC are you thinking about?

Outback Bowl, Jan. 1st - Tennessee vs. Penn State
Penn State - What the hell, it'll be a good game and I don't really have good feelings for the SEC (though it's always one hell of a party when the Tennessee people come up for games).

Cotton Bowl, Jan. 1st - Auburn vs. Nebraska
Nebraska - SEC ain't gettin' no love from me.

Gator Bowl, Jan. 1st - West Virginia vs. Georgia Tech
West Virginia - I like their chances in this game, should be a really good game.

Capital One Bowl, Jan. 1st - Arkansas vs. Wisconsin
Wisconsin - Part of me feels the SEC just isn't that tough of a conference this season (and that's a large part of me)

Rose Bowl, Jan. 1st - USC vs. Michigan
Michigan - Michigan had one loss, and it was a close lost to Ohio State. USC lost to Oregon State and UCLA, no thank you.

Fiesta Bowl, Jan. 1st - Boise State vs. Oklahoma
Boise State - Oklahoma could use Peterson in this game.

Orange Bowl, Jan. 2nd - Louisville vs. Wake Forest
Wake Forest - It could happen, probably won't, but it could.

Sugar Bowl, Jan. 3rd - Notre Dame vs. LSU
ND - I think we all saw that comming. And I think if we can get our offense going right then we'll beat them.

BCS Championship, Jan. 8th - Florida vs. Ohio State
Ohio State - Simply put, best team in the nation this year. Everyone's talking about if Ohio State will be able to keep up with Florida, I think it's more like will Florida be able to keep up with Ginn and Gonzales. Can't wait to see Urban Meyer get thoroughly trashed so he can take his whinning ass back to his nothing conference (wow, that was harsh, but more often than not the truth is).

And on a pre-new years bowl thread, Cal beat A&M, that's always good to see.

There you have it, can't really put it much better. Just because the SECs good teams lost games does not mean everyone in the SEC is really good, it just means that the best teams are closer in ability to the middle and lower teams. Yeah, the Big 10 is lopsided, but you won't find two better teams in the nation outside of Ohio State and Michigan. Not USC, not Florida, not even ND (that hurts to say but it's the truth). And Alabama needs to stop firing coaches every three years when the senior class graduates, face it, you're not the dynasty you once were.

How's that possible, that's gotta be against the law or something. No Michigan fan roots for Ohio State, just like no Cal fan routes for Stanford. That's why the Rose Bowl was hard, I didn't want either team to win, but it was an interesting game to watch. Now hopefully I can see some more SEC defeats coming up. Good bowl season so far.

What a kick ass game. The best thing was, boise didn't win by running trick plays the entire game, they were up in their faces, physical, and played one helluva game. Major props to them for putting up big for the WAC. It's going to be hard for any other bowl game to top that.
