To be honest, I think it's kinda cute. Not something I would consider a permanent thing, but funny enough until a lot of peeps start posting again.

Posted on 12-02-05 03:27 PM, in PHP String Question Link
Is there a standard PHP function that will evaluate a string as a math function. What I mean, in case I wasn't clear, is this. Say you have "2+3" stored in a string. Is there a function you can run that string through that will return 5?

As always, thanks for the help.

Note: While I am willing (and able) to write the necessary functions myself if necessary, I'd much prefer not to if I can avoid it.

Edit: No rush now, I did manage to write my own basic math simplifier. It follows the same basic steps a human would (PEMDAS, left to right ordering). I love regular expressions.

Posted on 12-03-05 01:06 AM, in JAMH: A Refresher Course [SS] Link
I figure it's been a while since I've shown any progress on JAMH (that's Just Another Mario Hack for everyone who's new to the area). So here's some status shots of the current work to date, and little descriptions for each. Keep in mind that every graphic you see is custom designed from scratch or editted from the originals. No rips for me.

First off, the title screen. You can see that I've obviously changed the demo (who doesn't these days, right?), plus the title graphics. Also, if you're observant, you can see that the font was also changed. Not too many people touch the font (yet), but it's something that can add some style to your hack.

Here you can see some lollipops I drew. They've come a long way from the old crappy monotone ones with the bright white sticks I drew up so long ago. I think they're fairly perfect at this point (or at least I'm not going to edit them). Also you can see my custom background.

The chocolate interior set can be seen here. I find it useful for bonus areas (it just has that tone) and also for another level you'll see later. The background here is also custom drawn by me.

The dreaded Candy Warehouse. Here Bowser is storing candy for some nefarious reason (to be honest, I haven't exactly thought one up yet). Unlike the other sets, this one is drawn from a perspective to give the place a unique depth. The boxes seen here have since been improved, but I haven't taken a screenshot yet.

Iggy's (New) Castle. This time his lair is made entirely out of candy, just like the rest of the land. The fences are, obviously, climbable for you and the koopas. Note the custom background. Oh, one thing I forgot to mention earlier is that I editted all the sprites I've used so far to give them a newer feel. I've eliminated most interior lines and drawn black outlines onto all of them. This fits the newer Mario style better, I think. Mario is no exception from this.

My personal favorite tileset. The Heart Palace is the new replacement for the Yellow Swith Palace. Each of the Palace's has a card suit replacement, with poker chips (custom animated!) instead of coins. Hazards are, of course, in abundance.

The in-progress Cake set. I've still yet to complete the finishing touches on this one, but I think it's been rounding out nicely over the last couple months. Each level is perfectly customizable in terms of frosting and cake type. This makes for some nice diversity in the same vein as the original SMW.

And finally, the Candycane Maze. This level and tileset are reminiscent of that one stage in World 7 of SMB3 (I can't recall the exact number) where you gotta find your way through that pipe maze. Tons of dead ends, one way paths, and invsibile coin blocks make this level a headache, but hopefully you enjoy the ambience on the way.

Well, that about sums up the work I've completed on JAMH... or at least the stuff I've shown publicly so far. I've been meaning to put out a new demo to show off the newest stuff, but I'm not sure you guys would like to play the same basic game as my last demo with updated tilesets only. Maybe Ice Man and I will have some more levels done sometime soon. Questions, comments, and concerns are always welcomed. I don't do this work exclusively for myself, after all.

Glad to see one of my custom sets getting some use (finally). Don't forget I have other custom work in the Workshop that'd look good alongside that set, seeing as how all my graphics tend to be the same flat shaded style.

btw, how long did this thing take?

Originally posted by GGS Cruel Justice
I've looked at the screens again and might I make a slight suggestion for the background? To add more depth, perhaps you could adjust the brightness to add the illusion of shadow/fog to the levels?

Don't worry, I don't plan to include any Oompa-Loompas... yet. Also, I've been working on JAMH off and on for about 3 years now. I'd show some before and after shots... but most of them have been consigned to the Recycle Bin. I'll have to test that background idea out and see if it works.

Looks excellent. It'd be awful nice if you posted some pixel-exact screenshots at some point, because I personally tend to dislike filters like hq?x when it comes to screenshots (although sometimes they can look good in motion).
Sure, I can do that next time I post screenshots. I personally prefer taking screenshots without filters, but long ago everyone kept bugging me to do it WITH the filters that I finally gave in. I agree with the second part, it's gotten to the point where I will not play unless I have some filter running. I'm just used to it, I guess.

Good to see you're still working on this. How far have you gotten along with it level-wise? Also, are you still incorparating the darker world elements from before, I remember the oil field levels and all that from previous updates, but I don't know if you're still going for that whole idea.
The general consensus around the time I announced my plans for the whole "darker world" thing was that the idea was totally cliche and it sucked. I still have plans for a similiar "Whoops, looks like things aren't so cheery after all" plot turn somewhere down the line in the hack, but it won't be nearly as drastic as all that. About level progress.... well, I'm still working on the cake sets, which I want moderately finished before I start heavy level design.

"Just Another Mario Hack" doesn't find to this hack at all. It's THE Mario Hack for me. I never liked Custom GFXs,because it doesn't really fit, but you remodeled the sprites to make it fit. That's great!
Will the whole game be candy-like or is it just the first world?
The name originally started as a joke to poke fun at everyone who was taking their hack titles way more seriously than the actual hack. Now it's sorta like an ironic moniker. The whole world will not be candy themed, the second world has a cake theme. I'm not certain where to go from there just yet, but we'll see.

About time you showed some more screenshots of this. This is one of the hacks I am really looking foward to. Keep up the good work!

Oh, and I am one of the ones who did touch the font, but it turned out lousy. And yet I kept it.
Yeah, my font ain't perfect, but I prefer it to the original. It's not too terribly difficult to change the font, really, the only hard part is tracking down all those wayward tiles for the title screen. Yeesh. Nintendo didn't do a good job organizing some of their graphics.

Not to me it's not.

I hope to play a demo soon.
Unfortunately, the only demo is the one posted a couple posts ago by andres. And it's super outdated at this point. What do you guys think, should I re-release the demo with all the changes I've made since then? Keep in mind, I wouldn't be releasing any new levels.

It looks amazing! I like it when someone can actually design their own graphics instead of ripping them. Looks Great!
I hope to set a good example, really. I'm not an artist by any means, JAMH is mainly hard work and perserverance. Want proof? Try to find some of my old old screenshots and you'll see what I mean.

These are THE single most best graphics I've ever seen. Just another Mario hack?
If that was true, all the other ones would be extremely good.
Mainly my graphics look so good because barely anyone has made a serious attempt at a complete custom graphics overhaul for SMW. And even I am leaving some things alone.

I don't care much for the eagle-esque rendering filter you used on the screenshots. But, the rest looks good.

Next time consider posting unfiltered screenshots so we can actually see what the graphics look like.
Should I just ditch the filters for screenshots entirely? I typically use HQ2X to take screenshots, mainly because there is no blurring effect. All it does, from what I understand, is smooth the borders between colors. Look at the stripes on the candycanes, for instance.

Those look absolutely fantabulously spectaculationous awesomely good! I love the title screen to death, it looks great! There are no problems with the screenshots, as they are sweet (great, now I'm saying it )

I'd still like a demo........
Hmm, everyone wants a demo. I'll see what I can do, maybe. Not enough people put serious work into editting the title screen, I think. Mine is actually not THAT great, I plan to revamp it at a later time. I had plans once to make the opening demo a sorta prelude into the story, we'll see how that goes once I work out more of the story details.

The hack looks really awesome. You've been working real hard creating this; and so, your hard work shows. Great job!
Yeah, exactly. This isn't something I threw together in a month, like some less noteworthy hacks. I've been working on it on and off for a couple years now. Granted, it's more off than on, but still, that's a lot of time to devote to a hack.

Nice graphics.A demo, by any chance?
We'll see. If enough people are fine with a demo that's basically the same gameplay as the last demo, I'll release one.

I'll get to the rest later, oy. This is a lot of typing for lil 'ol JJ.

I think maybe I should get around to releasing all those frugging sets I've been working on.

The Graveyard, Lego, Almost-Futuristic, and one more I'm forgetting sets are just begging to be released. Maybe I should, ya know, repost some screenshots so everyone who forgot what the sets look like can have a gander.

Edit: Maybe I'll make them a Christmas gift... only in June like my last "Christmas" gift.

I think this is looking to be a fairly interesting hack. There's no obvious problems that I can see... besides the fact that some of the graphics are maybe just a little different than what I've come to identify as the typical Mario style. This isn't a bad thing if the transition is pulled off well. I'm particularly entranced by the Title Screen. Not enough people put a lot of effort into the title screen.

The next step after the graphics is making sure that it's not impossible to play (this is NOT a specific criticism!) because I just love putting hacks on my Xbox and playing them with an actual controller on an actual TV. It's great fun.

Move that patch to a different folder, then.

Edit: Or, I guess, turn off auto patching in your emulator of choice.

I'm for one glad that you did, this is interesting information to have. Specially for everyone who changes Wiggler. Does changing that address to different values give the Wiggler different palettes when stomped, or does it just disable the routine altogether?
