A hack that played around with non-linear aspects would be interesting. For example, using the "level appears over another level" trick from SDWTLC to make a level "change" for when you come back to it (for example, so a shop opens, or a previously-blocked path is opened)

I'd do it myself, but I'm shit at overworld design, so I'll just throw this out there

Is it just me or do alpha layer PNG avatars have a black background? Lemme see...

EDIT: Odd, must be the way the avvy uploader handles transparency.

1.) Please take the time to coherantly spell your post. Misspellings in the thread title are just going to ring alarm bells. If you're unsure of a word's spelling, just enter it into Google and see what it suggests. Or use dictionary.com. Whatever.

2.) The blue default MAP16 block is your enemy. Never use it, ever. I shouldn't have to say this, but there's been a distressing amount of love for it lately...

3.) Your first hack is very, very likely to suck. So is your second. Treat it as a learning experience, take people's advice on board, and improve.

4.) Download FPI's Chaos Complexx hack. It's a joke hack designed to be deliberately bad. If in any way your hack has even worse design, grammar, palletes and general Terror From Beyond Geocities, then please give the server database a rest and refrain from announcing it until you've improved it.

5.) Levels (or whole hacks...) that are hard purely for the sake of being hard are about as fun to play as being penetrated with a broom handle. With a nail through it. By Dick Cheney. Through your urethra. They are also not big or clever, and by making them, you are simply asking the world to hate you. Making the hack fun and interesting should be a much higher priority than making it difficult. If something is easy and fun, it is still fun.

Exactly. If a hack is really easy, but fun to play, it's still good. If it's really hard but still fun, same deal. However, it's easier for hackers to cross the "too hard" line than it is to cross the "too easy" line.

Thanks. I'll see if I can get off my ass - I've already done the only proper good level in the game, now I just have to do the rest

I like the overworld, and it looks like you've made a decent start. The enemies, however, really need more detail, like outlines or shading, so they blend in with the graphical style.

I had a similar idea to this.

The Star Road has always been a puzzle world. Well, why not make it more interesting by making levels outside of it unlock a pathway in the Star World? Use silent layer 1 events to make the pathway open up after a certain event. This would be great if you made it to where you have to open a path to reach Bowser or something like that...
Yeah, one example of my idea is, like, one level is just a locked pipe or something, with Side Exits enabled so you can wander off. Later on in another level, you find a "Pipe Key" (ExGFX'd Question Sphere) and it replaces the locked pipe level with a near-identical level, except the pipe is unlocked and free to go down.

I'm rambling, aren't I?

The checksum is simply a little majiggy that checks whether the game has been modified or not. Since you've hacked or patched the rom, the checksum is going to fail.

As mentioned, nothing comes of this.

that doesn't slightly distort the graphics like Kega Fusion (trying to do some nice shiny graphic rips, see). If it also had the benefit of not sucking that'd be good too.

This shows some actual improvement on legoman's part, I'm happy to say! There are still a number of newbie mistakes (overuse of 3up moons, generally underdetailed levels) but the quality has elevated from "laughably terrible" to "basic newbie hack".

A step in the right direction.
