You know the dust cloud made by fireballs when they hit an enemy? The cloud is comprised of four of those. So you'd have to figure a way around that as well.

@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

There, I've created a horozontal scrollbar in this topic that will affect people on PSPs, and maybe certain low resolutions. This makes me an "E-Annoyance" to PSP users, I presume. I wonder if I'm going to disappear off this Earth within the next few days, at least as far as the government is concerned.

(although in seriousness, this is probably not going to be enforced, except under extreme circumstances, such as child molestation; there may be general demands around extending it to all sections of the web, but they'll likely be made by 40-50 year olds who play games on Pogo all day long; nothing to worry about)

What are you talking about? That doesn't tell us much, and what it does tell us could mean any number of things. You started hacking around 2002 and have life problems now? You started hacking around 2002, got some life problems; but now, you're back? You were dumped by your girlfriend and are now contemplating suicide? Explain further, please.

Night. No contest. It's good looking, easy on the eyes and has a good color setup. Icy Blue takes a close second place. Purple and Kafuka are tied for third.

Yeah. And besides, we were all bad at level design once. Even if someone does have poor level design right now, he has to learn from his mistakes first. And there's always the "unintentional hack improvement" effect. That's what happens when a newbie hacker with great potential (and more importantly, a follower of the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" philosophy) starts a hack, and gains experience as he continues to make levels. This creates an "artificial" effect of levels becoming better and better as time goes on. Most hacks get boring around World 6 or 7, the only reason why I finish those kinds of hacks is because it's too late to quit at that point. Now, why must the hacker not fix what isn't broken? Well, if he did that, the level quality would be put at a constant, and it'd become boring towards the end as it usually is. Many hackers seem to make that mistake. Side effects include lots of levels ending up as rehashes of one another, boring the player, and more. DW:TLC is one of the few released hacks that keeps you eagerly going until the very end.

In short, the "unintentional hack improvement" effect is what happens when a new hacker with great potential starts a hack when he has bare minimal knowledge of ROM hacking, and ends it when he has amazing talent all around, good level ideas, knowledge of what people want to see in a hack and more. This creates the effect of the levels getting better and better as time goes on, which keeps the player motivated to play. If those early levels in the beginning were to have their level designs "fixed", the hack would instantly become more boring.

So many awesome memories. Some of that stuff, looking back on it, is so ridiculous that it makes Vin Diesel jokes run in fear. BEAT THE ELITE 4 273 TIMES IN A ROW WITHOUT SAVING AND YOU'LL GET 39 MIST STONES. USE THEM TO GET INTO BILL'S SECRET GARDEN AND CATCH MEWTHREE lolol. Good times.

If only there was a Pokemon rumor generator site...

1. Just add in the ability to sort by category/creator/platform/etc., and you'll be all set.

2. Only put in complete hacks, and they have to stand out in a way (IOW, no stereotypical SMW hacks unless they're really different and/or good). Try to stay away from hosting hacks that aren't good, too.

3. Going with #2, we don't want this to turn into n00b hack central. Especially with all those...unethical SMW hacks crawling around. The requirements to get in should be fairly strict. Enough to keep the bad to average hacks out and the great hacks in.

A voting system wouldn't be plausable in a situation like this (hell, not even ANY situation), due to voting bias. There would simply be a lack of votes. This will happen regardless of how much you promote the site, which could cause the better hacks to get buried under a sea, or worse - in the middle - of shitty ones. Text only hacks, monster hacks (for RPGs), stupid graphics hacks (good ones could get in, though), n00b hacks, ordinary hacks, etc. shouldn't be allowed in. Note that "ordinary" is defined as "average of all hacks for that game." It is really only a big factor with games like Super Mario World. In short, you should only host hacks that stand out from others in a positive way.

You don't need to destroy that hologram device, FYI. Despite what some guides say, you still don't have to destroy that to get the good future. And it's called Stardust Speedway, not Starlight Speedway.

That would work fine. However, you still shouldn't put up demos, unless they are extrodinary. SMO, for example. There are one too many demos of hacks out there, so you should at least not allow short demos (IE: 1-2 World/Level Demos), and should get rid of the demos when the full hack is released. Publicly written reviews? That should work perfectly.

I still say it would be more fun to make it look as if everyone on the boards except the user viewing the boards is called "Spartacus". From their point of view, everyone but themself would have that name. It'd probably scare a few n00bs as well.

Actually Xkeeper, I believe that pseudo-3D graphics are the new type of graphics that everybody seems to love. YI and SMAS graphics are pretty much standardized, and yet are somehow still in the "WOW! AMAZING!" section. Things from obscure games seem to be popular as well, but if it's custom-made or from a semi-popular game, it usually is looked down upon for some stupid reason. And this hack uses YI and SMAS graphics a lot, and it is being shunned for bad graphics. Ridiculous, isn't it?

Sure looks like it, now that you mention it. I remember the exact same thing being used in the Hot Springs in SMO. The poison effect is used during the Wendy Boss Battle, I believe. That was an interesting fight. By the way, while we're on the subject of the poison ASM hack, have you ever publicly released this? I wish to use a variation of it in one of the levels in my hack. If you care to know, without going into too much detail, the level will have you navigating a poisonous gas maze, sort of like that section of Hazy Maze Cave in SM64.

Exactly, Elmo. Personally, I couldn't get the time stones when I was younger, but I can easily get them all now. IIRC, I had them all by Quartz Quadrent Act 2. As I might add, that's sort of like saying Windows has bad design because there are multiple ways to do things; say close a window. You can use the X, double click the top left corner, right click on the toolbar and close it, ALT+F4, CTRL+W, etc.

And about the soundtrack comment...you're right. With the sole exception of the Stardust Speedway tracks (the past music is the same in both versions ), the American version's music stinks. What, with all the chanting women and all. They ruin Tidal Tempest's music completely. Hell, when using that argument, Tidal Tempest Bad Future is the track I often present as the biggest difference. The evil mood of the bad futures in the Japanese/European soundtracks just seems to fit the levels a lot better. The US soundtrack doesn't sound anything at all like something that would be in a Sonic game, except for Stardust Speedway (but in the case of that, both soundtracks are really good).

It just isn't the same to watch those types of shows again at this age. You notice things that you didn't notice before. For example, in Cow and Chicken, all of Cow's dolls are named after STDs. The things they got away with back then are ridiculous. Why can't they make cartoons the way they used to...there are a few of them with that classic charm mentioned in the topic title that are in production today, but they aren't as plentiful as they used to be.

Awesome! Reminds me Contra or something. Nice job with the graphics as well; it gives a feeling completely different from a Mario game. Hell, if the status bar wasn't there, you wouldn't even be able to tell, except perhaps from the trees. Keep up the good work.

I'd do anything, as long as it wasn't illegal, risky or pertaining to sex. After all, we don't want to end up in jail or with STDs or something. But honestly, if I knew I could 100% get away with the illegal act, I'd do it.
