| Another weird oddity I noticed in some hacks is that underwater levels, autoscroll and munchers (usually in the form of the Jellyfish from SMB3) do not mix. Usually, it'll be fine if you happen to touch one. But if you approach one from the right (wrong?) angle, Mario's graphics will spaz out for a few seconds while he shrinks. It is harmless to gameplay, but it sure looks strange. (edited by asdf on 12-10-05 04:30 AM) (edited by asdf on 12-10-05 04:31 AM) |

| Is there any way to trigger the fast background scroll (Sprite F4) without the use of Sprite C1? It's obvious that having some moving grey blocks in a level isn't exactly going to be healthy for your level design. The level I am making would just look wrong without the fast background scrolling, so not using it is out of the question as well. I remember this effect being in one hack, but I forgot what it was. Any help would be appriciated. (edited by asdf on 12-10-05 04:36 AM) |

| I don't recall there being a Fast BG Scroll block for BlockTool. I tried LevelASM as well. For some reason, it did not work. I followed the instructions to the detail, but it still did nothing (although it did not crash). | |||

| I looked. There is no such block in the latest version of Blocktool. Are you sure you didn't make it yourself?
I tried the LevelASM Method again. I now know that the LevelASM system was successfully implemented (in an ironic way too, because a typo in the code table for the level caused a crash when I went to said level). After fixing that typo, I tried it again. That time, it didn't crash, but it didn't work either. I don't think I understand what I need to do, although I probably have a good idea of what to do. Here's the hex of what I put in. C2 20 A9 66 14 18 69 00 20 89 66 14 E2 20 6B What am I doing wrong? (edited by asdf on 12-11-05 01:39 AM) |

| That block worked. Thanks.
Although I still want to know what I was doing wrong with the ASM. Just in case I ever wish to insert other ASM later. ![]() (edited by asdf on 12-11-05 02:56 AM) (edited by asdf on 12-11-05 02:56 AM) |

| No, unless you count Tile 0x41 in the 16x16 Overworld Tile Selector. However, that is only a small section of *diagonal* climbing which only goes on for a very short time (edited by asdf on 12-11-05 02:39 PM) |

| Twinkle Star, that works, but it also screws up part of the flopping fish (Cheep-Cheep) tiles. You'll have to use ExGFX instead of normal GFX if you want to get around that. | |||

| I tried the "Frog" sprite without checking "dies when jumped on". The results were hilarious. The enemy walked to the left, but kept jumping to the right. I stomped on it, and a shell with the wrong graphics (yet fully functional) appeared, and a red shelled koopa ROCKETED into the sky, came down around 8 seconds later, and fell off the screen.
Here are some I created. Green Shelless + (Jumping Pirhana Plant) = Rockets into the air upon seeing Mario Goomba + (Jumping Pirhana Plant) = Seems a lot like a nipper plant from SMB3, only more random. Falling Spiny + (Jumping Pirhana Plant) = Does a small hop, then turns into a normal spiny with glitched graphics. Spiny + (Jumping Pirhana Plant) = Same as Goomba and JPP. "Unused fish that can't swim" (sprite 17) + (Jumping Pirhana Plant) = This one is nearly perfect! It behaves like a Ninji, only it jumps about twice as high. One oddity doesn't face you (can be worked around with creativity in graphics creation). The catch is that it stops jumping when you get near. Damn! Sprite 17 + (Diggin' Chuck's Rock) = A sprite that bounces, staying at one consistant height. Green Shelless + (Diggin' Chuck's Rock) = Jumping around crazily. Swimming Jumping Fish that doesn't need water (sprite 47) + (Diggin' Chuck's Rock) = Hard to describe. Very disturbing and scary movement pattern, which seems to be a zig zag downward of sorts, followed by a high jump into the air. Green Shelless + (Directional Coins) = Flies into the sky upon seeing Mario. Slower than the JPP variation. Diggin' Chuck's Rock + (Green Jumping Paratroopa) = Similar to "Pogo Stick Koopa", the difference being if slopes or something get in its way, it will do two smaller jumps and resume the high jumping. Note that "time" is not included on this list. This is because that problem is without a doubt so widespread, that the results would be redundaunt. Don't let the lack of time aspect influence your answers either. We are speaking in terms of "if you had an infinite amount of free time to get your hack done with no outside influences, which of these would hold you up the most?" Also, keep in mind that this isn't a matter of what you spend the most time on. This is a matter of the positive intensity of the outcome in the end compared to the amount of time it takes to reach that result. If it takes you a full week to create a custom ASM routine that is amazing, but three days to set up your graphics, then you would choose the graphics option.
Personally, I find that making and finding graphics seems to be my slowest spot. I have no lack of inspiration nor am I poor at level design, but I simply cannot find the graphics that suit my needs. Although I am able to make graphics, they usually don't turn out well. |

No. That's just to throw you off (and maybe to serve as a tribute to FuSoYa's disturbing fanboyish lusts ). The dates egg works like this. On four certain days of the year (according to your computer's clock), if you open up any hack in Lunar Magic and go to the overworld editor, the Mario sprite displayed there will be different. St. Patrick's Day, for example, will result in Luigi appearing instead of Mario. Christmas is another one of the days. I forget the other two, though.(edited by asdf on 12-17-05 11:58 PM) (edited by asdf on 12-17-05 11:59 PM) |

In this case, it is the latter. The "game" is to find what days these are. (edited by asdf on 12-18-05 01:17 AM) (edited by asdf on 12-18-05 01:17 AM) |

| SMB3 Goombas can be gotten through Mario World Reconfigurer.
SMB3 Bricks can be gotten through BlockTool. SMA4: SMB3 1-1 Grey Cement Blocks can be gotten through Lunar Magic ExGFX. SMB3 Wooden Blocks can also be gotten through Lunar Magic ExGFX (edited by asdf on 12-19-05 04:37 AM) |

| I find your lack of a particular symbol disturbing. Cultists such as you guys must crop up a lot in this world. I kindly ask that you put a stop to this ridiculous approach to communication. If not, I wish that your unnatural community to succumb to a horrid affliction. (edited by asdf on 12-19-05 11:49 PM) |

| I thoughtfully doubt your assimilation. Such an accusation of practicing your dark ways is absurb. It simply is not logical for an invidivual against this group to inhabit it without his knowing about that classification. | |||

How dare you. They are called "hiccups". They are not cool enough to have the title of the hiccups.
Really, I'm just saying that because one time, I had them for four hours. Sometimes, I can get rid of them by gulping down a lot of soda right after a hiccup, and bleching as hard as I can. But not that one time. |

| Good idea. Blocktool is in desperate need of an update anyhow. There's that slowdown problem, plus due to limitations of whatever Jonwil used to design it, you need to do hex to dec conversions (which works, but is unwieldly). I believe there are other problems with it as well, such as the "5 Yoshi Coin" and "No 5 Yoshi Coin" blocks being reversed. In addition, the code only works if you have exactly 5 Yoshi coins, despite what the usage notes say (you just need to change one byte for them to work as intended, though) (edited by asdf on 12-22-05 01:21 AM) |

If you don't stop making such excellent hacks with great level design combined with unnatural rewrites to the game code, I'm afraid I'm going to have to report you to the feds for knowing too much. ![]() |
