So I was chillin' out one day with my homies, smokin some pot like we usually did. We were discussing last night's football game. Suddenly, a dark red car pulled up beside us. We knew immediately what that meant, a rival gang was arriving. A window of the mysterious automobile rolled down, revealing a man with an eerie aura surrounding him. We approached it with caution. The strange man handed my friend Samuel a note, and drove off. The note stated that his gang had officially challenged ours to a turf war to take place at 11:30 PM Tuesday night.

The specifics of it shocked us all, though. There would be no weapons nor vehicles involved. It would be a fight to the death, our only weapons being our own fists. Arnold had taken boxing lessons, so he decided to teach us the way of the warrior. I had difficulty learning the techniques, though. I was ready to give up. That is when I remembered back to the time when I bailed out on some of my homies. There was a drive-by shooting, and I had an AK-47 with me. I could've easily stopped the car, but I dove for cover instead. All three of my fellow gangsters ended up dead. I was not about to let that happen again. Confidence regained, I went from an ameteur to a near-expert in just three days. I planned to fight for the honor of my gang, even if it meant death.

Tuesday night rolled around. This was it. The night of the turf war. Most of the gang was present in the dark alley we planned to quarrel in. The night was hot and humid. The suspense was unbearable. I was ready to kick some ass. Suddenly, we saw headlights approaching. It was them. They emerged from their vehicles in groups of four. We stared each other down. Our numbers were equal. After about a minute or so, one of their goons made the first move. He screamed out a war cry as he charged in for a sucker punch on Daniel. Luckily, my homie blocked it and punched the guy's nose in. From that point on, it was utter chaos. I fought hard without backing down. Knocking out those guys was easy, as they were unskilled in defending themselves. Reinforcements of theirs soon arrived though, and some tougher gang members joined in. We still managed to keep them busy, however. Then, it happened. A cry of pain. I looked to my left to see one of the rival gang members plunging a knife into my homie's body. "Those cheating bastards" I thought to myself. I dashed over to the asshat who did it, kicked the knife clear out of his hands with surprising precision, and smashed him in the mouth. This was turning out to be a more difficult battle than I thought.

Suddenly, a car sped into the war zone and stopped in the middle. I quickly realized it was armed with a bomb, stopped what I was doing, and ran away from the ticking time bomb. It exploded just as I got at a safe distance. Nobody else survived.

Saddened by this senseless loss, I moped back to the hideout. I saw light coming from a room though. It was a colorful light, with no sound accompanied. Using stealth, I crept up to the room and peered inside. I saw a lone member of the enemy gang, on the computer in his rival gang's hideout. Pulling out my switchblade, I snuck up behind him, covered his mouth, and slit his throat. Moving the dead corpse out of the way, I looked at the computer screen and saw this.

Or better yet, fuck that shit and upload your images to ImageShack and have it automatically convert your BMPs to PNGs (without even having to tell it to do so) plus get hosting.

I have no idea. You're obviously using peter_ac's hack as a base. Perhaps he made a special block for those coins, and they don't like the way you made the level

Plus, points don't mean a thing. Still, it's amusing to get into a closed corridor with a mushroom in the reserve and keep on throwing it up into the air and collecting it.

I believe he is talking about how "special item" (i.e. DW:TLC) graphics get screwed up without said patch, and he wants it because he will be using those special items in his hack.

Fuck that converter, it's pointless. Just upload the images to ImageShack and it'll do the BMP-to-PNG conversion for you, *AND* give you a place to host images.

Downloading the patch now...

EDIT: Wow. I have mixed feelings about this hack. On one hand, there are minor design problems (most notably the time being too high) that don't affect gameplay too much. But on the other hand, your concepts are amazing. There are design problems, but no graphical errors, and as far as I'm concerned, being interesting cancels out minor design problems, and then some. Probably the second or third best hack I've seen in terms of concepts.

Some reprecuring design flaws...

- Timer is set too high.
- Not using bottom corner tiles for certain cliffs
- One side of a platform being non solid, the other being solid.

In addition...

- You can get smacked from below with the spikes in the Ghost Ship.

I'll post screenshots of various bugs later.

Wow, that's pretty insane. I'll try scanning an executable instead and see if it still finds all of those viruses...

Edit: Yep, even the main executable is full of it... I wonder what's going on.

The only thing I can think of, although absurd, is that there is a new virus that makes the program think innocent programs are viruses. It's highly unlikely, but it's the only thing I could think of that could be causing this to happen.

Don't think that all viruses can be spotted from the moment they are unleashed. This; judging by the timestamps; seems to be a brand new virus. The other possibility is a recent update to the virus list that shares some code with YY-CHR and makes the program think it is a virus.

Hmm. I'm certain somebody's already found it, but you can disable gliding by changing $5A6D to 9C. When Mario hits the peak of his flight, he'll simply drop into "float" mode. This would at least prevent people from flying over the whole level.

That's still extremely cheap. You can always jump again and do another super-duper-mega-jump after landing. The "spin of death" would also still be present.

Actually, that method has been overdone to the point of being perfectly-cooked. There are many hacks which have power-ups lined up this way, although some introduce it at the very end. We don't want to overdo it to death, now, do we?

Press Y repeatedly. There's your answer.

And floating with the cape isn't that bad if you can come up with some good ideas. Sort of like Parrot Chute Panic from DKC2. Of course, constant demand to float bounce over long distances isn't a very good idea.

However, many hack makers believe the cape is broken: and it is. The spin of death and flying over levels pretty much make it a power-up that can easily be abused. Ideally, someone should find out how to make it so that there is a delay between spinning. And even with a Raccoon Mario patch, as I mentioned earlier, upon landing you can immediately "take off" once more, if you're going fast enough. In fact, Raccoon Mario may be slightly cheaper than Cape Mario due to his ability to control his flight a little better.

And I do have some tricks with Power-Ups and level design up my sleeve. It's too early to reveal them now, however.

I find it hilarious how once things get popular, people bitch and moan about them being overused, despite the fact that the original graphics are used even more. It gets even worse with worlds. People complain about overused "abnormal" themes (for example, Crystal Caverns), and yet, they still continue to make hundreds of ice worlds, desert worlds and sky worlds. Nobody complains about those.

In any case, you should use a mix of both graphics for the best effect.

Silly overformal man, not knowledgeable in the ways of the "can't find the words" type of n00b.

TRANSLATION: Almost all Super Mario World hacks today have an edited overworld. However, I only want to add a few levels that were unused in the original game into my hack, just for fun. These levels would be completely optional. I am not sure if Lunar Magic has full support for custom palettes. If I were to change the overworld palettes, would it affect anything important in the levels themselves? Editing the overworld is very different from level editing, and I am having trouble figuring it out. Is there any tutorial out there that gives a detailed explanation about editing the overworld AND is easy to understand?

If you know of any hacks out there that feature a space tileset, I would like to see a screenshot of it. That way, I can compare it to my hand-made one, just to see which is better.

To answer your second question, yes, to some degree. BMF54123's hack has a spaceship tileset. A SML2 remake someone is making (not Sgraff87) will inevitably have Space Zone, and therefore, will have a space tileset.

For your first question, don't worry. Go wild with the palettes on the overworld. As long as you only change the colors that vary between the palettes of submaps, you'll be fine.
