Layer 1 is the ground and water tiles.

Layer 2 is the Mario paths, graphics with transparency, and level tiles.

If I shoot my red shell behind me, Zem will get knocked onto an item square, where he might pull a spike shell. That's not good. Just roll.

Never mind, the board changed. My new strategy is to simply roll. If I get to at least third, I want to fire my red shell. If I go to first, I'll keep it stored. If I'm fourth or lower, I'll keep it.

How's a non-linear overworld like this? (note: if you need more clarification, I'm more then willing to show the submaps or show the pipe links.

Note: unfinished, I still need to do some graphics editing.

Maybe the crew puts on armored overalls over their normal denim overalls Therefore, the "nothing" relates to "no armored overalls". Not neccessaraly no overalls at all

Nah, I never thought your OW looked anything like the original. It just seems empty. You could add some random islands like the island in the northwest corner in the original SMW map, that exist only to fill space.
