Java's not slow. Hell, if it can run a 3D desktop that's prettier and more featureful than Windows Vista and runs on a Pentium 2, I hardly call that slow.

I tried putting it my iPod's hard disk into a MAX Media Dock (even with some doubt that it'd have enough power to do anything), and now the console is, quite simply, dead. Seriously, it won't turn on.

So far I've tried to take out and put back in the battery, plug it into the wall with and without the battery, and even freezing the DS for a bit (if it were turning off due to some overheating protection, I thought this would help). When I plug in the DS without the battery, the orange "battery charging" light comes on briefly, and turns off. Within this time, I can press or keep holding down the power button; the green light would turn on for a bit, but again turn off. I can't visibly see the screen turn on (either picture or backlight), but I can hear that faint pop of the speakers.

This is unnerving. My warranty's already void (hello, FlashMe and unlicensed devices (MAX Media Dock, EFA flash cart)), so there's not much I can do from that side. If it comes on again, I could try to trade it into EB Games/GameStop and pay up $50 for a DS Lite, though I'd feel guilty about it; either that, or I'd pay the full $130 price for a DS Lite. MAYBE I could sell it as a broken DS on eBay, some people seem to buy dead units for spare parts or experimental reasons. If it comes on again, I'm not sure if it would be permanent; after all, my iPod came back to life for a few days only to go poof again.

I don't know what else to try. If you have any suggestions, I'd be happy to try them.

At worst, you can have a loopback with your sound card outputs. This would be of noticable low quality, but it works, and sometimes it's enough.

Well, the iPod's hard disk just uses a CompactFlash interface, I didn't imagine things going so badly

Maybe tomorrow I'll call Nintendo and ask them about repairing it and how much it'd cost. I don't want to drive to Redmond (it's 15 miles or so) just to be disuaded. I'd probably leave out all the details, and just say someone told me it was a blown fuse.

Maybe, the Java VM only uses up like half a meg on my machine. The only downside is that it took like six hours to compile (stupid legal restrictions making it impossible for a binary package to exist for my OS)

You could use RIP and use this command: dd if=/dev/hda of=/dev/hdb bs=32k (the bs (blocksize) is actually optional, but it goes faster with a larger one to a certain point (32k is almost always good))

Read /dev/bios or /dev/cdrom. btw, you never said that you were restricted to a certain operating system, so this counts.

I haven't played it, but some of the things that jumped at me from the screenshots (in order of what the board displays):
  1. Do those diagonal land pieces have any purpose?
  2. The background with the dry-bones is too bright, it makes it difficult to see Mario; also, if you're outside of the box, you'd have a good time guessing weather that's a solid wall or not (at least, that would be for me)
  3. The titlescreen's border just seems....bleh

I should make it so that localmods of ROM (and SMW) Hacking and fullmods can approve/deny. Once I figure out how the approval system works and I finish dinner
