Eh.. out of those, Java would be the best choice. But I'd recommend using Qt or GTK instead. You do know that you can install them just in your user profile instead of the global filesystem, right?

Tcl/Tk is okay, but writting directly to X11 calls is absolute hell even for simple things.

Some games have different ROMs with a PRG-number in the name. For example, Super Mario Bros. 3 (PRG0) or (PRG1)

the GoodCodes.txt file that comes with the GoodTool doesn't say anything about them.

Funny... last time I tried WinRAR, it automatically stole my file extensions without asking (instant uninstall). 7-Zip was always cooperative.

So with GoodTools it's basically the same as different versions (but UNIF is actually some feature in the way the cart is dumped). Thanks Dwedit..

Not to disrespect any of the others, I appreciate the fact that you were at least trying to help with some brainstorming

So the symptoms you described sounds like all the versions of Explorer from 95 to XP anyway ;P

I can recommend:
* Blackbox (for Windows of course, bb4win.org)
* ROS Explorer
* A better OS

Like the Super Mario World "for" NES? A pirate game that's pretty decent for what it's worth..

Hell I wonder if I'm allowed to link to it here. It's not licensed, nor does it even have a copyright notice on it

But that's probably why I'm not one, eh

Yeah the poll system here got f'ed up like crazy.

If you really don't care about GameFAQs, why not. If you have the chance of returning, then don't do it.

On the side, I have 1170 karma !!

Just some disambiguation: QBASIC came with MS-DOS 5.0-6.22 (also on the Windows 95/98 CD-ROMs burried in some directory), it was merely an interpreter. QuickBASIC was the one Microsoft sold (compatible with code written in QBASIC, but QBASIC wasn't always compatible with QuickBASIC-made programs), with the added ability to compile programs into a cruel executable binary that depended on QuickBASIC libraries unless you made a static binary that boosted the size by a lot.

Anyhow I used to have True BASIC for MS-DOS, that was rather nice, so much more than any of the BASICs Microsoft bundled with their OS (QBASIC.. GW-BASIC, I think there's a third). That was many years ago though.

FreeBASIC looks neat. Probably still not worth making production-quality software in it, but nice enough for a learning experience.

Too slow, mind posting an emulation movie (few kilobytes) instead, describing what emulator version it's for?

Maybe the feature is already in the source but there's no interface to toggle it?

Also: how in the hell does a source release mean there's going to be no official releases anymore? That doesn't even make sense.

By the way, using Qt lets you recompile your programs on Mac OS X and Windows painlessly and still have them look like native applications. GTK is ugly on both OS X and Windows.

If you're releasing the program, you must use a GPL-compatible license (list) for your program to use the free software (GPL'd) version of Qt. If you're making a proprietary program, then you have to pay a lot of money for a version of Qt that allows it.

In-house projects... things that will never be released and such should be just fine with the free software version of Qt. Legally, no one's going to care if it's not going outside of your labs.

Well Litestep seems nice, but when I tried it, it wasn't so great for the real deal.

A virus does seem unlikely to me too, the bugs of Explorer you described happen to me all the time in Windows.
