You're telling me... I've spent the last two hours scouring the net for music hacking software for the NES. I Couldn't find barely anything, the ones that worked were rubbish and didn't actually do anything except list the names of the tracks inside the rom, and the other links took me to places that use phrases such as 'Rom Hacking' and 'Game Boy Advance Roms' to draw you into thinking that they are actual sites dedicated to the phrase, but in actual fact take you to some explicit site. Don't you just hate it when that happens?

Sorry about that guys, I pressed post reply before I had even written my message.
1) That gameshark code is funny, but the novelty wears off after 5 seconds.
2) Midi and Wav extracting and inserting to roms seems to not be thought of as a thing to be needed and so barely anybody can be bothered...

I'm bored of talking about music editing now and I bet so are you, So i will shut up for a while, possibly get some sleep (i haven't had any for 3 days...)

I know this topic gets overused, but I'm really having trouble with one of my edits.
I want to edit the Mario Sprites to look like those of SMB3. I can't make sense of all the other posts on this.
Here is what I have been trying:

1) Open LM
2)Open 8x8 tile editor
3) pressing ctrl+Shift+Pgdwn to open sprite tiles
4) Scrolling down until I find the Mario Sprites
5)Clicking on tiles and editing them

Now is the snag. I cannot paste over the current mario sprites

Could somebody please tell me exactly how to do it properly from starting up Lunar Magic, or perhaps give me a link to some bin files that may place stuff over the currents.

just draw on the computer. Something I've found with scanning pictures in is that with a pencil, no matter how hard you press when you draw, it never scans in EXACTLY how you want it... Or is that just My stupid hardware acting up?

In SMW how do I edit the text and stuff in the intro.
I want to change the copyright bit at the bottom and also the main text at the top.
I already found out how to edit the level behind it. I think it's level C7 or something, but I can't find out how to edit the text on the intro.

Currently Creating *Super Mario: The Crystal Gateway*

SMW Hack
Description: The whole of Dinosaur land and the Mushroom Kingdom has been covered in ice. Wonder who is behind it!

The Idea of it: There are the main castle bosses (currently the same as the original) in new castles. Instead of carrying out a yoshi egg, Mario carries out a crystal shard, which is used later in the game to get to Bowser's Castle through the magic Crystal Gateway

Progress: Currently completed Yoshi's Island segment. (Day after easter 2006)

Right. I am making a full hack of Super Mario World. I decided that I would like SMB3 Mario sprites in the game.

I downloaded a file, and tried to take the .bin file (GFX32.bin) from the rom and tried to delete the old ones from my hack and replace them with the SMB3 ones. Now my problem is that they are distorted. I don't know what to do. I'm guessing the problem is tileset, but I have no idea.

After trying that, I tried to bring my levels from my hack into the SMB3 Gfx edit that I downloaded. But now I get graphics I don't want (EG. Koopas - I have made my own and don't want the SMB3 ones) and the actual foregrounds in the my levels are not how I want them to be, and I cannot change the pallette of them.

The details of my hack are:
Most levels are using Pallette 5 for an Icy look
Most levels are slippy.
I have changed Koopa Sprites and Goomba sprites
I have changed turnblocks

The whole of Yoshi's Isl;and Part of the hack is edited, plus some extra levels.
Half of donut plainas

Now what do I do, I really really want the SMB3 Mario Graphics, but I really really don't want the other graphics.

What should I do?
Please answer quickly, because I need to get this done, or I will have to set the release date back another few weeks (I need this part done before i move on)

Super Mario the Crystal Gateway - It's no where near complete so don't think that it is. So far I have edited the title screens, all of yoshi's island (including more levels), the over world and half of donut plains - NOTE: Donut Plains Area 1 is only midly edited and is still pretty much the same level.

I will post the demo in an IPS patch in my next post, cos I need to host it somewhere (probably freewebs)

To do:Edit the Mario Graphics to SMB3 ones - If you can help I have a thread requesting help Here so If you can help please do - I can't stop it from being a distorted mario.
Finish the overworld
Finish the levels
Finish all the sprites

Well 1) The title - I had the Idea of taking the tiles out, and just haven't got round to fixing them.
2) Sorry I chose such rubbish screenshots, I was tired and it was 11:30PM
3)The Overworld needs a lot of work, I already know that.
4)The graphics are not really edited that much but oh well.

To tell ya the truth, screenshots cannot do justice to my rom. I just haven't edited the graphics enough yet.
I like to make some levels, much around with the graphics and THEN fix the graphics completely.

Sorry that the promised hack isn't here yet, I woke up 5 minutes ago.

I know it needs editing, but thats what it is, a demo tat I have been working on for a month.

Just to let you know, try every path, I mucked around with some of the events and paths don't always appear to you, but you can still follow them!

Loads to be fixed, try it!

Secondary Edit:
When you go left at the beggining, as it says "Slip Slip Sloop", press the down button. Mario follows the route around and is at the bottom of the vinestalk(stupid name lol). When you complete it he climbs the vinestalk. This is just to show that problem i stated, about paths not showing up, as you cannot see a highlighted path, just a dark one.

Not all of the levels are complete. I'm up to about the ghost house on donut plains. Everything is still got to be edited in donut plains to make it harder/better.

This just shows how it runs right now. and the format of how some levels will be!

tried that first.

this is what I do.

1)I Patch the GFX to a clean file.
2) I Open both my hack and the clean rom with Lunar Magic
3) I extract the GFX from both (They are both in different directories and so have different Graphics folders.
4)I copy the mario sprites (GFX32.bin if I don't use joined)
5)I paste them over page 32 of my sprites - definetly the mario one
6)I open My hacks minimizxed Lunar Magic window.
7)I press the "Insert GFX" Button
8)I save
9) I test it - in both SNES9X and ZNES - Mario is now distorted.

HELPPPPPP!!

I've watched loads of all the old ones, I loved the 1st series. New earth was excellent, although it had a kind of stupid story line, having Lady Cassandra coming back. Could have been better, but It was still good.

Thank you for all the comments

First off, the screenshots were taken down, as the first 6 replies were not really good ones. I did realise that, so they were taken off.

Secondly, The opening intro was just a bit of a test, and is to be completely redone.
Then the selections in dark - This was an entire accident, this WILL be changed.

The OW right now is simply a place to define for myself where all the levels are currently. The OW will be completely changed.

ES stands for 'Elemental Software'. At the top of the vine, you can see that the coins spell out "(c) ES 2006" and instead of Nintendo Presents it says 'ES Presents', to be changed into 'ES GIVES YOU'

Thanks Mike for pointing out the yellow switch in the switch palace needs to be more disguised, it will be. I didn't think of that.


The goomba graphics are wearing sunglasses. That is v1 of the goombas. They are not blind.( although perhaps they should be... They fall off ledges all the time)

The koopas have ski's to try and fit in with the ice and snow from the game. The pointed thing on the back is a graphical error, as I was editing it at about 11 o'clock, and hadn't had much sleep for ages.

Woosh does need a new background, but i havent time right now. Will be done latyer this week.

In the mountains, I didn't realise that there was a gap sorry. Whoever has tested it in my family have been killed by the blue koopa or the goomba just after it. I really didn't know it was there, so I'll have to sort that out. Thanks.

So far I have been more about editing levels before graphics. I am continuing to edit them later today.

Yoshis house is just there fopr now, like I said to tell me where each level has moved to.I am planning to take this out of the game.

All the levels are gunna be filled up even more with enemies and obstacled.

The blocks are just for now, and are to be fixed up and made flashy with new palletes.

The little 'GLITCH' after beating iggy is meant to be a crystal shard. It honestly looked brilliant in TLP, but looks rubbish in the hack. Will have to edit.

Thanks to everyone who has posted. The comments will hopefully help me to make the hack much more worthwhile your time. Expect the next demo sometime next month, complete with loads more levels.

I will keep the first demo online for you all to test if you havent done so already, but that demo is already outdated 2 days after being uploaded...
