As this forum suggests, this is indeed my first post on this board. I suppose I'll start off by introducing myself.

My name is Dave Lanier. I hail from the cow town of Hebron, Connecticut. I am currently a Junior at the University of Connecticut, studying Computer Science and Engineering. I have an awesome girlfriend, who is also a dork like me! I enjoy video games, especially RPGs, and massively multiplayer online games, although I haven't subscribed to one in awhile (note the engineering major status). I play DDR and D&D (Mmmm... acronym games). I love music. I play guitar, bass, drums, and keyboard. I'm currently in a Christian band as their electric guitarist. My favorite band is Symphony X.

Ehh... that's all I feel like saying about myself currently.

This looks like a really cool board, so I'm sure I'll be posting more soon!

I never watched American Idol until my g/f got me into it this year. But man, it gets too repetitive. They should kick out three people at a time to make the show shorter. But then again, they wouldn't make as much money would they? Thus is out culture, I suppose.

Regardless, I'm routing for Chris. Fuel lost their singer, and they said they are looking for a new one. They were contemplating recruiting Chris as their singer... wouldn't that be cool? That would be good publicity for Fuel as well.

I've been playing guitar for 5 years or so... I play electric guitar in a band:
[www.myspace.com/bannedloot] or [www.soundclick.com/paullanier]

I practiced really hard for the first couple of years. Even though my dad is also a guitarist, I am self taught. Here are a few tips for upcoming guitarists:

1) Guitar is a hard instrument to START on, but once you reach a certain point it gets exponentially easier. In other words, DON'T GIVE UP JUST YET!

2) Make sure your thumb is in the correct position (middle of your thumb in the middle of the back of the neck). This will give your fingers maximum reach. Once you get used to it, you'll thank me =)

3) Tabs are easy to start learning, and they are easy to visualize. Download some of your favorite songs in tab form, and try learning them. Don't be afraid to attempt harder songs as well, if you push yourself, you will learn faster. If you are willing to dish out a few meager dollars, here is a good site: [www.tabit.net] There is shareware also available. I learned using this program... it helped me a LOT! You can play back the tabs and listen to them in MIDI form. You can also write your own tabs.

4) Don't RELY on tabs. I know, I know, I just explained how cool tabs are. If you are serious about guitar though, you will need to know musical structure. Learn some music theory, and memorize the basic chords. The more you know about music theory, the easier it will be to jam using improv (my strength). It makes writing songs easier too!

5) Find someone to play with. Whether its a band, or a fellow guitarist... playing with people helps your rhythm and accuracy.

6) Have fun!

Posted on 04-13-06 12:27 PM, in METALHEADS! What cover would you want to hear at a show? Link
I would also agree with the general populous that covers aren't the best way to go. HOWEVER, they can get a crowd going if they really like a particular song. They will sing along and be energized from it. Sure, it doesn't show your skill as a band writing their own music, but it's good to have a cover or two to pull out once in awhile.

Here are my suggestions for a cover:

With a good keyboardist:
1) "The Accolade" by Symphony X

2) "Rivfader" by Fintroll (lol! erm... if the singer can sing like that)

3) "Bird of ill Omen" by Kalmah

[If you don't want to sing and still have a cover:]

a) "Salieri Strikes Back" by Warmen (A side project of Children of Bodom)

b) "Stratofortress" by Stratovarius

Without a keyboardist:
1) "Bat Country" by Avenged Sevenfold

2) "Master of Puppets" by Metallica

[To Captain Subtext: Run to the Hills by Avantasia?]

I heard something about Finntroll making a show for Adult Swim... was that an April Fool's joke!?!??!

For those of you who don't know who Finntroll is: There are a "Swamp Metal" band from Finland who integrated their music with accordians, and crazy happy riffs mixed with death metal screaming and quickness. That's the only way I can describe them. Now I hear that they are making a show for Adult Swim????

Posted on 04-13-06 12:36 PM, in chess anyone? Link
It's funny how a thread about chess is in the "sports" thread....

I'll play chess with people if they wish to challenge me... give me a message over AIM or on the board or something. I'm not awesome, but I'm ok at it Plus it's fun, and that's what is important. Yahoo is usually a good place to play it.

I wish I joined this board earlier so I could have a pool with you guys. Oh well =\

I picked Villanova to win.. and I only had UCLA as a correct final four team.

BTW, is anyone around the Springfield Mass area? I won $300 for Champions Sports Bar for coming in first place for www.rock102.com 's pool! Their bracket had the people pick each round instead of right from the beginning. If they had me pick from the beiginning I would have done horribly, lol. My 21st Birthday is this month too, so it's gonna be my 21st birthday party! However, most of my friends are like 20 or 19... so they can't come. I'll see if I can get more people, if not, I'd hate to see free alcohol and food go to waste...

I find those some pretty interesting statistics, Cruel Justice. I haven't affiliated myself with any politcal parties yet. However, Kerry seemed like the most logical choice, as your statistics suggested. Thank you for the welcome =)

Posted on 04-15-06 03:35 PM, in Anyone play Tanarus? Link
Tanarus is an old game from like... 1997 or 1996. It was made by Verant (Helped create Everquest), and has been taken over by Sony. It's a first person tank game with 5v5v5v5 arenas. The graphics are decent, they definitely don't take away from the game. There are five different tanks, you can capture bases to increase your team's ability to move freely, and each team has a flag they have to guard.

People still play it (including me), and I was wondering if anyone here plays, or has played it.

Heh... yeah, the Aquabats are a funny band. I like them a lot. Unfortunately I never got to see them live because I had other things to do. =( My friends saw them, and from what I heard, they were great live.

I use Axe: Phoenix... because my girlfriend loves that smell. I think it's pretty good too, although I've never tried Kilo. Maybe I should.
