OK.. So I'm writing a compression/decompression DLL in VB6 (And YES, you CAN write properly exported windows DLLs in VB6), but I'm a little stumped on how to go about writing a recompressor (the decompressor is done... mostly). See, I'm not quite sure hwo I would go about compressing data without writing an extremely slow compressor, I would think. Does anyone have any tips or helpful guides they know of? I'm looking through google for any ways to write a good compressor, btu I can't find any.

In case you're wondering, these are the compression types I need to support:

RLE - 5-bit run length
Incrementing RLE - 5-bit run length
2-byte RLE - 5-bit run length
LZ-Copy - 5-bit run length
LZ-Reverse-Coopy - 5-bit run length
LZ-Bit-Reversing-Copy - 5-bit run length
Uncompressed data blocks - 5-bit run length
RLE - 10-bit run length
Incrementing RLE - 10-bit run length
2-byte RLE - 10-bit run length
LZ-Copy - 10-bit run length
LZ-Reverse-Coopy - 10-bit run length
LZ-Bit-Reversing-Copy - 10-bit run length
Uncompressed data blocks - 10-bit run length

"Told ya." said the pink creature. "See? I AM right every once and a while."

"Oh be quiet, it was obvious." Just able to get out of the way before Alizabe crashed down into the wall, the boy walked over and knelt down beside her. "Hey, you okay? You had quite the little crash." He said, smiling sweetly, while the little creature on his shoulder looked at her.

"Heeeyyyy... You're like me! COOL!"

OOC: Sorry... flowery might not have been the best word for the job. Oh, and the boy isn't gay.

The boy called out after Alizabe. "Hey, waitasec!" Catchign up to Alizabe, he began talking. "You might as well know, I just came from that way. There's nothing left there. Anyways, you're welcome."

That wasn't the first time a girl had stared at the boy, or tried to look away from him in case of offending him. The boy actually didn't feel offended by others when they did that, just creeped out if they were male. "You know, I was trying ot talk to you. And F.Y.I., you're not the first girl who's pulled what you just did- don't worry, I don't get offended. Just creeped out if the starer is male. Anyways, as far as I know there's nothing that way, no stairs, just what looked like a one-way drop. Anyways, whatever. Good to meet you, I'm Sukasa."

"Yeah, he's a big goof" Said the little creature on Sukasa's shoulder

"Shut up, that's what you are. Anyways, this is my summon, Luminara. She's more of a little furball than anything, although... You did help me with that one slime..." Sukasa said, changing the focus of his words to Luminara. The little cat-person crossed her arms and took on a very proud, 'I rock' look, closing her eyes. "Of course, the score is still 1 to what, 35?" As Sukasa said that, Luminara opened her left eye halfway, looking at Sukasa with that little animated hollowed-out-plus symbol on her right temple.

I know... I sorta came up with a plan that involves looking through all the compressions, and looking for anything that gives a return on your byte usage (i.e. actually shrinks the data, as opposed to enlarging it [i.e. LZ-copy-10bit for a 1-byte string]), and then picks the best of those that do, only bothering to check the 10-bit runs is a 5-bit run of the same type can go to it's max. I wrote in how to handle uncompressed data, not the regular way, but one I think would be more effective (not to mention more possible without compromising cartain other compressions).

*Sukasa wields his copy of win98SE*

Yeah, XP would likely get you by. Heck, Win98SE worked when I was running stuff designed primarily for modern computers (Soundblaster Live! 24-bit), and I still use it. Considering Xp's age, it'll likely be supported by microsoft for a good long time, so no need to upgrade (apparently, no want either )

Ueah, my LZ-copy compressor find the longest amtch it can, then goes back when the match ends and continues looking for another, and eventually finds the longest and best match available, and compresses that.

"Well, I'll be gone then. Frankly, I need to get my new weapon made, this sword is toast." Running up the stairs, Sukasa caught up with Alizabe. "Hey," He called out to her, slowing down beside her. "I never did get your name."

I can't really give you a picture of a text file, but... I can drop a couple key words from it's commenting:

"KompreSS",
"Public function Comp", and
"Public function Decomp"

Figure out what they mean.

Posted on 09-22-06 10:31 PM, in VB6 - Overflow Error with 32760? Link
So, yeah, I'm working on a piece of code, and a bug gave me a wron goffset for another section of code in a decompression routine. I was using a counter for an array variable bIn(), and got this, where lpA = 8 and bin(9) = 145, and bIn(10) = 0, and lpC and lpB are unimportant (lpC was 0 FYI, and lpB was 18). The error was in the section "( (bIn(lpA+1) * 256) + bIn(lpa + 2) + lpC)":

bOut(lpB) = bOut( (bIn(lpA+1) * 256) + bIn(lpa + 2) + lpC)

lpA, lpB, and lpC were all long variables, and bIn() and bOut() were all byte variables.

So, bIn(lpA+1) = 145, and for 145*256 it gave me an overflow error. Any help as to why it did so? I then executed "Debug.Print 145*256" In the immediate pane, and ALso got an overflow error. Help?

"Windows DLL."

Screw ActiveX, I have the power of a linker proxy for VB6. ^^ So... this would work for C++, In case anyone is interested in a KA editorfor NES if there isn't already one, since KA and KSS use the same compression format.

Hahaha, I know I've been thinking of games from any and all older consoles being emulated on newer ones long before the Game Cube, PS2, or XBox came out. Maybe Nintendo should pay me for ripping my idea. Seriously, I doubt that anyone who has used a console emulator hasn't already had this idea come to them. It is usually the biased type of people who can't really come up with anything wrong with a system that try to use an argument like this.

It reminds me of people on this board who say the PS2 sucked because it broke so often. Truthfully, I haven't heard of anything from any of my friends about their PS2 breaking so often. In fact, I'm always hearing how Game Cube accessories (like controllers - made by Nintendo) are always breaking. And pretty much everyone I've talked to (I've had this problem countless times, also) has had the problem of starting up their Game Cube and their analog stick is going crazy - the game has just begun, and already the cursor is scrolling up at lightning speed. The most believable reason why these people say PS2s break so much is because so many damn people own them. Obviously, if more people own them, more people are going to have them break on them. Mine's perfectly fine; really, it's usually due to the owner's stupidity that their console is broken.

I'm not on either side. I'm probably even going to buy a Wii. I'm just tired of seeing people come up with the weakest of arguments.

What, they didn't think to make sure their controllers were set to the neutral position, like the manual says? My friend's PS2 broke, more specifically, it's laser quit. and the ONLY two nintendo accessories I had that broke were: One nintendo-made controller who's cord was chewed in half by a rabbit, and oen third-party controller that had a contact-cup-thing wear out on the "A" button.

It was the bagged stuff that was worst, I recall...

Then you had idiot store managers who'd taken the infected spinach out of the bags and sold it wholesale as fresh. Way to go guys. You keep making people ill.

Idiots.
