Does anyone know of a good free (or demo) data recovery software that can retrieve file off of a hard disk that has had Windows 98 reinstalled onto it after having the partition erased (I guess through fdisk)? I looke dup R-Studio, but it only supportsd files up to 64KB, and the file I'm wanting to recover is 4MB. (For those of you who are interested, it's the COTMK 1 ROM)

Yeah. it's scanning the hard drive that COTMK 1 was on Although I still won't be able to recover the file (yet - the demo only allow restoration of 64KB files), I'll know for sure whether COTMK 1 is there or not. So, if it is, then for sure it'll be un-iced and finished.

Just thought I'd share that little tidbit.

EDIT: I'm crying now - I found the file. Fully intact.

FUCK YEAH - COTMK 1 HAS BEEN SLATED FOR DE-ICING!

Not really funny, but neat: When I was two, I was shown how one electrical outlet was wired, and then showed my grandfather (the electrician for us) how to wire every other outlet in the house - correctly.

That doesn't make a whole lot of sense - the pre-built computer came with 5 GB of stuff on it... so, wouldn't winXP have overwritten the first bit, and not the later part of hte drive where your hack woudl have been?

EDIT: That is, after formatting the HDD (which woudl likely have been just wiping the partition/file system)

I know about fragmentation. I'm saying that... nevermind. I suppose if earlier crud got deleted, parts of the ROM would possibly have been moved to an earlier part of the drive.

I assumed that the ROM had been placed on the drive after the 5GB of crud, and that the crud had not moved ==> no empty clusters in the beginning part of the HDD ==> ROM in the later part.
