If any of you read the Bob and George internet spritecomic, you'll know which two characters my name's spliced from. This is because: A. My real name's very, VERY similar to those two characters fused together (Mike and Rick O'Shay) and B. I wanted an online name that had "Mike" in it, yet still made sense for the spritecomic I was making a few years back. (My character was a fusion of several different aspects of Megaman 7 characters and their body parts.)

I came here looking for some good Super Mario World hacks, then accidentally somehow registered on the OLD forum (even though 2/3 of the links didn't even really work anymore), then was surprised when it didn't let me log in, then I finally realized that I was an idiot and joined this one. I actually enjoy your ToS here. You're allowed to swear, you don't allow homophobic comments, and grammar is a one-way ticket to respect.

Hmm... let's see... I'm not all that good at hacking (which I prefer to type in leetspeek, because it makes me feel less illegal (not trying to diss hacking or anything, by the way)) SMW. I don't have a CLUE how to properly edit the tiles for backgrounds and make my own custom one. The most major thing I've done so far with my hack has been editing the speakerbox (which, in my opinion, looks pretty good.)

I've tried downloading the YY CHR tile-editor, but my computer blocks the file, my scanner thinks it's a virus, and once I fix both of those things the file won't even do anything when I double-click it.

I'm into gaming, message boards, old-school gaming, occasionally biking, Nintendo, working at Domino's Pizza, and 90% of all things Mario-related. Last year I won my school's Halloween Costume Contest with my "Cool Super Mario" outfit, topped off with having the original SMB theme playing non-stop (except for in-class) inside my backpack. For those of you wondering, I won a huge plastic goblet filled with Tootsie Rolls, Pops, and assorted caramel cubes.

If anyone has any tips for hacking they'd like to share with me, It would be greatly appreciated. (Note: I know my introduction's way too long. )

Thanks for the welcome.

I've seen about three different topics regarding the YY-CHR Vs. AVG battle, and none of them seem to have a constant solution that doesn't have to do with making my computer vulnerable. Also, it seems as though Windows itself blocks the individual files that come with the download, and after I've unblocked them and made AVG "ignore" the "virus" (The f'ing "VIRUS DETECTED" screen pops up in a matter of seconds afterwards), when I double-click the program nothing happens.

I think I might need to look around for a new virus-scanning program that's free, yet doesn't suck.

Heh... sure. In fact, for the past three years, I've done something Mario-related.

I despise smoking to pretty much the largest extent that someone can, without actually telling anyone to stop it. Whenever I see topics like this, I always think of every possible downside of it. Bad smell, bad teeth, bad lungs, bad heart, earlier body-decay, hindered ability to smell or taste, always lacking funds, loss of popularity (from GOOD people, that is), hugher possibility of tumors and cancer, clothes smell, clothes can get burnt, skin can get burnt, skin/clothes can become covered in ash, you can accidentally start a forest fire, then get beaten up by bears who later inhabit your house and have non-stop crazy parties which piss off the neighbours, who're angry, yet too kind to tell you to turn off the loud music, and lots of other downsides.

My nose is VERY good at detecting cigarette smoke, while not quite being as trained at detecting cigar smoke. I can tell when someone's been smoking in a car, even if they're not currently doing so. Whenever I smell people smoking, I get away from them as fast as I can. I hold my breath, cover my mouth/nose, get away, then exhale as much as I possibly can.

The reason I don't just walk up to people and say, "Hey! Quit smoking you freaking idiot!" is because I'm afraid of what they'll do to me. They could take their lit cigarette and crunch it into my skin until it goes out, burning me badly, they could blow large puffs of smoke heavily in my direction, they could use my clothes as an ashtray, or other possible things.

I'm not saying that all smokers are bad people, it's just that they're people that aren't determined enough, don't care about their help, and/or are too stressed to concentrate on their own personal health. Though, from what I've seen, 75-90% of young (20-) smokers ARE bad people, but that probably relates to how they're doing it illegally, thus have a higher chance of doing other stuff illegally, too, making them generally bad.

A few months ago I made a spritecomic about what happens just before Super Mario World. It mainly revolves around Yoshi, and how he eventually got trapped and had to wait for Mario to save him. There's a slight chance I might eventually make more, but I'm just not all that sure how I'd do it. I don't want to go through every level individually, but I don't want them to go so quickly that the reader will be all, "WTFZ???"

Anyways, here's the comic. It ends off when Mario jumps on Yoshi for the first time.

Thanks. I take pride in the overworld sprites.

I know the text is overdone, I don't really see how much of that could be spoilers (also seeing as the game's about 15 years old...), and I think that's actually a witch's eye or something that's glowing and flying around the castle. (Likely another Magikoopa)

I was trying to get it to seem like something that could go officially with the story.

I have to be the WORST hacker you'll ever see. I know pretty much none of the terms used and here's my predicament:

I've checked smwcentral. I've checked LM's help file. I've searched all across the board, and I've been unable to find a nice, quick answer. I need to know how to get a certain set of tiles to use a different palette. Not how to change which colors within the same it uses, how to get it to actually use another one that's already there. I've just changed "Nintendo Presents" into "Mike O'Shay Presents" in this hack I'm working on, I changed around the font, I've changed around the colors, and I want it to be light red and dark red.
I selected the colors. It shows perfectly and there are no problems, but the colors of the text are light brown and dark brown in the ROM. I've found which palette it's using in the ROM, but I'm at a COMPLETE loss as for how to change it.

This will likely be modded for "ur r t3h idiot b7" (note: I'm not calling the mods n00bs, you guys kick ass, in fact. ), but I've just pretty much given up. I don't know if I need to change it to a custom palette or what, but I've looked at the already placed choices and have selected colors that SHOULD work, if I can change the palette to the one I want. If I do this without asking at the board, it will likely either ruin my ROM (don't worry, I've got about a dozen backups) or will mess up the colors for everything else.

We all know begging sucks and I'm really lame for doing so, but I SERIOUSLY need help with this. Please... someone tell me how to change a small set of tiles so that they're on a different palette, without ruining them all...

Do you get that when you try to open it up in Lunar Magic, after the ROM is patched?

I'm ENTIRELY on your side, Skydude. It should be as illegal as possible. Someone in their teens is smoking a joint? They should get charges pressed all 'round! The only drugs I have ever taken or WILL ever take are: Pain/Cold/Stuffy-nose pills, prescribed medicines (for rashes, etc.), flu shots, shots my school makes all grade nines take, etc., caffiene (usually in beverages I'm mainly drinking for the taste, I actually prefer decaffinated drinks, only with caffiene when I'm very, VERY asleep in the middle of the day and my friend wants me to try something (only ever happened once or twice)), and when I reach legal age, I'll likely have alcohol every once in a while, but even that in moderation.

IF it is ever made legal, then it should have even stricter laws than smoking and alcohol combined. You'd only be able to buy it at certain stores, smoke it a certain times of the day, only be able to do it inside a private residence (and if you're doing it anywhere aside from your own home, you need that person's permission), and need a minimum age the same as that of smoking, if not higher.

I could keep rambling on, but it's just past midnight and my parents'll probably get pissed since I'm still on my computer.

Okay, thanks for the tip. I'll probably end up just leaving the colors as they are. It actually still looks pretty good, though I'd eventually want to get the colors changed.

I guess I'll just have to wait until I'm more experienced.

Whoa. I just checked the game. I guess that somehow bowser's arms (or at least, what I THINK they are... they're stuck up in a weird way) were somehow parts of a witch, or something.

No matter, I can fix that comic in a matter of seconds. There we go! I've edited the first post and fixed the comic.

Thanks a lot! I'll also take your suggestion for a Hex Editor. I had one before, but it was a trial thing which has run out.

I'll see if it works!

[Edit 2:] It didn't quite look as good as I'd hoped, so I did some fooling around with the Hex Editor and found one that I think looked good. Thanks for all the help!

Thanks. I was trying to fit in lots of Bowser's minions in there to steal the eggs in different ways.

Odd though, I don't quite recall having LM at the time of making the comics, but I must have, or else the translucent bridge and levels wouldn't be showing. Well, I definitely know that about 1/3 of the screens there are actual screenshots I took directly from the game, after I disabled the status bar layer on ZSNES. (pressing 3) I remember how much trouble I had and how many times I had to use the rewind function to get the perfect screens for those. (Kinda like my hack and the amount of times I had to go through to try and get the opening video right. Don't you hate how the recorder messes up the sprite-locations a tiny bit, but just enough that it doesn't end up looking like you'd hope?)

Well, now that that's all fixed up and I've also cleared up my confusion about the backgrounds (I just didn't read the helpfile close enough for that one, but I eventually got it ), I've just got one more major question, in the hopes that this topic hasn't been completely forgotten about: I've also checked around the helpfile, searched the board, searched online, asked friends who might know, and I even looked through another two hacks to try and find it, but I need to know:

How can you set it so that going through the bottom of a level can lead you to another level? I want to be able to make it so that this level I have (which is essentially two ledges and a small pool of water) will move you to another level (an underwater one) when you swim down, into the bottom of the water. I've seen it in other hacks (but, unfortunately, those all seem to be locked... ) and think it would make my hack better if I'd be able to do that.

Thanks again. I'll try and take it from there.

[EDIT:] It worked perfectly! Now I know how other hackers did it. I'm sure I'll get shot in the face if I ask ANOTHER question, but I'm afraid I have to. I added the block and selected the colors, which was fine, as I was trying to get it to blend in with the water. But now I want do add another special block and I need to know if it's possible to add your own 8x8 tiles. I know it's possible to edit them, I just don't know how to add my own. I checked around, didn't find a proper answer for it, am still really clueless.

By the way. asdf, you're a GOD. (Yeah. You're that helpful.)

I think it's a great idea! You could change around the little triangular "run up the wall" block so it blends in with the walls better, and Mario would look as if he were actually running up it, ninja-style.

I feel like getting confused. Post your most puzzling brain-teasers and I'll try and answer them. If they're unsolvable, I'll say why and if they're paradoxes, I'll also explain why.

Try and make them as descriptive as you can, I'll try and find any way around one.

Since this is the actual Brain-Teaser board (it was moved and this is edited), I guess I should be more specific. I'm looking for logic or number-based brain teasers, such as "Brothers and sisters I have none, but this man's father is my father's son." (Answer: "This man" is my son. This one was stolen from The Simpsons.) I'd prefer if they rhymed, too. I want ones where I need to explain a scenario or something. Kinda hard to explain what I'm looking for, but you should be able to find some.

If I'm completely stumped and you're able to answer it after I tell you I can't, then you get a point. First to five points wins!
