What is palette shift's purpose? I'm having an issue with location 01C at the moment. Originally, its map and events corresponded to the towers between Guardia Dungeon and the rest of the castle. We turned it into a bridge. I'm attempting to give it the right palette and tileset again on the new ROM I've created by importing information from the old one.

I can change everything normally except Palette Shift, which has a value of 1 on the old CE rom. Changing from 0 to 1 in the new rom is causing it to sort of freeze; it states that it is "Drawing tiles" at the bottom left. Occasionally, another message will flash down there, but it'll go back to Drawing Tiles before I can make out what it says. It continues in this loop until I terminate the program.

I think I'm just copying addresses and not physical data right now. What hex editor would you recommend? I went ahead and got Hex Workshop, and I simply copied everything from 361C00 to 361DFF and pasted it. It's all the same of course; what do I need to do to copy the actual data contained in this range?

Take that, you damn machine!

The ROM is NO MATCH for JLukas, Temporal Flux and my many attempts! I believe we've finally got a corruption-free rom now. Everything's in working order, and thanks to JLukas's patch, all location data and scroll masks are operating perfectly.

A couple things remain to be done on this end before the CE ROM is back up to speed, such as the copying of strings to the new rom. Nonetheless, import and export is perfect. We have triumphed today!

Time to make 5 backups, including a dump to a cartridge that I'll keep in a safe.

~

Here's the latest:

Something in the strings is ruining the 1000 A.D. tileset.

I have a backup of the ROM after everything has been imported and JLukas's location patch has been applied; it's fine. The process I'm using to copy the strings involves having two Temporal Flux windows open; one has the old rom loaded, and one has the new. I'm simply going through events simultaneously, copying strings from one and pasting them in their appropriate place in the other. The strings on the new ROM look like, "TRS
{Ayla}T{Epoch}{Epoch}{Epoch}inlatetee the {null}" and so on.

I made a backup as soon as I finished Truce Couple residence; this backup had the tileset corruption. I'm about to go through and repeat my actions to see where the problem kicks in. If I can't duplicate the corruption, I'm going to break something.

Damn, I wasn't able to recreate the corruption of 1000 A.D.'s tileset. I'm not going to use this method anymore, since it did cause problems earlier at least.

So I should go back to the old events, hit update on all the strings, and re-export them and import them again?

Hey guys, I'm going to go ahead and put this in rom hacking since JLukas did undertake a good portion of it to extrapolate the Japanese script. The retranslation doesn't really involve rom hacking, I guess, but...guess it's rooted in it or something.

~

For over a decade, American fans of Chrono Trigger have wondered how the game originally appeared in Japan. While Ted Woolsey did a fantastic job making Trigger accessible to English-speaking audiences, some text was cut and altered according to Nintendo of America's censor standards. Today, thanks to JLukas, I am able to present to you the Japanese script of Chrono Trigger! It is saved in Unicode format and contains every text string from the original game. It is currently divided up into string blocks as they are stored in the game.

Download the Script

But there's one problem, of course: it's in Japanese! To penetrate the mysteries contained in the original script, the Chrono Compendium is launching its own Chrono Trigger Retranslation. It will tentatively be accomplished by fans of the games who know Japanese; these contributing translators can come and go as they wish, doing as little or much as they desire. We will make every effort to involve great linguistic talent with the project; soon, we hope to present you a fully retranslated script. If you know anyone who would be interested in helping translate, please let them know about the project or have them e-mail Zeality@gmail.com. We need your assistance; we appreciate it!

Yeah, I realize. CT has already been translated, and it's already being retranslated by RPGOne. However, RPGOne plans to do Dragon Quest 3 before Chrono Trigger, and on top of that, its main programmer and translator is currently going through a rough time. We're going to go ahead and take the bull by the horns. We've got about 3 volunteers from OCR, 2 from this thread, and 1 at the Compendium already, in addition to about 2 people who said they could help if things got desperate. I'm just floored by the contributions! I thought it'd be like, we'd only have one guy working at a time, and there would be periods of drought. But looks like it'll work!

Those countless Mario hacks gave me an idea. Can the database tabulate how many views or downloads a certain rom hack gets, and then allow a visitor to view a descending list of rom hacks with the most views? This could be one way of separating popular or good rom hacks from a sea of other old entries. The other alternative would be a rating system, but I don't think many people are going to stop and take the time to rate a rom hack; they are there just to d/l it.

Well, do keep in mind that our first objective is to fact-find and make a retranslated script. For an actual rom hack, the script can be edited to be more presentable and in line with community desires. So the first result is not necessarily the final.

I wish I could promote it more...I've been immersing myself in the Chrono Cross encyclopedia at present, so I haven't even followed up on asking a few fansub groups if they have any Trigger fans in the ranks (someone gave me the name of one and advised me to do this). But with the Cross encyclopedia, the huge foundation of my site will finally be done.

Oh, that's fine. Right now, some things are coming out with romaji. Before we release the script, Find & Replace can remedy the names. I don't see any real value in keeping Engrish, so we'll take care of it. The things that are actually different in the Japanese will, as you suggested, be annotated in a section preceding the script.

Yeah, that's how the new script will be painstakingly organized. It'll be like:

~

Long before you were born...
...there was a kingdom where magic
flourished.
Everyone there could use it!

But in time, people began to abuse
their powers. It got so bad that no
one was allowed to use magic except
wizards.

おめーらの生まれるずっと昔…… 魔法でさかえた王国、あった。その世界、みんな魔法使った。
  けどその王国、魔力におぼれほろびた……。
  それから人は魔法を使えなくなった。魔族以外はな。

A zillion years before you brats were born... There was a kingdom where magic thrived.
In that world, everybody could use it.
But that kingdom drowned in its own power...
Since then, people haven't been able to use magic. Well, except for the Mystics, right?

~

We're still debating exactly the best way to format this system, since it can get a little out of hand (considering every line in the game will be accented by its original Japanese and a translated line, effectively bloating the script three times its size).

This is a shot in the dark, but is there any utility akin to that FF7 exporation problem that lets one view models in PSX games? I'm about to scan a bunch of enemies and character models from a Chrono Cross player's guide to complete my site's encyclopedia, but it'd be much better if I could simply view them directly on the comp. Chances may be slim, but I must ask beforehand just in case.

I'm not sure if Deus is registered here; if so, sorry for possibly stealing the spotlight by posting this myself.

From el Compendium:

For the last several hours, Deus has been working on his savestate editor for Chrono Cross, which makes use of saves created by the ePSXe emulator. It is now ready to release, and can edit character names, stats, star count, gold amount, equipment (both equipped and in inventory), and Elements in inventory. Deus has noted that in the near future, the ability to edit Elements equipped may be added, which could allow for some interesting Element Grids. Additionally, this means you can also circumvent the game's restriction on naming Serge "Crono" (though why you would do that is beyond me!). The editor utilizes the Python programming language to run in combination with the wxPython extension, and as a result is cross compatible between operating systems. However, if you haven't already installed Python and wxPython, you will need to do so.

Download the editor here. Additionally, quick installation files for Python and wxPython can be found here (Microsoft installer) and here (executable) respectively. Have fun!

Just be careful. The advice "Tell her how you feel" is given out a little too often, and it's dangerous. At the wrong stage, it can be the creepiest fucking thing you can do. There is a game of friendship and relationship building that comes before things get serious, and telling her how you feel at early stage is blowing your cover and game. No, I don't mean that you can't be sincere, or that dating is some kind of manipulation. But sadly, there are rules of attraction; you have to feel it out until the time is right. I made the mistake of writing some love poem and putting it in a girl's locker, and it accomplished nothing. Had I actually gotten to know her, become friends, and generally been sociable and happy for the sake of happiness and fun, things would have happened.

I was into it for a while, but then the general taste of the show put me off. It's a sad little metropolis filled with a bunch of losers, and the Major is an invincible, cold archetype of a character with little growth or interesting qualities and conflicts. Batou is somewhat interesting, though. But really, the show is like one giant depressive trip. I guess someone had to make a vision of the future like that so that humanity can know what to avoid.

Yeah, yeah, here it is. Straight from the Compendium:

~

Bet you weren't expecting this one! The Chrono Trigger: Crimson Echoes project is releasing its second demo! Three chapters of the game are now playable (versus the simple prologue of the last game), featuring new areas, scenes, events, characters and story as the rich world of Crimson Echoes unfolds. Nearly every era is accessible, and a host of other surprises await. I'm really reluctant to reveal much more, as you must experience it for yourself! At a minimum, the demo will last 30-40 minutes; at maximum, if you talk to all the NPCs and immerse yourself in the world of the game, it can last up to 3 hours or more. This is truly a new Chrono Trigger adventure; if you'd like to follow the team on another mission through time, jack in and download the patch! The instructions for playing are in the Readme. Below are screenshots (click to view) and the link to the patch and feedback thread. Stay tuned for an interview in a couple weeks.

Yes, when I started out making Crimson Echoes, I thought it'd be relatively easy to emulate Chrono Trigger's pace. It wasn't until a few months ago that I realized that paid professionals made the first game, and that we're just a bunch of fans with no experience in constructing these things. So I think the patch may be a little rough, and the text a little heavy. It doesn't help that the plot of the game is now in question, while we wait for someone to finish scenario writing. But hopefully the second demo will be really enjoyable notwithstanding the inexperience of its architects.
