I went through the efforts of partitioning a drive on this computer, and installing Linux on it. It'll boot to the command line. But, the X server apparently doesn't seem to recognize either my video card or monitor(s), I'm not sure which is the case. Using dkpg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86, to select the driver called 'VGA' and 8-bit color will at least get me into a desktop. It was GNOME the last time I tried. However... 320x240 resolution with 8-bit color and having the upper half of the screen blank even though my mouse will navigate there isn't exactly usable! I'll list possible relevant aspects of the computer.
Distro: Debian 3.1r3 i386, from the full two DVD set. Video: XFX GeForce 6800XT AGP Monitor 1: Dell D1226H 19" CRT Monitor 2: eMachines E15T4 15" LCD CPU: AMD Athlon XP 2500+ 1.8ghz, overclocked at 2.2ghz RAM: 1GB DDR 400MHZ And yes, I do have the root password written down. I can also install a Windows ext3 driver to check for log files if some might exist. |

| I managed to get things set up correctly. My problem was that the video card isn't supported by many distros yet. Ubuntu and Fedora Core didn't like it either, so I gave SUSE a chance and now have 3D acceleration after installing the drivers. None of them had issues in Virtual PC, that's how I realized what to do. Even mouse wheel scrolling is a lot more responsive with hardware rendering. Thanks. | |||

| Maybe instructions on how to make the kind of links that show just the words, like this one? I often forget. | |||

| It appears I have a bunch of files which show up in Windows Explorer, but the MFT doesn't contain their entries or something. A quick scan with RootkitRevealer shows them. I've attached the log for advice on removal. Simple as that! |

| Like one of them has the name SQLPRSE.DLL which contains invalid characters. I get "cannot read from the source file or disk" even though the file has been there for months. According to that log there is a similar file in the same directory named SQLPARSE.DLL that does not appear in the Windows Explorer.
Unfortunately RootkitRevealer mainly finds problems, it doesn't repair most itself. The weirdest one is at the very bottom. There's a CABIULRB. file which has no similar file elsewhere and as you can see it's name is invalid since names can't end with a dot. It also says "cannot read from the source file or disk". About the shortcuts... I was moving items around in the Start Menu. They appear and work correctly at their new locations, so that means Windows XP doesn't clean up changes to the file system 100%. I should also mention my hard drives are formatted NTFS. Edit: My computer indeed does not allow dots on the end of file names. If I attempt to say, make a file called "Taxes.......", it will come out as "Taxes". This occurs whether or not there are dots elsewhere in the name. It also doesn't allow me to save or create a file whose name is nothing but dots. (edited by theclaw on 12-22-06 04:07 AM) |

| Best
--- 1. Mega Man Powered Up (PSP) - As some of you know from an earlier post, my new PSP is unable to read memory cards despite Windows having no issue with them, meaning it likely needs repair. But I still enjoy this game the best I can. It is excellent. Classic gameplay, superb graphics and framerate, I've also always liked the soundtrack in most Mega Man titles. 2. Zelda: Twilight Princess (Gamecube) - I can't find a Wii console in stock anywhere around here so I had to get the other version. What I especially like to do when playing this game is finding similarities to The Wind Waker. So far I've noticed the way grass is rendered and behaves, plus many sound effects such as that for collected rupees and the explosion when normal enemies are killed. 3. Prey (Xbox 360) - For someone who doesn't like tactical or stealth shooters, discovering a game with this breed of outright action is simply awesome. Nothing beats blazing through aliens in a sci-fi atmosphere. 4. Elder Scrolls: Oblivion (PC) - Yes, it does get rather bad framerates. An upgrade from a 2.2ghz Athlon XP and 6800XT to a 2.2ghz Athlon 64 and 7600GTS didn't help much. Without a playable demo being released for any platform, I unfortunately had to 'acquire' the game. I'm still very near the beginning yet have been impressed though it runs a little slow at times. What's really cool is how much variety in gameplay it has. Fight using melee as your primary weapon, nuke and terrorize everyone with magic spells, or go FPS-style and use arrows. Worst --- 1. Disgaea 2 (PS2) - I did consider it one of the best games ever for the first 50+ hours. But... The ending and final boss were so pointless that it completely ruined everything. Not to spoil, however it's end was just awful. Having my characters reach the credits when they are that far from the level cap is not right either. Ironically, these problems also occured several years ago in Castlevania Symphony of the Night! Luckily killing monsters in that game was entertaining enough to make it still excellent unlike Disgaea 2 where combat not relevant to the plot quickly turns into a snoozefest. 2. Kirby Squeak Squad - This is tough for me to list here. It was definately fun to play. The graphics are vibrant as usual. Typical nice upbeat soundtrack. Many hidden items. Now what makes the benefits of it hard to swallow is being far too short. I supposed being the fourth game to use it's engine may be a possible downside as well, loving it as I do. Recycling GBA code is not needed anymore now that DS devkits have been out long enough. Metroid Prime Hunters was a technical marvel, in fact rivaling the legendary Quake III with both it's audiovisual splendor and gameplay on all fronts including multiplayer. |

| You should have seen my stuff. Got something called Scooby Doo Who's Watching Who for DS, and replaced the PSP system with a fully working one. Best of all... I was given literally stacks of PC games (plus a very small amount of other discs) for free. Just a sample:
The Movies, The Godfather The Game, Star Wars Battlefront II, Project Snowblind, Faces of War, Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter, Quake 4, Call of Duty 2, Brothers in Arms Road to Hill 30, Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell Espionage Pack, two copies of Cold Fear, Brothers in Arms Earned in Blood... The only movie there is a DVD of Collateral Damage starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. And yes, there were also AOL discs which I don't need. I'll post a picture if I can find my camera. It is an awesome sight! That list isn't even a fifth of what's there!
Oh yeah, and there were Xbox games in the collection. Far Cry Evolution, Black, From Russia With Love, Cold War, Rainbow Six Lockdown, Call of Duty 2 Big Red One, Big Bumpin', Fuzion Frenzy, Pocket Bike Racer, and 5 demo discs which normally ship inside the Xbox magazine. | Yeah, Eyetoy Monkey Mania for PS2 came out only in Japan and Europe.
It's mainly PC games which reach EU countries yet not US however. Sega has done that a lot, with titles like Crazy Taxi 3, Billy Hatcher, and Sonic Adventure DX. Taito Legends 2 so far appears to be vaporware also.
Did I mention the PC version of Mega Man X8 is amazing? Excellent game! It even supports the rarely-offered option to use controller rumble. But, still never reached US shelves (digital distribution only there)... I should get more PSP games now that I have a system that can save progress on my memory cards correctly. Of course, being now able to use NES, SNES, and Genesis emulation is alright too. I thank the photo exploit for allowing homebrew with a 2.6 unit. I'm pretty sure that GTA one was removed from 'Greatest Hits' discs like mine. |

Tried that custom version yet? It's incredible. I mean, running PSone Final Fantasy games is good (I have my Final Fantasy VII listed on eBay), but having the all-time favorite Mega Man X4 at full speed with sound on a handheld? Pic. I've played it on PS1, PS2, PC, and PSP. Though, not the Saturn one yet or likely ever. I'm planning to get rid of that system.
I needed to go from 2.6>2.71>1.5>3.02 OE-A>3.02 OE-B to use the upgrade. Not many PSone games will fit on a 1GB stick, so I often run NES and SNES instead. The 128MB stick is for retail UMD save files. What's cool is that Pokemon Gold will save on PSP. The emulators on GBA and DS I've tried so far lack it's savetype. Maverick Hunter X plays very similar to X8, it also has the same sound effects for nearly everything. Then again... That's rather commonly done. Meh. I didn't like the new capsule placements. They're in odd places, although the original X1 had those such as the leg part which were strange too. And for Advent Children, I decided to get a UMD. Wasn't keen on a Japanese-only DVD (the US one is scarce locally, like SNK-published games and anything Castlevania related tend to be around here) or downloading it. Nice art direction and soundtrack. The plot didn't make sense, as I just got halfway through FFVII last year and it's save file went corrupt, the other saves on that card are fine however. |

The near-total lack of wrestling and boxing games on DS, even in Japan, is mainly what has annoyed me. Knowing full well it could handle titles such as No Mercy with or without online play only makes it harder to bear. I'll be satisfied if I succeed in having a PSone wrestling game run. Edit: It would appear to be that no loader software or a UMD in the slot is needed for at least this ISO. I moved the loader back to the hard drive, and that game still runs from Memory Stick in the XMB's Game menu.. (edited by theclaw on 01-04-07 09:04 AM) |

| Didn't Nintendo themselves say it was difficult to translate? I think the Gamecube version has a much better font than the DS one. | |||

| 1- Translate Panel de Pon into English.
And my ultimate ROM hacking desire: 2- Indentify the graphics compression format of Mega Man VII on SNES, making me able to extract its foreground and background tiles for use in my SMW hack. |

| Sadly, no. Graphics from this game's save states don't show up correctly in the tile editor with any setting and it can't find a palette either. Look here. The Mega Man X 1-3 compression format is known to the overall ROM community, Mega Man VII's is not. Google has no information on this, I also have only found X 1-3 tiles in other SMW hacks, not VII tiles. | |||

| Developers, quit it with the 2D games. This is just the sort of thing which has made me rarely use a DS anymore. I haven't played Maple Story myself, but MMORPGs are so boring... Ugh.
Why is there not a single boxing or wrestling game for DS? That's the worst part. |

Yeah, I know. I've been working on SMW since 2001. And... I have good news. The game finally has a plot. It will be a direct sequel to the original SMW. Some levels therefore do use bits and pieces from previous ones, yet rearranged. I've given the overworld new palettes for two reasons. One is how an total redesign would go against this hack's theme, the other being I found path editing too complex for my taste.
Quoted from the readme I made: "A certain group of Mario Bros have rescued their friends and defeated many enemies invading the island paradise as well. People's lives return to normal then, or do they? Bowser not only captures the princess again, he also has begun to demolish the entire Dinosaur Land region to build his new base meant for conquest on. When news of these events spread, Mario and Luigi set foot on the land they visited not too long ago. They must hurry with your help to save this island! Unknown to the heroes is Bowser's early-in-development, yet heavily kept secret plans for outer space..." It is condensed in-game due to size limitations. As always, the hack will remain unlocked. 1: This isn't a screenshot per se. I'm testing ExGFX here. Shade Man BG with Gravity Beetle FG. 2: Title screen. Those fake Mario sprites are an All-Stars rip I created. The animation of Mario himself has not been changed so far. 3: Updated opening logo. Notice I've now shaded it with color for more detail. 4: The moon? Sort of. It's an entirely hand-made tileset. You'll be very suprised to find out where this area is found... 5: Throwable pipes. Left scrolling levels are fairly rare in SMW hacks. 6: Nothing special here, though sea urchins along with Bowser statues is rather unusual. 7: Does this seem familar? Look at the background too. It has those vertical level 'garbage' tiles when you first start, but they go away once a certain pipe is entered. It's quite neat to see in action how I achieved that. | 1: I can copy it's correct palette from a screenshot of MMX3.
2: Truth be told, the SMW title logo is rather jumbled up in the 8x8 editor. With a small guide showing which tile was used where on that logo I'd be able to improve it. OK, I'll experiment with recording a new animation. 3: Hmm... Anyone know what palette the intro screen uses? 4: I changed the yellow to red, and light blue to a darker blue. It looks better. Now water looks like water, lava like lava, as they should be. 5: Maybe that level is too complicated. I get frustrated myself playing it unless I fly over the part shown there. 6: I'll work on the enemies. That fireball does move in the same pattern as those sea urchins anyway. 7: No problem. That's simple to fix. Thanks. If I see things I'm not certain about, I'll show them. |

| Hmm, OK.
SNES Chrono Trigger Castlevania Dracula X Tetris Attack Kirby no kira kizzu (If I have the name right, it's the Japanese sequel to Kirby's Star Stacker on GB.) Gradius III Wario's Woods GBA Fire Emblem (FE6 has a translation patch. FE7 is one of the greatest ever. FE8, well, I just couldn't get into it at all.) Metal Slug Advance Legend of Zelda Minish Cap Bubble Bobble Old & New Wario Ware Mega Microgames Super Robot Taisen Original Generation 1-2 Boulder Dash EX Puyo Pop Fever (Play. This. Now. It's excellent on any of the multiple platforms.) Advance Wars 1-2 |

| Geez. Can't PSP already emulate the PSone, NES, GBA, and Wonderswan versions of these at full speed with sound and saving? It's too bad Zelda The Minish Cap randomly loses it's saved progress when run on PSP...
Oh well, Final Fantasy games are simply TOO DIFFICULT. I've played nearly everything but FFlegend 1-3. Never do get far in them because the monsters or bosses get outrageous far earlier in the games then they should. Final and secret enemies being next to impossible is OK, this isn't. |

| Did anyone else notice that timed lifts, like those in the first picture, will float on lava? I haven't tried it with water or sloped lava.
Looks as if the author of this hack enjoys spikes. I've been too busy working on my own hack to start downloading and playing more of them though. Who says hacks need to be locked? I didn't do so. |
