Welcome to the Red-Blue-Green Game!

Anyone is free to guess. This game will have three teams, Red, Blue, and Green, but the teams will be formed as we go: Whenever someone new gets a question right, they will be placed on the team with the lowest score.

(This should keep the game fairly even - the lowest team has the help of everyone on the board. If there is a tie for what team has the lowest score, I’ll flip a coin or something. You’ll just have to trust me there!)

-There will be rounds consisting of 20 questions, riddles, brain teasers, logic puzzles, or anything else of that sort. Questions will be worth anywhere from 1 to 10 points. You may have seen some questions before - It's hard to find original riddles.

-Each player will have their own individual score.

-One guess, per question, per player at a time. Until I say that your answer is wrong, don't make another guess on the same question.

-Each team will have an overall score, which is the sum of the scores of the team members.

-There will be an overall individual winner, a winning team, and individual winners within each team.

-The person with the highest score on a team at the end of a round becomes the team leader. The team leader may give the team a custom name, and may get to make decisions for the rest of the team, in the future.

-There may be ways to wager points in the future (the team leader will not be able to wager your points away, so don’t worry about that.)

-I’ll check this thread regularly, but don’t get mad if I miss a day or two without notice.

And all that said, let’s go!
-----------------------------------------------------------
ROUND ONE!

Question #1

The word 'FACETIOUSLY' contains the six vowels, A-E-I-O-U and Y, in their alphabetical order.

What other English word does the same? 7 pts.
Solved by Jagori of Blue!

Question #2

I am the center of gravity, hold a capital situation in Vienna, and as I am foremost in every victory, am allowed by all to be invaluable. Though I am invisible, I am clearly seen in the midst of a river. I could name three who are in love with me and have three associates in vice. It is vain that you seek me for I have long been in heaven yet even now lie embalmed in the grave.

What am I? 4 pts.

Two husbands, with their two wives;
Two fathers, with their two daughters;
Two mothers, with their two sons;
Two maidens, with their two mothers;
Two sisters, with their two brothers;
Yet only six in all lie buried here;
All born legitimate, from incest clear.

How is everyone related? 9 pts.
Solved by Jagori of Blue!

Question #4

This is an unusual day, and so is this paragraph. How quickly can you find out what is so uncommon about it? It looks so ordinary that you may think nothing is odd about it until you match it with most paragraphs this long. If you put your mind to it, and study it, you will find out, but nobody may assist you. Do it without any coaching. Go to work and try your skill at figuring it out. Par on it is about half an hour. Good Luck!

What is so uncommon about it? 5 pts.
Solved by Light PKMN of Red!

Question #5

I said that that that that that man wrote should have been underlined

How should the above be correctly punctuated? 7 pts.

Because nearly all the questions were answered in the first post last time, I'm going to implement a new rule:

Pay attention, here comes the rule!

Only one answer per post, from now on. This means that you will have to wait until another person has time to take a guess in their own post, and THEN you can post another answer for a different question. Also remember not to take multiple guesses for the same question. If you edit an answer, I will make note of the time, and treat it as though you had posted that entire answer at that time, so be careful.

And concerning your latest answers:

Kamek77:
5. No, not right
6. Correct +4
7. Right +5
8. Yeah, you got it +10
You are now on the Green team!
You earned 19 pts. for the Green team!

Koneko:
3. Nope, the abbey or community doesn't work

KATW:
5. No, you ended the quote too soon

Riku:
8. No, 9 can't be the only one true, because if 9 is true, then so are 1 thru 8

Jagori:
5. You got it +7
3. Your old answer was right, and step-daughters don't count. From now on, try to only give one answer per question. +9
You earned 16 pts. for the Blue team!

TEAM RANKINGS:

1st - BLUE TEAM Total pts: 23

Kamek77 - 19

3rd - RED TEAM Total pts: 9

Question #9:

Always falling, always flying -
Always balanced in this fashion.
Always facing toward its partner -
Silent, quiet, void of passion.

What is it? 7 pts.

Question #10:

People who have it don't tell. People who get it don't know. People who find out they have it don't want it.

What is it? 8 pts.

Question #11:

A train left on time for its one hour journey and it arrived 5 minutes late. A passenger's watch showed it to be 3 minutes early, so he adjusted his watch by putting it forward 3 minutes. His watch kept time during the day, and on the return journey in the evening the train started on time, according to his watch, and arrived on time, according to the station clock. The train traveled 25 percent faster on the return journey than it did on the morning journey.

Was the station clock fast or slow, and by how much? 6 pts.

(And for those of you that didn't bother to read the top of this post:
Only one answer per post!!!)

And that's all for now...

What is it? 5 pts.

Question #16

You have 9 tennis balls and 4 shopping bags.

How can you put all the balls in the bags so that there is an odd number of balls in each bag? 6 pts.

Question #17

A common English word will describe a thing as not being found in any place, and yet with no changes to the word other than an added space, will describe that thing as being present at this very moment.

What is the word? 5 pts.

Question #18

There is a concert that starts in 17 minutes and four people must all cross a bridge to get there. All four begin on the same side of the bridge. It is night, and there is one flashlight. A maximum of two people can cross at one time. Any party who crosses, either 1 or 2 people, must have the flashlight with them. The flashlight must be walked back and forth, it cannot be thrown, etc. Each band member walks at a different speed. A pair must walk together at the rate of the slower one's pace:

Leo: - 1 minute to cross
Don: - 2 minutes to cross
Mike: - 5 minutes to cross
Raph: - 10 minutes to cross

How can everyone get to the other side of the bridge? 9 pts.

Question #19

You were given two bottles of pills, one labeled "Bottle A" and one labeled "Bottle B". The pills in these bottles are identical, except that if you take the wrong amount of either one you will die. You must take one of each pill each day, and no extra, or you will die. You already have a pill from bottle A in your hand, but when you try to get a pill from bottle B, two B pills spill out into your hand with the A pill and you lose track of which pills are which. You can't just throw the three pills away and get new ones because you have to take every last one eventually. You can't get more.

What can you do to survive? 9 pts.

Question #20

Bill bets Ted a week's salary that he can drink two large mugs full of beer before Ted can drink one small shot glass full. The conditions are that neither man can touch or move the other one's mugs/glass, and Ted can't start drinking from his shot glass until Bill finishes his first mug and sits it on the table. Bill can't start drinking his second mug until he finishes his first one, and sits it on the table. Since Ted is the faster drinker, and he appears to have a clear advantage in the contest, he happily accepts the wager. After the men complete this contest however, Ted owes Bill a week's salary.

How did this happen? 7 pts.

Remember, only one answer per post, but you can try to answer another, different question as soon as you can post again.

These are all of the questions in Round 1, so after these are all answered, the players with the highest scores on each team will become Team Leaders, and they'll get to give their team a nickname.

Just to clarify, when I say, "don't make more than one guess on the same problem," I mean that a single person shouldn't try the same question again before I dismiss their last answer for that specific question. I don't mean that no one should try to guess that question again before then, just that one person.

Go at it, you've got lots of questions to choose from!

Posted on 12-20-05 06:14 PM, in So... How do I create a *working* stripped ROM? Link
I've been messing with FCEUXD (SP 1.06 to be precise, but I don't guess it matters) and tried to create a stripped ROM of just the Zelda 2 title screen, with the sword and scrolling introduction. I allowed the Code/Data Logger to log as much as it could, and made sure to hit power and reset during the logging, but when I create the stripped ROM and load it, it only loads a grey screen and does nothing else. Although at first I was just playing around, now this bugs me because I obviously don't understand exactly how this feature works.

Could someone explain what else I need to do, if I want to create a *working* stripped NES ROM?

Are they even supposed to run right after you create them, without any further modification?

(Ugh... well, sorry for the mess above. I've added periods to space it out and make it as readable as I can.) This is from a trace (via geiger's snes9x debug) of the code from Zelda 3, but there is something about this particular portion of the code that I don't understand:

The first instruction, SEC, sets the carry bit. The accumulator contains the value #$008C, and the next instruction is SBC - subtract from accumulator with carry. So, why, I'm asking, has the value in the accumulator not changed in the next instruction? With the carry bit set, shouldn't the accumulator decreased by at least one?

I'm sure I'm understanding something wrong, but could someone please explain this to me?

Yeah, I'm fairly certain I didn't skip anything. This was taken from a trace, so I got it all at once. It would've been a huge mess to post the entire subroutine it comes out of, but I'm pretty sure that the value in $0004 is zero at the time of this instruction. Would the instruction ignore the carry if the value being subtracted is zero? I don't think it would, but that's all I can come up with at the moment.

This is the last instruction that wrote anything to $0004, when I scroll up a few lines in the trace. From what I can tell, it would have written #$00 to $0004, which would be what it tried to subtract from the accumulator in the instructions in my original post. When you add the carry, it should have subtracted one, the way I understand it.

OK, here's a pic of the entire subroutine:

-The top code in the blue box is the one where #$00 is written to $0004.
-The bottom code is the code in the original post.
-The yellow box shows where the accumulator didn't change.
-The yellow circle shows that the carry bit was set.

So... what's going on - why doesn't the accumulator change?

I checked the RAM during the instruction and $0004 contains #$00 when it executes. I also stepped through the instruction with BSNES's debugger and had the same result with the accumulator not changing.

Could the SBC instruction actually check the *negative* flag instead of the carry flag? Being subtraction, it might make sense that the negative flag would be checked instead. I may be way off base here, though - why would it be called 'Subtract with Carry', in that case? It might explain why the value isn't changing, though.

edit: no, after testing it, it doesn't look like it checks the negative flag. I'm quite confused.

EDIT: I figured it out!! The SBC instruction subtracts an additonal "1" whenever the carry flag is CLEAR, not when it's set. Three separate 65c816 references had it wrong.

Does anyone have Orochimaru's Perfect Guide to Hyrule Magic? I had it on my computer a long time ago, but I've reformated since then and can't seem to find it again. I've tried all the old download links I could find, but they're broken. Honestly, I think it would be great if someone would upload it to romhacking.net or here at acmlm.org, so we could all download it again if the author doesn't mind.

Yes, there is a lot of information in the guide which cannot be found on the forums or archives. A lot of it is 'how to' stuff, but the reason I was wanting to see it again was to compare their RAM-Map with the findings I've made recently.

I had the same problem a while back, and I ended up having to run the Zelda II editor in DOSbox, a DOS emulator. Just google it, you should easily be able to find it, but it may take a while to learn how to use DOSbox itself. Good luck.

This is just off the top of my head, but from what was said about the key 'bouncing', it may have something to do with the game assuming the key is in the belly of a Birdo whenever it is at a certain height above ground and is struck by an object.

That's pretty vague though, I realize.

I did click the link, because it was the first thing I saw, and I figured it was just a link to some thread where someone was threatening to 'delete the board' again. I do think it's kinda stupid, but I don't post that much anyway so it's not a big deal, and obviously I'm unbanned now.

I played through most of the first level - you may want to address the fact that Simon won't jump correctly when blocks are too low over his head. He awkwardly catches on them, causing him to lose all his velocity. Also, on a few different occasions, after getting hit by an enemy, I went *through* the bottom of these same blocks that are a bit too low and ended up on top of them.

That is a minor gripe though. From what I saw, it seemed alright, so keep it up.

Well, in that particular case, a simple change to the blocks might stop a player from being able to skip such a large chunk of the level.
For example: (I just edited your pic using paint)

I've never edited Castlevania, so I don't know if there's some strange reason why you couldn't do this. You can see that I got rid of the last block at the bottom, to keep the pitfall intact. I don't think it looks as good either, but it may fix the problem in this particular instance.
