Okay, as some of you might already know, for the last 7 months I've been in the army, protecting the fatherland against the evil russians... yeah, right.

The Garrison of South Varanger is located at the russian border, about as far away from civilication as you can possibly get while still keeping your feet on the norwegian mainland. This place is hyped up like crazy, and is supposedly the most popular garrison to serve at (even though my friends all pretty much said "Ouch, that sucks" in unison when they heard where I was going). Every single brochure, magazine, and other type of propaganda we recieved at the airport seemed to support this, even though they all pretty much had "great opportunities for hunting" as the only positive thing about the place? Don't like hunting? Sucks to be you.
This place is also the supposedly toughest garrison in Norway to serve at, another of those things that doesn't really make me the ideal soldier to send up there (yet the propaganda told me I had been hand picked for this. Appearantly by some blind guy, as even the doctor who examined me for a minute or so at the airport asked me if I actually wanted to go up there, and didn't seem very surprised when I told him this was the garrison I'd least want to serve at.
(On top of that, it's extremely cold up there, with temperatures below -50 Celsius at worst. Apparantly noone told the guy who hand picked me that I don't fuction in low temperature at all, and haven't been wearing skis for 5 or 6 years. In Norway, that means a lot)

After a month, soldiers could apply for transfer to the staff company, which is basically for soldiers who didnt want to, or didn't think they'd be able to, get transferred to the russian border (only 150 of roughly 300 soldiers will serve there). Naturally, I wrote an application, as the thought of sitting in a tower in the middle of nowhere staring at some trees for half a year honestly didnt appeal to me (though this served as a great laughing matter to a number of idiots when I told them that was the reason I didn't participate in an optional gas mask drill a week earlier. Blah.)

The Staff Company does a lot of administrative work, involving some creative computer work (website tinkering, I believe), running the garrison newspaper (read by more than 500 people monthly! or something), and so on. Seemed perfect for me.

...so I got kitchen duty. Since my experience in this field is limited to "put food in microwave, wait till done, eat", the decision to put me there was seemingly done by the same blind guy who decided to send me up there in the first place. Oh, and I had listed 4 (count them, FOUR) different positions I would like in my application letter to ensure transfer (which, in retrospective, was probably not needed at all). Still, I was given the position I wanted the least of all, which, by coincidence, was also unofficially considered the lowest position in the army (not by the kitchen staff, I guess, but whenever someone is transferred from guard duty for doing a subpar job, they end up in the kitchen. Every single one of them). Apparantly, since I can't do as many pushups as Muscle McHunterson, I must automatically suck at everything.

So I applied for a transfer to something, anything, other than kitchen duty. I wasn't doing a good job at the kitchen, I was perfectly aware of it, I knew my abilities would (not could, would) be put to better use elsewhere. I was assured that there would be transfers. Months passed, I applied again, and was told that
yes, there would be transfers. And there were transfers, yes, but no one were ever transferred away from the kitchen. Ever. After 4 applications for a transfer, and 5 months in the kitchen, the captain finally ordered me into his office, we had a short talk, and I was told that I would be transferred to the Education Department after my New Years Leave (I had to stay up there during Christmas. Yes, it sucked).

After returning from my leave, I went to the Education Department, where I was told that they only took in one soldier every half year, and the one position I would get had been filled months ago... which I kinda already knew, but since I was told that I would be transferred there, I thought things had been worked out. The case, however, was that the captain had basically sendt a note to the Education Department that I would be transferred there, and then taken a vacation. The Education Department had recieved the note, but had been unable to get their hands on neither him nor anyone else with any real power. So yeah, there I was, without a job. The Chief of Staff placed me in the position of.. uh, "Week Holder" (No, I don't know the english terms for all these army words, and you can't find them in any dictionary either. A Week Holder is pretty much a caretaker, who sits in his office all day playing Gameboy and reading comic books, since he's not allowed to leave the barracks, and he has pretty much no objectives to do other than handing out supplies to people who ask for them. This position is given to random soldiers, who keep it for a week, before returning to their former position).

After a month in this position, the Chief pretty much told me that he had been unable to find another position for me, and that I was to pack my bags. Yeah. I was sent to the garrison I wanted the least to serve at, got stuck in a position I wanted the least, actively tried to get a transfer, but kept getting ignored, then was thrown all over the place due to the shittiest communications system I've ever seen (you'd think that the person called "Boss" whould actually be in charge, but here we have a billion sub-bosses who can ignore pretty much anything the big boss tells them), and then sendt home since they couldn't "find" a position for me.
And what's going to happen now? I'll be stuck in a virtual limbo until summer, since I can't begin my studies until then. Fuck you, army system.

OoC: Hi.

In a rather small house right outside the Floatian palace, Adamant, the black mage with long purple hair, and his friend Goldor, the knight in brass armor, were enjoying themselves playing a friendly game of Galaga.

Adamant: Ha! 15360 points! Beat that, Goldie.
Goldor: That won't be too hard, since 15000 points is an extremely shitty score.
Adamant: Well, I suck at this game. It's not like you're any better.
Goldor: Pfft. I could beat that sorry excuse for a score blindfolded. Just gimme the joystick.

As Goldor grabbed the joystick and prepared to utterly crush what Adamant had called a "high" score, the TV screen suddenly went blank. The two gamers turned around, seeing secret government agent Miyamoto Maijin standing near the door, twirlling the power cord in his right hand.

Maijin: Game over, guys. We've got an international crisis on our hands. Someone recently swiped the Weatherdark, President Z's prepared to go medieval on the thief's ass, and someone should really tag along to make sure he doesn't blow up whatever city the thief's currently residing in.
Adamant: Yeah, I guess you're right. Goldor was losing anyway.
Goldor: You got 15000 points at Galaga! A retarded monkey could beat you at that game!
Maijin: 15000? Hah, you suck.
Adamant: I know, I know. So yeah, mission.
Goldor: I seem to recall you being the one who wanted to play Galaga in the first place as well.
Adamant: It's fun. Even if I suck at it. But mission, now.
Goldor: Hee hee, 15000 points.
Adamant: Mission!

(Z: Yeah, I'm back in Halden now. Full story here. Meh.)

Adamant: All right, so Evil SomerZ Stole the Whetherdark...
Maijin: Weatherdark.
Adamant: Weatherdark. Since he must've known we would figure out he was the culprit pretty soon, him letting himself be seen, and pretending to be you, I guess he needed something done quickly, in a place that can't be easily accessed in any other way. He's not stupid, and he knew he didn't have much time before we'd be on his trail, so he can't have been planning something complicated and time consuming, he knew he would be found shortly after leaving. Whatever he was planning on doing, he might've already finished.
Maijin: This is worse than I thought. While Evil SomerZ doesn't directly fall under my directive, him being on Earth is kind of your fault, and him stealing equipment from you and using them to wreak havoc is something that I will at least be held partially responsible for.
Adamant: So any ideas?
Maijin: Yeah, he's in outer space somewhere. Since he's appearantly trying to get some quick job finished before anyone gets on his trail, posing as the president and stealing the Weatherdark would be his only option. Stealing a ship from NASA would attract too much unwanted attention. But also, if he didn't need a specially constructed hard-to-steal craft like this, he wouldn't bother taking such a risk. This is Evil SomerZ we're talking about, not some two-but thug. He can easily get anywhere on Earth without any type of special transportation. Space is the only place he can be.
Adamant: Right. Then we have narrowed his location down to "somewhere in the universe, just not Earth".
Maijin: It's a beginning.

Get Activision Anthology. While I haven't tried the PS2 version, I do own the GBA game (it's really more suited as a handheld), and would go as far as to say it's the best game the system offers. A collection of 30+ Atari 2600 titles from a time when gameplay was what really counted in a game, this is a game you seriously can never get bored of. Activision produced some of the system's best games (though not everything they offer in this collection is gold; Laser Blast has to be the worst video game I've ever played, Kaboom is unplayable without a paddle controller, Activision Decathlon doesn't work very well without the Track & Field controller, and the unreleased games they included were unreleased for a reason). Still, with titles like Frostbite, Pitfall, River Raid, Stampede, Enduro, Beamrider and many more, this is a definite purchase.

I've been in the Asian part of Turkey, which would be another continent.
Not sure of the distance, but I had to travel pretty much straight across Europe to get there. Well, it's not like Europe is very huge, but...

Thanks, guys, and happy birthday, Wurl.

And, while it's true that I've been drinking legally for 2 years now, today marks the day when I can legally drink whatever I want to, not just beer and wine.

What I did today? Well, not very much, really, apart from attempting to play Mega Man X while drunk, which makes the game a tad more challening.

Didn't really get any presents, as the laptop I got for Christmas was a combined Christmas/birthday present, but the copy of Mega Man X Collection I had recently ordered arrived today, and provided lots of entertainment. Yay.

OoC: Yay, Sky!

Adamant: Right. According to Maijin, if Evil SomerZ went through all this trouble just to steal the Whetherdark...
Maijin: Weatherdark. He's in outer space. If he had a quick job to do out there, the Weatherdark is the easiest way to get there, and finish the job before anyone discovers him. Which means that it may already be too late.
Adamant: But how CAN we stop him if he's out there. Neither the Rocket nor the May Flareship were built for interstellar travel. The Whetherdark...
Maijin: Weatherdark.
Adamant: ...Weatherdark was all we had.
Maijin: You know, this is where having official connections comes in handy. I'll call the boss and tell him to contact NASA. We'll borrow a ship from there.
Adamant: Wait, doesn't space travel require weeks of preparation and an enormous budget?
Maijin: Does the Weatherdark require that? Can't it just go straight into space after the pilot flips a few switches?
Adamant: Well, yeah, but...
Maijin: And do you really believe the Weatherdark is so much more advanced than any other craft on Earth?
Adamant: But... whenever there's a report on TV or...
Maijin: TV? Do you really think the media is let in on every single government secret?
Adamant: No. But when it comes to space travel...
Maijin: The stuff you see on TV is horribly outdated. Today, we have access to far more superior crafts. The problem is, those crafts are top secret, and the public aren't supposed to know about them. That's why we launch primitive ships every once in a while, the public has to keep believing the lies we tell them. And when Russia launch their primitive ships, which are probably also to cover the fact that they have access to far more advanced technology, we have to as well. We can't let the american public believe Russia can send ships to Mars and we can't, even though I'm certain multiple Russian ships have left the solar system by now.
Adamant: So it's all a big conspiracy? Why can't the officials just give the people the truth, instead of wasting millions to keep all this hidden?
Maijin: You want the truth? You can't HANDLE to truth.
Adamant: Uh...
Maijin: So yeah, I'll go make a call.

Floatia
As the cyborg finished his sentence, he suddenly fell to the floor, seemingly in pain.
Adamant: Hm, I'd say Evil SomerZ is right in the middle of whatever he was planning right now, and we still have no idea of where to start looking for him. This doesn't look good.

Maijin, who had left the room to make his call, returned returned with his cell phone in his hand, having just hung up on his boss.

Maijin: One four-person rocket ship coming up. The boss said he's gonna contact NASA and have a pilot bring the ship straight to the palace. Free of charge.
Adamant: Hey, that's great. It seems like Evil SomerZ is putting his plan into action right as we speak, though. How fast ARE these ships?
Maijin: Not really sure. Last time I checked, the fastest one could reach Mars in 10 minutes, but that was a couple of years ago.

(Yeah, a tiny bit of godmodding there. It couldn't be avoided.)

After amusing himself for a few minutes watching the cyborg beat himself up, Adamant the doorbell ring, and went to let the visitor in. A tall, blond man wearing a white spacesuit was standing right outside, near a rather fancy looking spaceship maybe 5 meters long and 3 meters wide.

Man: Yo. My name's Clarence Nelson, and I was instructed to deliver a four-person rocket ship at this address.
Adamant: That was fast. I'll make sure to order from you guys in the future as well.
Clarence: Yeah, we don't really make home deliveries of top secret prototype rocket ships, this was more like an exception. But thanks anyway. Would you like a pilot?
Adamant: I don't know. I'll ask.

The mage turns and yells into the palace.

Adamant: Hey, Z, come take a look at this spaceship! You think you or one of your crew can pilot it?

Here it's mostly Sailor moon, due to it being very popular a few years ago before Pokémon. My sister is a big fan of it, but I really wonder if it was dubbed from the Japanse or American version. (Swedes are not as picky as Americans when it comes at censoring stuff, but we have our limits too ).

It was dubbed from the japanese original. If you found the swedish version bad, you don't want to touch the american one, believe me.

As for the pickyness you mentioned, I guess you mean Zoicite's sex change in the swedish dub. In that case, that was apparantly a mistake, because the translator was a moron who can't see the difference between men and women.

As for the american dub, however, THERE the sex change was due to american soccer moms being homophobic bastards.

I'll just bump this to tell you that I tried the DS Lite today. Contacts who can get you into locked press conferences is something we all should have.

Anyway, the DS Lite is pretty sweet. It's very compact, the two parts it's made of fit much better together, it fits great in your average pocket, the shoulder buttons are a lot more "clicky" than on the regular DS (this is a good thing), and the backlight... oh God, the backlight. It's totally awesome. We got to test a regular DS at the same time, and the difference is just... three times the brightness of the original, or so. Holding the two models up against each other, the regular DS barely looks like it's emitting any light at all. It's great.

...still won't buy one, though. It's too expensive to warrant a buy when it's this similiar to the original. I could understand people buying a GBA SP, as the original GBA had an annoyingly dark screen, but this upgrade seems a lot less nessecary.

It's still really frickin' sweet, though.
