Originally posted by Ailure Yeah, when people say the Mega Drive did well in Europe, they mean the UK, because it did horribly in Scandinavia. I can't remember ever seeing a console or a game for sale in a store, and no one I knew had owned anything Sega-related. Scandinavian video game magazine Power Player, upon going multiplatform at the advent of the Playstation, openly said that Sega's market share was much too low for a Sega magazine to be published - it was either that small spot in a mostly SNES/PSX-focused multiplatform magazine, or nothing at all. Saying the Mega Drive was the clear winner in Europe is just ignorant - if you mean UK, say UK. |

| Yeah, consoles were considered children's toys back in those days, so computers had a much larger user base, and there were a whole lot of different brands to choose between.
As for the Mega Drive's popularity, if I can live in Europe in the early 90s without even seeing a Mega Drive, let alone knowing anyone who has one, it's not popular. Popular in parts of Europe, yes, but not in "Europe". That's like saying the Master System did really well in America due to it's success in Brazil. |

We get bigger e-penises by proving to non-staff that there are, without doubt, forums we can access, but they can't. |

Oh my god, massive bumpage. Almost as large as Xkeepers.

World A-D are indeed accessed by beating the game 8 times (and as it's a disk game, it's nice enough to save the number of times it's been beaten... it's the only thing it saves, actually, hiscores are reset for some reason), but world 9 has always been the special exception. Even in All-Stars, where world A was accessed by simply beating world 8 or 9, world 9 required a special trick to access. Even in the original Famicom version, a lot of kids probably discovered world A-D before world 9 - beating all 8 worlds in one go is tough, and warp zones were probably often used - since most of those who were good enough at the game to get anywhere near world 8 knew of the warp zones in the original, they probably located most warp zones easily enough. World 9 was the special reward waiting for those who didn't use them.

Originally posted by Racer Xeo 1, actually. A fully charged Atomic Fire completely destroys Wood Man. And of course, a single Metal Blade takes care of Metal Man. I'll have to go with MM3 here... they're both extremely good games, but 3 is more than 50% longer, and as we all know, more is better. Plus, 3 has Proto Man and his song, the single best piece of music in the series. Love the remix on Anniversary Collection. As for worst game, 8 (the main series really hit a slump after 4, though. Guess Capcom were focusing more on the X series at the time). Or the Game Gear game, but that was just a shoddy port of various parts of earlier games, and the screen size is what ruined it, so it doesn't really count. Neither do the PC games, I guess, since they weren't made by Capcom.

So yeah, here's what I've been playing for the last month or so. Not a new game by any means, but it recently got a fan translation, making it understandable for the non-japanese among us.
|
Being of the visual novel genre, it certainly isn't for everyone, with a "gameplay" revolving around reading a story, and making a couple decisions along the way to watch the game unfold in various direction before eventually culminating in one of the many different endings (or, if you make the wrong desicion at the wrong time, watching the hero die a brutal death, hoping your last save wasn't from that long ago). According to the readme for the translation, the game "dwarfs The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings trilogy combined", which I'm not too sure of, but it IS a massive game. Explaining the plot without spoiling anything isn't easy, as many important plot elements don't come into play until quite a bit into the game, but basically, the game revolves around 17-year-old Shiki from the powerful Tohno family, who, after an accident as a kid, has been blessed with the ability to see "the death of all thing" in form of lines and dots. By tracing these lines, he can cut absolutely anything, and by piercing a dot, he will completely destroy the object the dot appeared on. Luckily for him, he has also aquired a pair of magic glasses blocking out this death from his sight, keeping him sane. Having been subsequently disavowed by his family after the accident and sent to live with relatives, he is called back to the Tohno household after his father's death by his sister Akiha, the new head of the family. His life changes completely from this point - not only does his now live in a large mansion with his sister and two female servants around his own age, there's also this mysterious girl at school who seems awfully familiar with him, even though he's not sure if he's even seen her before, as well as him suddenly becoming the center of attention of the most popular girl in class. And while that might not seem too far out, after collapsing from anemia at school one day, and spotting a beautiful girl on his way home, he, for no apparant reason, stalks her all the way to her apartment and kills her with the help of his mystic eyes. After passing out and waking up at home, he disregards that event as a dream - only to find the very girl he killed waiting for him outside school. The story picks up from there, delving into vampirism and mysterious latent powers inthe blood of certain families, while remaining a beautiful love story at heart. It's dark and tragic, and there's no really happy ending to it all (each of the five girls, with one exeption, has two endings - a "true ending" and a "good ending", and things usually end in tears in the true ones), but the story IS really good, and coupled with the first-person point of view, makes you really feel bad for a lot of these characters. Give it a try. However, if you're of the anime-hating crowd, don't bother. You won't like it.
Oh, and yes, there are hentai scenes in the game. Not a lot, but they're there. The installation file for the translation lets you install a non-hentai version, though.

Yeah, I agree, Adventure 2 was a great improvement over Adventure. Tails and Eggman's levels were like Gamma's levels with less clunky platforming and no stupid combo-for-time system, Knuckles and Rouge's levels were Knuckles' levels with better stage design, and Sonic and Shadow's levels were.. well, much like Sonic's levels, but they were good already. Then they did away with Tails' levels (wow, we can play Sonic's levels over again, but this time we can fly over everything - oh, and there's now a time limit. Fun. No, wait), Amy's levels (slow and dull) and Big's level (fucking retarded), as well as that stupid overworld that never told you where to go.
|
While it's true that Soic is supposed to be about speed, having "zoom around the level looking for stuff with a radar" and "stomp around blowing shit up" doesn't clash with that idea THAT much - at least they allow for rather fast forward movement, unlike "slow ass platforming" and "sitting on your ass fishing".

The screenshot doesn't really look like something from a NES or SNES game, does it?

So I'm guessing these games will have battles that can be won by holding down A, just like the GBA hackjobs? Meh. Removing the gameplay from games that didn't have anything else going for them is not a good idea, guys, no matter how many flashy FMVs you add.
|
Still, it's called Final Fantasy, so it'll sell no matter how much it sucks. When was the last time that name was used on a game that was actually good? Final Fantasy Tactics? (restricted) |

It's a new version of the console, so you're not paying 250+$ for a DVD player, you're paying 250+$ for a Wii AND a DVD player.
|
Still, it seems fairly pointless - if you don't own a DVD player in this day and age, you're not interested enough in getting one to pay extra for a more expensive model of a console for one. DVD players in consoles was a good idea back when the PS2 did it, but with the price they go for these days, no one will really care whether their new console has one or not.

Originally posted by Grey Mine's I. What do I win? The party system adds an extreme amount of replay value, the monsters all happen to be individual creatures who must be treated differently rather than the different-looking sword fodder found in too many RPGs, and the battles actually reward strategy and knowledge unlike the hold-a-button-a-thons we get nowadays. Sure, it's buggy and inbalanced as all hell, but knowledge of this only adds some more stuff to to the gameplay that must be considered if you're attempting to screw around with the game a bit. Hard to explain, really, but the game just feels so complete, and the focus on pure gameplay is a delight. And as I sais, the class system adds so much. But eh, Dragon Quest is a far better series anyway. (restricted) |
