Oh my. After the complete destruction of FF1 and FF2 and the major glitchfest that was FF4, Squeenix finally produces a good FF remake on a handheld Nintendo console. And what a game it is.

As we turn on the game, we are instantly greeted with a full motion video featuring the best graphics yet seen on the DS. I don't think even the N64 could handle something like this. Now, I'm not exactly a graphics whore, but this intro was pretty amazing.

Moving onto the game itself, we get the classic some of us already know and love. The graphics are in 3D, though the camera is fixed, so while you can zoom in and out, you won't be able to twist it all over the place to uncover secret passages.
The beginning of the game has been completely revamped - instead of four unnamed boys walking into a cave and falling through a hole, the entire first dungeon has you playing as a single hero, the chibi-Sephiroth lookalike Luneth (who, unlike Sephy, is rather happy-go-lucky and optimistic). He meets up with the shy and careful Arcew in the second town, Kazus, the token feisty female Refia inside Cid's airship, and the laughably emo Inguz in Sasoon Castle. And up to this point, you still haven't recieved your job classes - you won't get these until after the defeat of Jinn, when the Wind Crystal warps the group, minus princess Sara, back to the first dungeon., after which they must return to Sasoon and watch Jinn get sealed away, before recieving the canoe so they can return to their airship. Certainly makes more sense than Sara warping you to Sasoon, like in the original.
Of course, there are some changes to this remake, apart from this new sequence of events at the beginning. Luckily, the turn-based battle system was not touched, although now bosses may attack multiple times during a turn (and they seem to have more HP as well - I've died a couple of times against Medusa, who was incredibly easy to beat in the original). Seems like the number of monsters you can fight at the same time has been reduced, though - I still haven't fought more than three, while in the original, you could meet up to 5 goblins at once in the first dungeon. Sure, you had more characters in your party then, but...
Jobs have been changed around a bit - The Wind Crystal now gives you the Thief job in addition to the 5 it originally gave, the characters all start as an all-new class which can use a lot of different weapons and some low-level magic (I believe the Onion Kid job is a hidden bonus job, like the Mimic in FF5), some new jobs have been added, and some old ones have changed. I haven't recieved them yet, but apparently the "update jobs" like Knight and Karateka no longer render the earlier jobs obsolete.
The NPCs who travel alongside you now fight with you as well - at least to a certain extent. About 20% of the time, after you've given your party members their commands, your NPC buddy might jump into the battle and deliver an attack. Desshiyu's Thundra spell has come in mighty handy at times.
There are also a couple new and nice features, like the ability to run from the Nepto dragon, and the ability to reenter the Nepto dungeon after beating it.

So should you get it? Yes, yes you should.

Posted on 09-25-06 12:17 PM, in Mario Party - what would be good for the next MP game? Link
More minigames where huge stacks of money is at stake. Remember Grab Bag and Bash'n Cash from the original, where people could steal money from each other? Where did they go?

And of course, less luck-based crap. Less complicated boards would be nice as well - many of these new games have large boards with an extreme amount of ways to go, and a lot of events no one wants to play since they're so expensive. 30 coins to bring all the other characters to that space? Yeah, that's always worth it. Less cheap items would be nice too - or at least give us the option of turning off that stupid magic lamp. Mario Party 1 had buyable feature dice you could enable or disable - what happened to those?

It forces the played to take chances.

Uh, FFV and VI use the ATB system, not the turn based system. And since the original FF3 used a turn based system, so does the DS remake. You still get menus with choices like Attack and Magic, it's just that, like in every other game with a turn based system, you give your orders to the entire party while the monsters input their orders, then all the characters and monsters execute their attacks in an order based on both the Agility stat and some randomness. THAT is what a turn-based battle system is. You gaming magazine seems to be written by some guy who haven't played any RPG released prior to FF7.

And yeah, I imported the japanese version, since I didn't want to wait for an english translation. As long as you've played the original FF3 and know where to go, it's fairly easy to play even if you don't know the language.

The turn-based attack system wasn't touched. Every single version of FF1, FF2 and FF3 ever released, including this one, uses the turn-based battle system. FF4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 (?), and I think 10 uses the ATB system. As I said, the guy who wrote that stuff in your magazine seems to hate the turn-based battle system, most likely since the first RPG he played was FF7, while at the same time confusing some terms, calling the ATB system "turn based".

And no, they won't change the battle system for the international release.

I know of Super Play, but haven't really read it that much. It go a coupel of issues published in Norway a year ago or so, but was cancelled due to poor sales. Didn't hear too much positive about it either (though it's probably better than Game Reactor... it's hard to be worse).

Just compared a monster guide for the original game with part of the beastiary in the DS remake, and it does indeed seem like things are tougher overall here. While the random encounter monsters have recieved small boosts in power, the bosses is where the major changes are - as an example, the Giant Rat now has 900 HP instead of 450, Gushko has 3500 instead of 1400 and Medusa now has 3000 instead of 980.

Yes, this game is actually HARDER than the original. Wow.

Later on, maybe, but I did get my ass kicked by Medusa a number of times before I bought a stack of potions and used those for healing on my way to the boss to conserve MP for curing in the actual battle (and I still almost ran out), and while I did defeat Gushko on my first try, both my mages were dead when that happened, and my Warrior and Monk would've survived two more rounds of battle. And in the Giant Rat battle, I ran out of MP and battle items a long time before he was dead (double HP means a LOT in that battle, since you can't deal damage by hitting him), and only won because Desshiyu and his infinite MP pool got a lot of hits in. Remember, the bosses not ony have far more HP than before, they attack multiple times during a battle now as well.

Yes, the bosses are indeed harder.

I can't remember that being the case in the original either, but it's certainly not here. The job menu even lists the level you've reached with a job next to it. Also, capacity points have been done away with. Not really that big a deal, since they barely made a difference in the original, but still, they're gone.

As for the battle speed, it's okay. Certainly not slow, though it doesn't seem like it changed that much from the original. Remember, the original games were only slow-paced if you didn't turn up the battle speed.

As a result of job tweaking, the Scholar is now a certified boss killer. Originally, he could smack monsters with his books (which there were like 5 of in the game, and they came in sets of 3 and 2, leaving him incredibly underpowered every time you didn't just find new weapons for him), scan an enemy's HP and MP, and determine an enemy's weak point. The remake combines his two crappy abilities (the ability to see a weak point was useful against Hyne, and the other one was pure trash) into a single command (which is still fairly crappy and only useful againt Hyne), gives him the ability to cast some low-level White magic (10 extra charges of Cure is somewhat useful), andmost importantly, doubles the effect of any items he uses. And that includes doubling the power of those spellcasting items, allowing you to do an extreme amount of damage to enemies weak against a specific element by using that element's spell item against it. The Zeus Rage item allowed him to deal 2000 HP worth of damage each round towards Kraken, who went down in 3 turns. I love this game.

Lati@s, I guess, since Jirachi dosn't require a ticket, and the others aren't available in Ruby. Still, Lati@s is catchable in Sapphire, so it's not THAT much of an OMG pokemon.

Yeah, they're slow over here. But Lugia and Ho-oh are catchable in Colosseum and XD, so screw them, I want my Mew and Celebi.

Then again, I really should get around to beating these games.. I have the Eon and Aurora tickets, but haven't used them yet, since I'm not far enough into the games. Got Jirachi, though.
