I found this great .pdf file on how to convert my SNES controller to USB. I also found out that I need a special chip. Can anyone help me out on what chip to buy for my SNES controller, and is it worth it, or should I buy an adapter instead? Anyways, here's the PDF link.

Seeing as you can't even read what's on the chip, I have no idea what it is. If it's something made specifically for this, it'll probably be cheaper and less of a hassle to just buy an adapter somewhere, unless you're wanting to do a little electronics project.
The trick is figuring out what they're using, though. |

It's probably easier to make a SNES to parallel port adaptor.

Actually, yes it is. I knew a guy who made one, and it worked fine. You could probably get the 1N914 diodes from Radio Shack, maybe (I have like 200 of them at work) for really cheap.

This sounds kind of familiar. Try this link. I went here to buy my controllers for USB (they were the no brand name controllers, but according to the site, they don't use those anymore *mine were two years ago*), but they also sell the stuff to convert your own. I'm a bit strapped for cash here, with no job (can't get a job until a year from now..., since I'm still a sophomore in high school), and I can't use my parents' money. My intent for converting SNES controllers was so that I can play my emulator at school with a friend (too many keys on keyboard are pushed...), and I don't have enough priviledges to do anything on the computer (basically, shut down, no control panel, no internet, can use any usb devices still, but parallel ports are down...), except open files on the computer, and use usb devices, and print. I have quite a few SNES controllers that I was willing to convert, but I still don't know what that chip is. Again, I can't buy anything from the internet (except a few rare cases), as I'm not allowed to. If I could figure out what the chip is, I could go to RadioShack and buy myself the chip, if available. Heck, if I don't need a chip, even better!

I think you're almost definitely going to need a chip of some sort for USB. If you have the money I suggest just buying a nice game pad. The Saitek P880 is awesome for SNES. FYI, Radio Shack's markup is ridiculous.
