Taryn: Oh, you could still wait a bit if you needed to. It's just that the younger you are when you get them taken out, the easier the recovery is. At 25... pretty easy recovery. At 35 or 45... not so much. Plus you're rolling the dice with health risks too.

Certainly better than the tooth removal of sorts that happened to a member of the Stanford Band today in the picnic day where we and several other bands were playing. I'm not entirely sure what happened, as I witnessed mostly the aftermath, but from what I gather, one of the sax players (tenor or alto I'm not sure), while playing, got hit by a beach ball...or something similar, but a bit heavier...rather hard, and chipped his two front teeth.
I'm not sure if I'll have to get my wisdom teeth removed or not. The dentist I go to every once in a while didn't say anything about it, so it's probably not urgent. |

Hope you feel better Ry!!
I had one pulled out so far. I should just go in and have the other three taken out (which are still in the gum, and one is poking out a bit) but I just keep forgetting about it. Bah, I should just take a few sick days and get it over with. |

I had mine out no problems. I got the general Vicodin as well, and it didn't do much of anything for me. I think I just stopped taking it. I also ate a sandwich before I should have, just because I was pissed at not being able to.

During July, I went into surgery to fix a slight underbite that I had (front teeth were allinged directly with eachother). They were moving my upper jaw forward, but said that I had to have all four of my wisdom teeth removed to do so. So I went under, and woke up 6 hours later. And I could not feel a thing.
So I went home the next day, and was finally off anastesia, or however you spell it. By the time I got home, I figured that I would be hurting, or at least my cheeks indicated as much. And I could not feel a thing. So I figured that it was the Tylenol Codine that was taking the pain away (nasty stuff, by the way). I soon finished with that stuff, and waited. And I could not feel a thing. And then I sneezed blood and it hurt like hell. =/ So I figure that the deviated septum that they fixed during the surgery somehow prevented the pain until I sneezed. A, such a lovely story. |

I've heard that the dutch word for wisdom teeth, "verstandskies" has a completely different meaning. It'd be the furthest back in your mouth: "verste stand". I'm not too sure about the english word though... To the WikiMobile!
"They are called "wisdom teeth" because they appear so late—much later than the other teeth, at an age where people are supposedly wiser than as a child, when the other teeth erupt." Y'know, that fits in nicely with the dutch word... (edited by Kyoufu Kawa on 04-23-06 02:45 PM) |

I hope you have a quick recovery. Most of my pain went away after a few days. But i didn't get full usage of my jaw until three weeks later. I only had two widsom teeth overall (two upper ones). The lower ones never formed.

Anya: If you have the insurance or means to now, then get them done! Better now than later when you forget about them or they cause problems. :\

Thanks for the well wishes...I really appreciate it. The inside of my mouth feels pretty normal, but my jaw is still swollen and stiff and rather sore. I keep microwaving a wet washcloth and putting it on my cheek, but it doesn't seem to help much. I can chew - sort of - but I can't open my mouth that widely, so it's best to stick to rather soft foods that I can easily spoon into my mouth. Somehow I get the idea that I shouldn't resume my normal strenuous workout routine until I can eat normally again. Argh. I know I'm not going to turn Stay-Puft in a week, but it's still annoying.
In response to Colin's comment about being put under - I had the procedure done by an oral surgeon, and I probably got general instead of local because I had that one weird tooth that was lodged sideways underneath the gum. If it had come in like the others, it would have been easier to extract, so I could have probably just had a buttload of Novocaine. My insurance should cover most of the cost of the operation. |

Uhm, so when did you start feeling new teeth grow in (if that's ever happened to you). I think I have some new teeth growing under my wisdoms and hopefully, I won't have to take them out until I'm in my mid twenties.
I really hope it goes away soon. It hurts my teeth thinking about it. I know alot of people who had their's yanked out and all of them complained of the pain. I'm very anxious about it all, never had them taken out yet. (edited by [GGS] Cruel Justice on 04-24-06 01:39 AM) |

Originally posted by [GGS I haven't had mine taken out yet, but I'll admit I'm slightly anxious about it too. Although I guess having gone through surgery last year to have an ovary removed has relieved a significant poriton of that anxiety. That thing hurt a shitload, but I guess it makes me feel better somehow about future pain.... My teeth have given me various discomforting feelings over the last few years, but not sure if this means anything or not. I think this means they're "coming up" I am not yet in any pain thanks to Wisdom Teeth, but I suspect I should see a dentist |

You'd probably feel the pain on the side, Taryn... I didn't feel mine but then again they weren't quite out. But when the dentist tells you that they should come out...

Hooray. Everything is mostly back to normal. The Chip 'n Dale face is almost gone - you can't tell my cheek is swollen unless you look at it closely. There is a bruise on my jaw, but it's not that bad. I still can't open my mouth the entire way, but eh, that takes time, and at least I can open it enough for most foods that I like. I don't think I'm allowed to eat nuts for a couple of weeks, though.

I got all four of mine out the day of Junior Prom. Mine were so bad that my cheeks puffed up for a good week. Unfortunately, my parents were paranoid enough to put me back in school after only three days of missing.
Some fun that was. I've had six total teeth out, but you couldn't guess unless you counted them all. Four on top, two on bottom. Add to braces for ten years and you have a winner. |
