For myself, no. But in some occasions involving Rom hacking, I might use some.
You? |

When ROM hacking, yes, a lot.
When playing, depends. Not to cheat, but like when I play a SMW hack, I use save states on the map. (edited by Stifu on 04-18-06 11:49 AM) |

I think I'll let this picture speak for itself. That's just the ZSNES savestates though. Well, not quite, there's also the actual save files for several games in there, but otherwise, the rest have .zst, .zs1, .zs2, and so on extensions. It's never really occurred to me that using savestates could be seen as cheating, as since I first discovered emulators and ROMs, I thought of them as something you were expected to use ![]() In short though, yes, pretty much all of the time ![]() |

Yes, I use savestates. It just depends on what game I'm playing. The time I used the most savestates was when I tried to beat Contra 3 back in 2003. I used the savestate almost every second around the end of the game. I eventually beat the entire game. I can barely make it to the third level without savestates. Generally, I'll use them at times that I can't save normally, or as a faster alternative to normal saves.
This, however, has bitten me in the ass in Fire Emblem: The Sealed Sword... I lost my normal save because of accidentally loading an old savestate. =/ |

Definitely I'll use them while playing games in the event that practicing at something is going to cost me lots of time. Example: Metroid Zero Mission, in Chozodia, where you have to do a series of speed boosts and save your charge to obtain an energy tank. If you screw it up you have to trudge your way back to the starting point. I'd just use a savestate to start me back at the beginning if I screwed up.
I think that using savestates help you gain temporary skill at a faster rate, but I've noticed that it affects long term skill level adversely. As far as using savestates while hacking, obviously yes. All the time. Though they can kind of be a source of problems if you keep forgetting you modified this memory location or that memory location after you load the state. |

Originally posted by Cheveyo Chowilawu The same happened for me. Actually, it made me use savestates more often so I wouldn't make the mistake again. I think it happened for several games before I realized what was happening. Let's see: Earthbound, Final Fantasy VI, and Rockman & Forte. When it happens in RPGs, it felt like so many hours were wasted (or a quarter of the time if the speed up key is used ![]() As MathOnNapkins said, it temporarily increases skill, but the long term really goes down. I began to play overconfidently on Super Metroid on the hardware after playing emulators so long. Well, Super Metroid used to be a difficult game for me before, so I always played it not as intense *the fast time videos made me attempt stuff as well*. Anyway, for games I used to consider simple (Mario World, All Stars) are now difficult playing on the hardware. I'm so used to the rewind button or the save states, it's not really the same anymore. What it did for me is, almost quick playing the games and hack them instead. |

I pretty much just use them when I can't save normally, when I'm hacking, or just after doing something REALLY HARD that I don't want to have to redo. (Nothing says fun like getting to the end of a chain of 20 Koopa Paratroopas over a bottomless pit while dodging spinies and fireballs, only to screw up and fall in a hole afterward. ![]() ![]() ![]() Also, yes, it sucks when you accidentally load an old state and it overwrites your save file. ![]() (edited by HyperMackerel on 04-20-06 09:41 PM) |

I use it normally when I get to a good part on a game... or just so that I don't have to do any restarting on anything again. Most commonly on the "good part of the game (or level)", however.

I "savestate" quite often in some SMW Hacks. It depends on the hack's difficulty level, the distance to the next are you can save and my time. Also I always use a save state AFTER I saved legitimatelly. I can load it a lot faster. And the number of lives and the Big/Fire/Cape Mario status doesn't bother me as well, as I anyway get powerups in earlier levels before entering a harder level or one with a low number of them ...
But I don't want to spoil the fun, if this is something the save state destroys. If it concerns secrets, I use them far less than in essential situations. Example: An uber-hard level in SMW. I put saves, say, every room. But this hidden POW-door leads to another path which is also hard. No savestates when going for the key/secret exit. This also is important for other games as well. Savestating in role playing games during a challenging battle ? Never. |

I use save states all of the time. You wouldn't like my Savestates folder right now. I have enough save states from when I was hacking Tetris Attack (advanced block editor) (had to copy rom 3 times to support all of my saves) that I just decided, "Screw it..." and let it grow. I now only use about 2 slots. A main, and a secondary (i.e. take a diff long path that led somewhere useless...). I still have all of those savestates from when I left "Increment save state" in ZSNES. Now, just rewind states and 2 save states. Hmm...while I'm at it, I should see what roms have save states, which I don't play, take those ones out, and...what am I talking about? I'm never going to clean my save states folder. Unless HDD failure. Or something. Yeah. Uh-huh.

I only use save states when testing rom hacks (mine or others) or writing walkthroughs. When I'm playing for fun, I don't use savestates, unless I'm playing a rom which doesn't save correctly due to an emulation error. Using save states for cheating is wimpy; you haven't beat a game until you've played it all the way through in the way originally intended (ie. the way it plays on an unmodified console)

I use them semi-often, but not alot. In games like Super Mario RPG and Donkey Kong Land, I use them quite frequently, but in other games like Tetris and Mario Party, I don't use them, for the sake of it being cheap.
While ROM hacking, on the other hand, I use them every second practically, but I haven't been ROM hacking recently, I believe I might have a new hobby. |

I just use savesates to save progress. Or a really long and difficult-to-perform series of actions that also involves lots of trudging back to a starting point, or puzzles.

I only use them when I know I'm about to screw up. Like, if I see a big obstacle coming up in a SMB hack (or any type of Mario hack for that manner) I'll just press the quick save key right before it. Sometimes I don't see it coming though, so that doesn't always work out so well ![]() |
