Heya. I'm trying to make some ExGFX for my levels, but am experiencing a bit of a difficulty. When saving these files,(made from scratch) they end up as 8 KB files as opposed to 4 KB files, despite being smaller in terms of quantity than most files I've downloaded.
Also, I guess I can post it so you can see what I'm working on. Artistic input would also be appreciated. (Edit: Deleted this image. I've moved on, as it were ) As you might have guessed, it's a goomba-themed greco-roman style set for my first area. Now, for the actual file, I've separated it so that it utilizes space more effectively. The only thing that isn't hand (mouse?) drawn here is the smaller goomba statue, which is probably going to be used as a top of the post (if you ever look at greek architecture, you'll get what I mean.) The larger statue is supposed to be somewhat like statues of Caesar and such, hence the pose. He was originally going to have a Roman Centurion helmet (the plumed ones) but I can't draw, plus it was way too big for my liking. Anyhoo, opinions, comments, ideas as to how to make the file of a proper size? (edited by Mr. Saturn on 04-08-06 03:30 PM) (edited by Mr. Saturn on 04-11-06 06:49 PM) |

extract the graphics from your rom (red mushroom) then copy one of the files and edit your graphics into it. if you're using YY-CHR you can just copy and paste your graphics and save the copy with the name of the ExGFX file you want it to be. This way it should stay at 4KB

That worked perfectly. Thanks!

Since your question has already been answered, I may as well comment on your GFX
They actually look really good. The fact that you drew them by hand is a plus too, since they are now your own, unique GFX. The Goomba standing on the pedestal-like thing is my favourite part The fact that they are all monochrome looks interesting too. Nice work |

i agree that your graphics look really good.
i cant help but think that adding some color would make them look even better - maybe shades of bronze on the goombas themselves or some different coloring for the plaque. i could definitely be wrong though. |

Uhm, I guess they're okay. I mean, uh, the small bits are okay. You can't gp wrong with those! But I'd add like another shade to this stuff so it has more depth (unless this is like the entire game's style, in which case I'm not one to say anything and in fact your graphics are pretty awesome if you're going for a monochrome gameboy style and stuff), and maybe go over the larger goomba so it looks a little more like the small one. You know, the cheeks and stuff.
I'm no sprite artist, but I did a little here and there to fix it up for you. The left cheek is considerably screwed up and I have no idea what I'm supposed to do there. I didn't really fix the feet or the podium thing. Heheheheh... Oh, and I changed the format to .PNG because it is omega-superior for displaying and using sprites. Then I gave it a red transparent background because the gray one was quadruple-confusing. I hope this helps! Your sprites aren't great, (maybe they are to people that suck at spriting) but with a little time and effort they could be double-awesome. Your originality is good, too. Keep at it! And EarthBound is awesome. Just wanted to get that out of the way. [EDIT: Added GENERIC SHADING on the plaque and stuff. I would with the pillars, if it was my work, but hey.] (edited by Radiation on 04-09-06 07:21 AM) (edited by Radiation on 04-09-06 07:23 AM) (edited by Radiation on 04-09-06 07:24 AM) |

I would say that the giant goomba statue looks funny... and the overall style of the graphics is a bit too um... cartoony (i.e. outlined) for me. But it's definitely a start. Your pillars look very plain, and ancient Greek pillars looked quite a bit more detailed than that from what I've seen. Things like swirls near the base and the top. Things like the shape of them being tapered a bit. I don't know the architecht terms for those, so I hope you know what I mean.

Dude, did you draw that goomba with your eyes closed? It's horrible.

Maybe the giant goomba suffered a mutatation and is the reason that it's ugly

Hereby I'd like to thank you for your constructive criticisim I agree with Radiation that some shading would be nice, unless you're not going for that. Other than that, the shape of the big goomba statue doesn't look right. I think you should take the small Goomba as a bit of reference. The smaller parts look good, but could also use a little more depth.

yeah, I knew that the big goomba was pretty dopey looking, but all the "newer" reference pics I looked for have a trapezoidal shape (specificially, this one ) so I was more or less on my own as to how fat, thin, or in my case nonexistent, the cheeks were. These were very preliminary pieces, and more for the basic idea of the look than a "I want to use this and only this" option.
I very much appreciate the (mostly) constructive criticism, and I'm probably going to use most of these ideas. I'm definitely going to fix the larger goomba (although I doubt the cheeks will be that thin) and may or may not replace the black with a darker grey(depends on what SMW palettes let me get away with). Of course, this is YY-CHR, so I'll have access to more feasible colors via LM. |

OK heres what I did considerring the fact that I have an artistic side to me. I changed ur marble a bit, but I didn't bother touching the goombas.
Comments? (edited by THE ONE on 04-09-06 04:50 PM) |

I very much like the texturization and the changes look good, except for the broken pillars. They don't line up, and I'd like it to look like if you took the fallen broken pillar and the upright broken pillar and put them together, it'd be a whole pillar again. I do appreciate the artistic eye, though ^^;
Edit: using the input, I've changed the pieces, and have compiled a screenshot I know there needs to be grass, which is what I'm working on next. However, Right now I'm just talking about the pillars. I might also add some more greek-style architecture, but I'm not sure. Well, I've been adding to it, and have made the lintels (top supports) and roof. However, I've come across another problem. I want to be able to have Mario slide down the roof, and that works fine, However, two tiles seem to be particularly finnicky, resulting in
this. I'm using 16E for the left facing slope and 191 for the right facing slope, as they seem to be the only ones that fit the design. But mario walking up them results in him passing through until he hits a solid piece. Are there alternatives to this tile, or am I pretty much SOL on this? It's okay, but I'd make more shading designs to give it a somewhat more realistic look, like on SMAS, but that's just me...

Originally posted by Skyon Do you mean anywhere in specific? Because if you mean the roof, that's still a work in progress, I'm just trying to get the "acts like" down first. And the pillars aren't exactly easy to shade, given the palette I'm using. |

Originally posted by FPIOriginally posted by Mr. Saturn well, 1D8 seems to work, but 10C doesn't. Thank you very much, though. (edit: I looked at the tileset map, and figured you meant 1DC, which works like a charm, thanks!) (edited by Mr. Saturn on 04-12-06 02:45 AM) |
